- LYRICS (as I interpreted):
Am I the shade or a shadow?
Well, I can't really tell.
Well, I still can't remember if your eyes were brown, or green, or red.
And I shan't remember if your eyes were even playing a part,
In the moments that I was living,
In the moments that lived inside my heart.
I wish I paid attention to every word that you ever said,
But you always spoke in a whisper and I ain't so good at listening.
I can't remember if your eyes were blue, or green, or red,
Well you always spoke in a whisper and I ain't so good at listening.
(vocalization with lead guitar)
Harsh words from my mother,
Well, it turned out they were nice.
She said, "If you continue down this path, you're not the only one who dies".
A few months later, we were told that you were gone,
Well, the last I can remember was your eyes were brown, green, or blue[?].
(vocalization with lead guitar)
I wish I paid attention to every word that you had said,
But you always spoke in a whisper and I ain't in your head.
Well I can't remember if your eyes were green, or blue, or red,
But you always spoke in a whisper and I ain't so good at listening.
(vocalization with lead guitar)
A few days later, they found you frozen in your car,
Well, the last time you were seen leaving the YMCA from the showers.
Am I the shade or a shadow? Well I can't really tell,
And I still can not remember if your eyes were even there at all...
(vocalization with lead guitar)
Yeah, things were shaky, as I know they often are,
But after seven years together, I remember the back of the police car.
Yeah, things get crazy shaky sometimes when too fucked up,
And if I'd been in my right mind, I would have called the whole fuckin' thing off.
My heart pumps faster than could possibly be right[?],
And I [???] so many pumps in your whole life.
[breakdown]
Well I can't remember if your eyes were green, or brown, or red,
But you always spoke in a whisper and I'm not in your head.
I can't remember if your eyes were even there at all,
Well, you always spoke in a whisper and I-----

Wow, this song sounds like pain and you can see it in Isaac's face at the end... my heart aches rewatching this... but I love it.
With this song and the two I've heard in VIP, I'm STOKED for whatever new music Modest Mouse releases next... "Remember Yourself, Not Me" (as Isaac called it in the Maryland VIP) is another one that tugs on the heartstrings and made me tear up hearing it.
I'm really hoping we get the 2 new songs as singles after the tour is over (or all 3, though Isaac mentioned writing Surfin' Your Couch specifically for VIP after he played it in Philly, so I'm not sure if that would be released outside the little record we got).

Love it
I'm really glad Isaac found positivity in golden casket, but regular ol downtrodden nihilistic Mouse is just so so good. Glad it's back.
Yeah, I didn't love The Golden Casket in terms of style. But it was certainly unique. Nihilistic, instrumental Mouse = Best Mouse.
easily the best recording of this so far. lyrics are super clear
Losing my mom last month who was my best and only friend. this song hits hard, and probably always will for me.
Im so sorry for your loss. Stay strong and think of good memories with her. Tomorrow is 5 years since my mom died and I miss her every day.
“My heart pumped faster than could possibly be right
I read in a magazine this week you only get so many pumps in your whole life”
Best guess
This takes me back to This Is a Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About. What a masterpiece.
trailer trash to wooden soldiers to this. a new favorite for me
Thank you! Heard them play this last night, such a heartbreaking song.
You're so welcome! :D I hope your concert experience was as good as mine was!!
I'm really hoping we get both new songs (this and Remember Yourself, Not Me) released as singles after the tour is over. Both songs are incredible live and really pull on those heartstrings.
@@spitting_venom I hope so too!
This was my 6th mm show, I've seen them in both tiny and huge venues, and they never fail to give it their all. Absolutely amazing live performers.
It was my 50th show
He's not the shade or the shadow, he's the sun.
Heard this last night at the seattle show !!! Really really gorgeous song 💚
Aye!! Same here!! Went to RUclips to specifically find this song
Me too!!! Just finally found it….this might be my new fave….so gooooood!!!
That was my favorite part of that amazing Seattle paramount concert
They played two full cds….awesome show
Thank you for the clear upload, as well as the lyrical interpretation. Great stuff! Incredible song, my favorite new one by a mile
This is so fuckin good. Excited for their new stuff
Ok meu amigo bomdia valeu ok😊❤❤😂🎉🎉😮😮😮
I think the mother stanza says “blue or green or blonde”? 🤷🏻♀️
is this song about Sam from Love as Laughter?
I wondered about that as well. But the 7 years ago line, plus some other details, have me thinking it could be someone else
I think it is
Does that shirt say "Yngwie who?"?? Like Malmsteen? Lmao wtf
Yeah! I want him to turn around and see if it says what my shirt said. My dad bought me a Yngwie shirt from their G3 tour back in the day, and the back said Yngwie fucking Malmsteen. I felt so badass as a teen wearing that.
It does!!! It says YNGWIE FUCKING MALMSTEEN THAT'S WHO. hell yeah. Mine had different font. But maaan that makes me happy.
MM can absolutely rock out/jam - they don’t have to be stuck in this dirge groove Isaac seems to have forgotten this. Less agile with more members. They were once so good, but every band eventually becomes a shadow of what they were
dudes against personal growth. madddd
You suck
