I mean, he is basically good at everything. Excellent macro, excellent micro, excellent understanding of the game (in other words excellent strategy)

He is spot on. Viper has excellent macro and ability to manage few thing at once. That is how he usually win games as well.
The most significant thing Viper does is to keep his options open until he knows exactly what he needs. Unless he's meme'ing a masterpizza, he generally makes sure he knows what is going on before committing to anything.
I love Grubby's look, he's still in the 90's or 2000's MTV Backstreet boys era lol

Viper knows his tech switches. I watched last tournament and thought that's what stood out the most
Greedy AF but speedy enough to deal with the attempt of punishing it. Either its not getting adressed and vipey is up a bit or he reacts, quickwalls, safes or just minimises damage and ends up equal.
Mapawareness and scouting leaves him almost unvulnerable against surprises to minimise overreaction. Again, greedy to defend with only as little as needed and be up in eco.
Once familiar with these strenghts u might assume its only defense. While he is good at reacting till he floods the enemy with multiple attacks which all get microed, it is still a 7/10 strategy mind that can overrun an opponent who tries his style with beeing greedy.
Once dictating his gameplan, not the opponents it is his apm that gives him the upper hand even against most pros.
Agree, his defeats are usually because opponent overfloods him in defense, when he shoud have invested a little more
think that is also the reason why Hera is now getting the better of him. Exploits his greed and arguably has even better micro now not allowing Viper to quickwall/micro his way out of his greed.
He's the reason AOE got an increase in players

Greed. Loved that economy. What makes viper disgusting is he will put micro you at the same time. Even if you win a good engagement. He’s probably taking a lead on macro. I want a documentary on the YEARS of dominance The Viper had.
Vipers playstyle is what I would call "Joker". Everyother pro makes a plan at the beginning of a matchup, but this man is like: "Do I look like a guy with a plan?" - He makes things work that shouldn't work, he doesn't really give a shit about the meta, etc. He's an anti-hera. Hera plays meta in it's perfection (with the downside that this is very predictable) while Viper throws that off the window, he does whatever he likes and on top of that he doesn't nearly pull it off perfectly, but he still makes it work.
I know Grubby from the legendary WCG 2008 Grand Final - Grubby vs Moon. So cool to see him play AoE2
I've no idea what viper's style is. He's maybe like the queen in chess
I think his ability to trust himself in defence is what makes him "greedy". He'll back himself to either trap the opponent, or house/gate wall him toward the TC... then he's able to drop castles everywhere. And I still don't know how.

I think it is catastrophe management, he makes the game chaos by being greedy, and then is so flexible and knowledgeable that it is nearly impossible to keep up.
The greedy expansionist playstyle is my favorite. Economy boom so I can build defenses amd then send a constant stream of siege equipment and whatever trash unit to counter the enemy. Then I micro one cav archer unit with scorpions slowly around the corner. I never stop producing villagers or Spearman and swordsman. If the enemy is using crossbones then I will spam skirmishes. Bit you must always have a small force by your scorpions and you must always be producing battering rams and trebuchets. 3 trebuchets on the attack and 3 in reserve. After my 3 on attack are destroyed I send in the next 3 amd make 3 more. All stone and gold on the map is to be mined. I have an ungodly amount on wood and I use the wood for more gold if I meed it.
Viper won King of Arabia by making town centers and not walling at all. I think greedy is a good descriptor.

Vipi plays the silver-style in aoe2.
Greedy, but knows how to defend it. Even on the rare occasion his defenses falter, launches devastating counterattacks especially with archer/cav archer/hand cannon civs that often bring him back into the game. Also likes to quickwall and do the occasional mastapizza. :)

Its a shame that Microsoft destroyed this legendary game in one single patch. The people responsible for all that will be dragged to hell by me personally.
