  • Homemade Hamburger and Hotdog Buns
    1 package active dry yeast
    1 cup warm water
    3 cups all purpose flour
    1 large egg
    4 tablespoons melted butter
    3 tablespoons white sugar
    1 1/4 teaspoons salt
    1 teaspoon olive oil
    1. Add warm water and yeast to mixing bowl. Let sit for 10 minutes, or until yeast looks puffy and soft.
    2. Add egg, butter, sugar, salt, and oil. Stir with whisk.
    3. Add flour, one cup at a time. Stir with whisk until mixture becomes thick. Then, use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment, or knead by hand for several minutes until dough is firm and all the flour has been incorporated into the mixture.
    4. Remove dough from mixing bowl. Rinse bowl until clean, and then lightly coat inside of bowl with oil.
    5. Return dough to bowl, cover with a light towel and allow dough to rise for approximately two hours, or until mixture has doubled in size.
    6. Remove risen dough from bowl and turn out onto floured work surface. Knead dough by hand for several minutes, until all air bubbles have been removed.
    7. Divide dough into approximately 10 equal pieces. Form dough pieces into desired shape. Make flat circles for hamburger buns, or long "snake" shaped pieces for hot dog buns.
    8. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, or coat pan with butter and flour, to prevent dough from sticking to pan.
    9. Set dough pieces approximately 1/2 inch apart, cover with a light towel, and allow buns to rise until almost doubled. Allow about one hour.
    10. Bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees F until lightly browned, about 15-17 minutes. Buns will stick together along the edges.
    11. If possible, remove buns from pan and allow them to cool on a cooling rack or on a towel on the counter.
    12. Once cooled, separate individual buns, and use a bread knife or other serrated knife to cut buns in half. Then serve with desired toppings.
Enjoy! This recipe makes absolutely delicious hamburger and hotdog buns. They would also be great used for meatball subs, or lunchmeat subs.

Trying it now. They came out looking great. I changed it up a little, spritzed sesame oil on top and added sesame seeds before cooking. Can’t wait to taste them with Sloppy Joes tonight.

Good afternoon ma'am. I just happened across this video yesterday and decided to give it a try. I must say that these buns are the best tasting buns that our family has ever had. We will be making more next weekend for sure, and I'm sure many more after that. Thank you very much and have a day!

Looks great! I will have to try your recipe. I tried another recipe for hamburger buns and the taste was wonderful except it puffed up so much it was hard to take a bite. Yours looks good too but more like a normal hamburger bun.

This is very different when not adding sugar to the yeast and adding the salt in the yeast. I want to make buns so I’ll try it. But I hope to have soft buns. I made buns before and they were a bit too firm.

I noticed u didn't add any sugar to feed the yeast is there a reason why u didn't add some to the warm water?

hi this is Sue, as a woman who has been making bread for many years, you need to add at least a tablespoon of sugar to feed your yeast.. At the 10 minute mark you should have a good inch of foam. Salt should be added with your flour, it can kill your yeast. NEVER, NEVER go above #2 on your stand mixer it will burn your motor out fast, You should also put alittle oil on all of that ball of dough, and put it in the oven with the proofing setting or just the light, with a bread pan filled with boiling hot water, to help with the rise and and hour and a half is plenty of time to let it rise. When it has risen, you don't need to kneed it again, just punch it down and do what ever your going to do with it, eg. buns, loaves, etc. You need a scale to you can weigh out equal amouts, l now hamburger buns for us are 85 grams. and hotdog buns are 75 grams. and a loaf of bread is 400 and for a large loaf 800 grams. A hint, when forming your buns, let them rest for 10 minutes before smushing them.

You misspelled knead. Take it easy, or maybe make a video with all of your corrections.

Almost every rubber spatula head will pop off the wooden handle and, voila!, dough scraper. Also, investing in a stainless steel bench scraper is a must.

certainly hope that viewers realize that it's just high speed filming you are doing and you aren't really mixing that dough on such a high speed...speed 2 is max speed for making bread doughs

It makes me cringe when people crack eggs in the side of the bowl and then put it directly into the mix. Great way for your guests or family to chew on an egg shell.

Absolutely AMAZING that you still work with the imperial measuring system. Your 'one cup of flour' is totally different than the same cup in someone else house. As a matter of fact, I would bet a cup of flour varies as much as 10 grams in YOUR house.
