- On the left and going first, a 1979 Herschede Edinburgh with 9 nickel plated tubes which, according to Herschede marketing materials, are made from a special steel alloy custom developed for Herschede and designed to provide superb tonal quality and resonance. On the right and going last, a 1982 Herschede Sheffield with 9 tubes Herschede calls golden-washed, which are of course actually made of brass not gold. The clock faces are adorned with real gold, but I digress. The newer clock's sound is also affected by its being made after Herschede's 1980 retooling. Certainly the clocks made after the retooling have a much needed longer pause between chiming and striking. The older clocks can be modified with an updated part to create this longer pause but installation of that part requires full disassembly, so it has not yet been installed in my Edinburgh. The larger issue we explore in this video is the tonal quality of the nickel-plated tubes versus the brass and the difference between the two. Which do you like better? 4k UHD video created with iPhone X and its built-in microphone, recorded at a distance of approximately 15 feet in a typical residence with a 19 foot ceiling and hardwood floor. Let me leave you with a favorite quote perfectly suited to this video, "A man with a clock always knows the time. A man with two clocks is never quite sure."
The Edinburgh’s too early striking issue is likely due to the movement having been reassembled incorrectly after service. A common problem that I run into on a lot of these where a previous repairman did not ensure that the hour strike hammer drops completely before the train comes to a stop, thus leaving the hammer partially retracted which causes it to drop as soon as the train takes off. It’s a very simple adjustment where the strike gathering pallet has to be popped off and rotated a quarter or half turn and then put back on. I own 8 pre 1962 Herschede clocks and all have a proper pause between the chime and strike with the gathering pallet set properly. I’ll also make it worthwhile to note that the Edinburgh would sound much deeper and mellow with some new leather hammer pads.
No opinion I just love both because I'm a huge lover of clocks; especially grandfather clocks!
Jesus Lover888 yeah me too
Same
me too
I love grandfather clocks! When they chime, it’s like they are singing to you it’s beautiful 2:40 4:29❤ I literally hug mine 😂
My Howard Miller kind of looks like that one on the right. This video gave me an idea of what to do when i get my other grandfather clock
The clock on the right seems to have a much richer, and mellow sound to it.
I like both.
My boy got 2 of them!
I want 2
I like both of them. They are from Herschede. As for the question of, why have 3 clocks in the same room.....I have 4 grandfather clocks in my foyer. Yes, they are like sentinels keeping guard.
The Sheffield has always been my favoeite clock in the Herschede line. Perhaps one day I shall own one.
someday you will. keep it up
i love the classic sounds of a herschede
The clocks look great. They look like 2 sentinels keeping guard.
Steel sounds more softer but brass sounds more mellower
Very nice clocks. I love them.
Seems the chimes on the left vibrate longer, but the sound waves from the chimes seems to cause the ones on the left to resonate with one another. Nothing wrong with that though!
i'd say both, Weli Because, the steel has more of a well, more "sustainable" sound. and the brass, it sounds like church bells, which i love.
can you video the Edinburgh chiming canterbury???
They’re beautiful but I do prefer twins. I have a grandfather who used to put together clocks.
I love clocks
Never been a fan of tubular chimes. I prefer chime rods for the melody, and a nice big coil gong to strike the hour.
It is strange why herschede did release a product with the wery annoing short pause. After all these clocks where the top of the line. They probably made them this way for many many years, untill the changed tooling in 1980?
Davvero molto belli❤❤
I'm listening on my phone and the brass sounds more church bell like to me. Much nicer. Might sound different in the room
Brass. I prefer the older Herschede clocks. My wife agrees that the brass sounds best.
Why have 3 clock in same room 2 grandfather clocks on each side and mantel clock on mantel pice
Why not... ?
Because he can.
LOL.......if you have to ask you will never understand the answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What do Edinburghs sell for nowadays, roughly? I've been looking at several different clocks recently and it is my favorite so far.
i like steel. Brass sounds too “in yer face “ to me. both are good.
brass has a clearer sound
Brass is a bit less after ressonans. I have a 79 de lafayette my self, and also have the to short pause between chimes and hour strike. Where can i get the updated part for a longer pause?
Regards terje
it's the second clock that's the best
Brass. But maybe I’m partial to my Herschede.
Only vintage ones can sound like church bells, more brilliant than modern ones. Kieninger sounds too delicate for me.
What one has the brass tubes
Brass tubes are on the right, steel on the left.
By the left clock is the quarter strike loud but the hour strike not. And by the right clock is the hour strike loud but the quarter not. Strange
That’s what I thought. The chimes on the left seem to resonate, vibrate, and linger for a longer time. Nothing wrong with that. The hour strike on the right seems more clear and clangy.. nothing wrong with that either.
I think steel tubes are better than brass tubes
Steel
but both are nice
What one chimed first?
the Edinburgh on the left
Clocks near a fire place that’s not fine maybe cause metal expand
Do you know how hot it would have to be for that to happen 😒
Those clocks sound like they're in need of cleaning and re-oiling.
My opinion
Both sound fine. But not a realistic sound , coming from a "typical" home with a 19 ft ceiling!

Tube bells are better
puts my clock to shame
