Thank you! I dont know why everyone else on the internet ties this knot in the other direction. This way seems so much more intuitive to me

It's not just the question of direction. This is not the right Icicle Hitch. In the correct version, after five loops the working end comes back up diagonally and around from top (similar to pipe hitch but the icicle hitch has different finish than pipe hitch).. Compare closely and you will see this is not correct Icicle Hitch.

wikipedia Icicle Hitch has same direction as this video (pull to left) but compare finished knot images. You will see it's not the same.

I will say that I'm a fan of the icicle hitch since it's a very cool knot and does its job quite well. However, I find that in all cases EXCEPT for when there's a taper on an object that a 4-wrap prusik knot (not sure if there's a more technical term for this) is superior. It can be applied to the object much more quickly than the icicle hitch, it can be loaded effectively in any direction (this is an opinion based on experience, I haven't run the numbers), and it does very well on slick surfaces like metal pipes (same warning as before). It's also easier to dress and to ensure you tied correctly in a pinch, where as the icicle hitch takes quite some practice especially since it's a very situational knot.

Cool. I checked out your pipe hitch the other day, and a few other icecicle hitch videos. All including yours said pull laterally, but this on is nicer? So Instead of only working along the rope, since it fully incorporates the clove hitch, it's good for holding away from the pipe as well as laterally. After tons of searching basically almost considered going with a prussic. But I've now been told to just go with 2 clove hitches (doubled rope so, I think it's 16 wraps) 8 uplines which I am not happy about and the reason I've steered away since I've mostly thought people were just doing a bunch of barrel wraps.

This is icorrectly tied and is NOT an icicle hitch. At 1:24 you need go across to the left DIAGONALLY so you end up with the working end going down behind the bar.

Yes, this is not right. Find "Icicle Hitch - how to tie it in the middle of an object" -- that one is proper Icicle Hitch

Great to learn! Is it for a light duty lift only or can you use it for “pull out a frozen drive shaft” kind of job as well?

It will hold to the breaking strength of the rope when properly seated.

Please compare closely. This version (even if it works great) is not right Icicle Hitch

Sorry to say, but this is incorrectly tied. I like the knot, but it's not an icicle hitch.

Hey Ben, The Icicle Hitch appears to have the same function as a Pipe Hitch. It seems you only need one. If you could only use one, which would it be & why?

I use the pipe hitch most of the time, only because I can tie it faster. The Icicle Hitch is stronger, and the knot scheduled for the next video is even better. All of these knots are fine for most applications.

According to an article I saw Icicle Hitch is prefered (compared to sailor's gripping hitch -- not sure about pipe hitch). However this video hitch (maybe it's good i don't know) is not correct Icicle Hitch.

Looks sort of like cow hitch, clove hitch and friction hitch all combined.

this is not correct.. watch the video "Icicle Hitch - how to tie it in the middle of an object" that is different than in this version. I don't think this is right version
