I don't know why, but it's weird that Night City was a very futuristic and advance city. But it has the same vibe like Mega City One from Judge Dreed where living on the city outskirt (which both basically a wasteland) was better than living in the city itself
It's intentional. That's the core of the cyberpunk aesthetic and ideology. Can also add Robocop to the list. While it's not cyberpunk per say, it's the same general idea: mega corporations that move in and take over entire cities turning them into paradises for the rich who can live in excess protected by PMCs that replace local law enforcement, but is hell for everyone else who are left to wallow in their own filth barely able to scrape by. As for Dredd and Cyberpunk 2020/2077, they go a step further by being post nuclear war settings. So the emphasis on the corruption of the corporations taking over is amplified tenfold because it comes down to the choice of living in the bombed out desolate wastelands, or putting up with the corruption and filth of the mega cities.

It’s been striking me as odd that so many people treat David’s story after meeting Lucy as a tragedy that could have ended happily but for bad decisions and poor luck. Unless I’m missing something the kid was: 1. Fresh-made orphaned 2. Destined for *at best* a dead-end corporate drone job at Arasaka 3. Probably going to get kicked out the Academy anyway 4. Absolutely at-risk for self-unaliving (he absolutely had no reason to expect to survive the implantation) 5. Within several hundred miles of Night City in any capacity From the moment Gloria died David was on a borrowed timer that was getting awful close to done, and Lucy and Maine’s crew gave him reason, resource, and opportunity to keep going the entire rest of his time. Yeah that time was *made* of unhealthy coping mechanisms and lifestyle choices, but with that time he made friends, took out some seriously bad people, and bloodied Arasaka enough that two of their most valued assets at the time both got tossed far out of their reach. After the opening David was never going to have a happy ending, but damn did he give what he could to get Lucy a chance at one.

Night City is us currently just dialed up to 11. give it a hundred years and we will probably be somewhere similar. But that does remind me of a scene in the game where you fix up a rollercoaster by the beach and ride it with Johnny. We don't fundamentally change but that can be a good thing. imagine a bunch of punks using their time just trying to get a old rollercoaster running again. They do it for a little bit of enjoyment in an otherwise hateful and dangerous city. that's how we as humans exist now. going from shitty experience to the next but with brief moments of comic relief that make it worth it.

"I don't have no ego" shows even tertiary characters dying meaningless deaths. "Heart is growin colder" follows the first time David killed of his own desire. And then back into David going through the motions.

Just finished watching this anime and it was great.I just wanted to say. Wow! What a great anime based on the game. And for that, animes and games did great over the years. Such as Guilty Gear, Citrus, Metal Gear Solid 5, Sonic X (not the 4kids version), The King of Fighters, Code E, Fighting EX layer, Radukai kishi no cavalry, Time Crisis, Amanchu, and the rest. I know it sounds stupid that I grew up liking animes and games mixing together. But I wanted to see a cross over series when anime characters would interact with game characters.
Me watching edge runners: Ooh, this is a cool show, and it has a cool concept! The characters are also built super well. They will probably all liv- oh no

I’m so used and obsessed with listening to music, that I can feel every emotion just from a song. But interestingly enough, I can’t really describe how this song makes me feel. Maybe a mix of some sort of weird nostalgia combined with a worry about the future. A weird, unthinkable worry about how we as humans will somehow but possibly develop further into a destructive species with violent behaviors, and that the world will collapse way faster than we think.
