This is the most in-depth, well-explained and thorough video I've seen on audio latency. He explains it so well, that it helped me fix my latency problems on my electronic drumset w/o him having to even use one. This man is legitimately TEACHING the material from rudimentary basics to the types of hardware required.

most important on Windows system is the OS optimisation :
    General optimisation Windows 10 PC
    1. Set your computer's power for high performance
If your computer is set to conserve energy, the CPU may not be running at full speed all of the time. This can have a detrimental effect on your computer's audio performance. To set your computer's power for high performance:
    - Go to: Control Panel>Power Options
    - Choose "High Performance"
    - Then click the "Change plan settings" button. Make sure both power options are set to "Never".
    2. Disable system sounds
System sounds can interrupt audio applications. Ensure that they are disabled by doing the following:
    - Go to control panel and select "Sound"
    - Go to the sounds tab
    - Under sounds scheme, select "No sounds"
    - Click "Apply" then, "OK"
    3. Set processor scheduling to "Background services"
This will improve the performance of your audio drivers on your computer. To do this:
    - In control panel select "system"
    - Go to "Advanced system settings" and then the "Advanced" tab
    - Click on "Settings.." under Performance to bring up the "Performance Options" window.
    - Go to the "Advanced" tab and set processor scheduling as "Background Services"
    - Click "Apply" then "OK"
    4. Disable 'Windows Background Apps'
Windows 10, by default, runs a number of Apps in the background, regardless of whether you are using them.
Select 'Settings' from the Windows Start menu, select 'Privacy', then select 'Background Apps'. From here switch 'Off' the apps that you do not believe you are using, or that you do not wish to run in the background when you are not using the program.
    5. Disable 'Windows updates from more than one place'
Navigate to 'Settings' in the Windows Start Menu.
    Then select:
Update & Security -> Advanced Options -> Choose how updates are delivered -> Turn the slider from 'ON' to 'OFF'.
    USB optimisation:
If you're using a USB interface then we'd also recommend checking the following settings:
    1) In the device manager (Right-click the Windows icon > Device Manager), in the Universal Serial Bus controllers section, right click each USB Root Hub, choose Properties > Power Management and untick the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option.
    2) Next, right-click the Windows Icon > Power Options. Set both "Screen" and "Sleep" options here to 'Never'.
Set the Power Scheme to High Performance (if this setting is not available, click on "Additional Power Settings" on the right side of the screen).
Then click on Change plan settings. On the next page set both "Turn off the display" and "Put the computer to sleep" to "Never".
    3) Then click Change advanced power settings. In the window that opens make sure you have the following settings: Hard disc > Turn off hard disk after > Setting (Minutes) = Never
Sleep > Sleep after > Setting (Minutes) = Never
USB settings > USB selective suspend setting > Setting = Disabled
Display > Turn off display after > Setting (Minutes) = Never
Processor power management > Minimum processor state > Setting = 100%
Processor power management > Maximum processor state > Setting = 100%
Please note, not all options are available on all machines.
    Advanced optimisation:
If you wish to optimise your system further, or you are using a system that is particularly lacking in resources you can follow the tips below for advanced optimisation.
    Disable Sleep/Hibernate mode
Sleep and Hibernate mode can cause problems on some systems. There are various sleep/hibernate states that different computers use and some system/device drivers may not work well when the computer comes out of these modes. If at all possible, it's worth disabling these modes to see if that improves your system's performance
Sleep mode can be disabled by following steps 2 and 3 in the 'USB Optimisation' section above. This will prevent your computer automatically going to sleep (you should then avoid deliberately selecting 'Sleep' or 'Hibernate' from the Power Options menu).
Disable Windows Firewall, anti-virus and spyware software
If you're able to run your system without connecting to the internet then these should all be disabled to ensure that no interferences occur during audio recording or playback and to ensure that maximum resources are available. To remain secure while your firewall and antivirus disabled, it is advisable to disconnect from any internet connections when working with audio. This will also make sure that no network adapters are conflicting with any audio drivers.
    Disable Visual effects
The visual features in Windows 10 can use resources that could otherwise help to improve audio performance. As a start, it is good idea to disable some of the visual features by doing the following:
    - Bring back up the "Performance Options" window by following step 3 above and clicking on the "Visual Effects" tab and selecting "custom".
    - Untick: "Animate windows when minimising and maximising" to help prevent glitches when minimising and maximising. You can also experiment with disabling other visual effects in the custom list to see how they improve audio performance.
    - Once finished, press "OK"
If you wish to optimise your Windows 10 graphics for the best performance use the "Adjust for best performance" option.
    Disable Network cards
Sometimes, network card drivers can cause problems with audio. A good troubleshooting step is to try disabling your network adapters in Device Manager, and then test local audio (like an .mp3) and see if you continue to have issues. This is also a good optimisation step in general. Disabled adapters can easily be re-enabled at any point.
    Disable Windows services
One way in which you can make more resources available to improve audio performance, is to disable unnecessary Windows 10 services as these use valuable resources. The following site has a comprehensive guide to the services running on Windows 10 and helps locate the services that are safe to disable: Windows 10 Service Configurations by Black Viper
Please note that we would recommend that disabling Windows services should be done only by advanced users.
If you are still experiencing audio performance problems after optimising your computer for audio, please Contact Technical Support
    Disable Fast Boot
Some users may experience an issue where audio becomes slowed down after booting the computer. This is fixed by disabling fast boot.

Thanks for the extensive information!. I'm curious where you got the information from. I have to use my same laptop for general usage as well as music recording. Do you happen to have a "Short List" of what is absolutely necessary to optimize for music recording?
FYI - I just installed ASIO4ALL ver. 2.14 on my laptop Dell PC running Cakewalk by Bandlab and using the included VST Software Instrument "SI - String Section 1." I played the VST using my external MIDI keyboard controller, and was able to play it without any dropouts, clicks, or distortion using a 128 sample rate. That gave me a latency of 2.9msec. As far as my initial tests go, I'm astounded at how well ASIO4ALL worked!

    • @Johnscompany
      @Johnscompany 5 лет назад +14

The latency need transform the analog audio signal from binari ( current signal to 1 and 0). And that's take a lot of time, and when we used more plugin's its worse because need recalculated it time of process, so that the reason. When you used a digital instruments like a piano keyboard, these used a digital interface called midi so don't need transformed the signal to binary. and the signal have less latency from analog audio.

My best advice is do a test with your own equipment and compare the latency you experience with a brand new empty song to adding a track to large song with 20 or so tracks. For me there was a huge difference in latency on an empty set compared to a large song with many tracks. There were no settings I could change to fix it, turning off plugins didn't fix it. What I learned to do is if I'm having latency issues while recording a new track in a large song I bounce everything down to a single track, save it out to a new version and then record the additional parts on that file. Then take those new parts into the full version for mixing. A bit of a pain but the latency is sometimes too much to bear especially if trying to play 8th notes.

One thing that can help that was glossed over is to reduce or eliminate background processes that DO NOT need to be running while processing audio. This varies from computer to computer, based on your software installs and platform (also: I hate the assumption we all use Macs, but that's another topic). There are guides out there to help you do that, but it can REALLY impact your DAW stability and reduce unwanted glitches. A lean OS is always, always, always your friend in music production. Don't use your music computer for garbage, surfing, downloading or testing software.

To do this on a Windows computer:
    Use the list like this:
First part: A) you can do this immediately and it does not take much time (does not cost any money).
Second part: B) you can do this immediately at once as well (does not cost any money as well).
Third part: C) May either take a lot of time or cost money.
Hint: The app everything may help a lot. Have a look at their page.
(I won't past the link here because I don't know if DR. Mix does agree with this. :-)
    A) - Look into your task processor: Quit all applications you don't need at the moment, i.e:
    - Stop your AntiVirus in terms of Stop scans. Don't necessarily disable it.
    -> Update it as well
    Please also consider:
is sample rate set to 44,1 KHZ or ...? Bitrate? 16, 24 or ....?
    - Make sure the latency buffer (aka ASIO buffer would be the more real term) is set as low as possible.
Give it a try. This may differ for each one of you.
Don't use ASIO4ALL but ASIO. ASIO4ALL is just a WDM wrapper and not a real ASIO.
Use the ASIO driver that comes with your AUDIO DEVICE.
    B) - Update your windows drivers.
    - Update all your audio device drivers.
-> Check the manual for extra tipps.
    - Update all your plugins.
    -> Consider the manuals.
    - Make sure Drive C has enough space!!! Very crucial.
-> Use Everything, Beyondcompare or WinDirStat to check or other tools of your choice.
    - Check if you got any network, system drivers or misc internet connections that may slow down your system.
    - Check if there is a yellow exclamation mark in your windows device manager next to your audio device.
If so get rid of it by detecting the problem.
If your audio device comes with a test program use it to get it running.
If it comes with a setup assistant also use it to get it running properly.
If it comes with a video series (like e.g. Focusrite 18i20 follow the videos meticulously.)
And like he said in the video:
    Consider using direct monitoring.
But make sure to disable other not needed outputs then.
For example, disable the playback from windows in the recording devices options.
    C) - Have a look at the Windows event log.
    - Have a look into the .dmp files. (Crash files)
    - If you encountered bluescreens before, try to solve them (here I cannot give a general answer, because too many different
systems and issues exist). This dovetails to the .dmp files.
Now only here the things that may cost many. And no, I will not tell you to overclock your computer.
For sure you could. But you want it to run for a while still as well, right?
    - If you did not get much ram into your computer extend it.
    - If you don't possess an SSD get one. (This is not valid if you got other types of fast drives that also exist nowadays.)
32 GB for making music should be still good. More is always better.
    - If your computer is quite old and already had some problems, buy a new one.
P.S.: If this all didn't help at least until the end of section B) consider also the support of your audio device manufacturer.
    HTH at least a litte.

Can you make a video on how to combat ground loop noise and static noise? I can hear noise from my speaker when I move the mouse.

iono if you've already fixed this but for anybody getting into this problem, make sure the cables you buy are Speaker Cables for the I/O and not Instrument Cables. On top of that, make sure they're shielded.

    • @olafkliemt1145
      @olafkliemt1145 3 года назад +2

@@hipstarchild you should do all conversions in 24bit. if you have distorion then your gain levels are not correct. make sure your input levels are somewhere between -18 and -6dB, not close to 0. and use the right ASIO driver for your interface.

ASIOGuard in Cubase allows you to have a low buffer on the track you are recording and a higher buffer on the playback tracks, for lower CPU usage.

Hmm very detailed and good explanation but unfortunately I can't seem to solve my latency issue. I'm trying to use Neural DSP for guitar to PC with a UA Volt1 interface.. By the time I can actually hear effects it's delayed, cracking and popping, and cutting out.. Sounds awfullllll. Can't seem to solve this. Very fast computer.

    Hi !
I have a big problem. I bought a new Prism Titan and I work with the latest Protools! My problem is that when I record vocals or instruments, I have a lot of latency, no matter how much I set it to 32 buffer sizes in the playback engine... I would like to ask if the same problem happens to you and if so, is there any way to fix this? problem?

GNU/Linux distributions (and UNIX systems like BSD, etc.) have:
ALSA, JACK (makes it able to basically connect/route almost anything to anything, like a virtual kind of patchbay, both signals going in as out, as 'in the box', including MIDI signals), Pulseaudio (supports surround and audio over networking and such, most modern audio tricks, but not really used for audio production itself) & OSS.
Just like Mac OS X - OS X is a UNIX system, Linux is UNIX-like, they 'tune' to the same standard called 'POSIX', so much functionality is very similar - , most soundcards/audio interfaces work 'out of the box' on Linux systems, especially those which are 'class compliant'.
Linux operating systems are cool in a sense as certain drivers (for lots of peripherals, not talking solely about sound here) are included in the kernel itself - Linux is a 'kernel', not an operating system, a kernel in short words is the very basis of an operating system - as so called 'kernel modules'.
I'm an open-source fanboy or something, that's why I state it here.

  • @maralara
    @maralara 2 года назад

First you say that the larger the buffer, the better is for latency (although overcharges the system). But later you suggest put the buffer as low as possible to improve latency. Bit contradictory, no?

The analog mixer and direct monitoring AI solutions are excellent if all you're recording is hardware, whereas all my tools are software T_T. Therefore, my solution is the CPU and PC build, which thankfully manufacturers have greatly stepped up in recent times :D

I'm having a problem with a slight delay between my spdif and analogue outputs on my focusrite 8i6 1st gen. It gives it a kind of chorus type effect with them both on. I'm thinking I might just have to live with it. I set the clock to spdif but that turns off the analogue outputs.
