One of my favorite parts is how Little Bill explains to Beauchamp how being fastest on the draw doesn’t mean you win. Being calm and collected does.
Which is exactly how it went down in the end with Munny. He faced 5 guys and shot them reliably and steadily, while they were just throwing bullets around in panic.
    Kind of a quiet callback.

After watching the movie a handful of times, I noticed that Pre-Ned's death, William always answered or ended conversations with a question. Once he became the Old William, he ended conversations with zero questions. Which if you look at him farming and raising kids, he was lost and unsure what to do, he was not his true self. It is a great movie.

    • @richardrobbins8067
      @richardrobbins8067 2 года назад +7

      Good point.
He was still trying to adapt to being a good family-oriented pig farmer. His wife had tried her best but unfortunately passed, leaving him with the kids. He was essentially a killing machine tamed.

Fun Fact: This was the first movie Clint Eastwood knew he wanted to direct, but he didn't want it to be the first movie he directed. He wanted to make sure he got it right. This movie was Clint Eastwood's homage to Sergio Leone, who directed the so-called spaghetti westerns you mentioned above, which gave Clint Eastwood his rise to prominence as an actor.

I couldn't agree more, I think that's what I loved most about this film; there's no objective "good guy" at all. Simply a group of flawed characters getting by, it's something I came to appreciate more going through it again for editing.

A film that fits your description would be "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" a masterpiece that dwarfs "Unforgiven". The film is well-made, well-acted etc. but I am baffled to be in the minority that sees the ethical problem: the two guys didnt deserve to die, period. They didn't kill, didn't deserve to be killed and much less to get that whole BS speech about hell-of-a-thing to kill a man... then dont kill them, asshole. One of them was a nice kid who tried to apologize for something he never did. And so whatever chain of events that starts with these killings was Munny's fault and I couldnt feel sorry for him. Asking me to root for the prospect of killing two men who didnt kill wasn't the antithesis of Western, but of Eastwood's whole filmography... his characters could be morally corrupt but their actions still had a point. I guess I missed the point but Eastwood is one of my favorite directors I saw almost all his films and yet I have that block with his all-tile "masterpiece"

The anti-hero story. The Spaghetti Westerns of the 60's and 70's made that popular and it's what made Clint famous if course. I literally have hundreds of SW films. Many have no good guys just different degrees of bad guys. Some were psychopathic and killed just for fun which you couldn't find in American Westerns at the time. Crazy film genre, Italian directors, filmed in in Spain, with mostly Italian and Spaniard actors but some Americans ( like Clint), Germans, French and other Euros.

To me, Unforgiven is the bow of Eastwood's "man with no name" gunslinger. If you've seen all his westerns first, this is super impactful. He's not looking for forgiveness, he doesn't deserve to be forgiven, he simply needs to be left alone.

Gene Hackman has mentioned that he has always been deeply uncomfortable in violent roles. And yet, his two most violent portrayals, in William Friedkin’s The French Connection (1971) and in Unforgivem (1992), won him his two Academy Awards, Best Actor in the former and Best Supporting in the latter. The French Connection was the first R rated film ever to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

"Back then, kids must have been left to fend for themselves"
When I was those kids age in the 1970s, I was free to roam the whole neighborhood, several blocks radius. And all the other kids were just as free. There really was no limit, since once you're out of sight of your house, there's nobody who can say no. I cringe every time I see a parent walking with their kid so the kid can ride a bike, parents watching over their kids at a playground, parents waiting at the bus stop to give their kid a ride home. Unheard of in the 1970s.
Japan goes even farther. They send kids on train rides to different cities and stuff. They have a saying in Japan: "Send the beloved child on a journey."
The US trend toward hypervigilance really took off in the 1980's, which was arguably justifiable at the time, since the national violent crime rate was at a multi-decade peak, and probably the highest ever. The crime rate today is less than half of what it was in the 80's, and significantly lower than in the 70's, but the dysfunctional hypervigilance persists, largely because anything less is unfortunately still considered child abuse.

Little Bill was confident. But in the presence of a real monster, even his confidence wavered, to the point that even if he got to shoot first, he didn't hit William.. at such a short range.
William, being intoxicated, regardless of the fact that he was driven by rage, had a sense of calmness and sureness to him. Being the monster he is, he probably wasn't even thinking that he was going to die that night. He just needed to do what he had to, to resolve his anger.

The reason the pistol had only 5 bullets was because safety guards weren't a thing. Most cowboys loaded pistols with 5 bullets with the 1st chamber empty in case a horse jostled or he inadvertently slipped and fell from just walking. Pulling the hammer would load the next bullet into place.

Yeah leavin kids THAT HAVE BEEN TAUGHT HOW TO SURVIVE alone was normal. Hell, I was left on my grandpa's farm at 8 years old, by myself, with a list of chores to do while they were gone for 4 days. I didnt need to kill chickens for food, but bet your ass I had to wrangle them cows into their stalls for milking, which I did. Took a bath at night, drank some of grandpa's whiskey, got up 4:30 am next morning and do it again..maybe mow the lawn too. This was 1975. Our gen is built different. Diff times and responsibilities. WOOT WOOT! Great reaction!

I love the literal bookends to the movie with the scrolling text, which hints that the story is told by Beauchamp as the factual western novel he wanted to write.

    Try some other classic Westerns:
"The Big Country" (1958) Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Charlton Heston
    - an A-List production with good characters, impressive scenery & cinematography, and an all-star cast & director.
"A Man Called Horse" (1970) Richard Harris - white captive finds out about Indian life; a beautiful movie.
"Little Big Man" (1970) Dustin Hoffman, Chief Dan George, Faye Dunaway - another epic movie; picaresque mix of drama and humor.
"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (1966) Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach - best of the spaghetti Westerns that made Eastwood famous.

It's a great film; compassionate and brutal and kind of pure. Little Bob wanted to keep the filth out of his chosen place and was willing to take extreme measures for that, and his terrible carpentry is touching, I think. Also, the actual act of killing, cold-blooded, is not left unweighted like a 'normal' Western. It is given gravitas and impact. There are repercussions. A masterpiece, in my humble opinion.

The thing I notice with the Big Whisky no guns ordinance, is that Little Bill and his guys think that what they're doing is keeping the place safe and stopping violence. But they don't notice the violence they do, or more like that Little Bill does, and they don't notice the violence of how the women at Greeley's saloon are treated. That's some huge blinders they have on, that the violence of capitalism and sexual violence and police violence doesn't count, and right to the end they think they're the good guys keeping the peace. Hence Little Bill claiming "I don't deserve this."

Back in the day, kids were not seen as "soft and unable to be useful" like today. Those were rough times and parents taught them to defend and depend on themselves cause they knew dying young and before the kids were grown was all to common. Sad to see how far we have fallen from then until now. Kids then worked and earned things, kids today expect things handed to them on a silver platter and they take a ton of heat for that but remember, they know what they were taught. Parents get off easy when they have the most fault. Ok, enough "preaching" from me. Just wanted to say things we so different, for better or worse.
