- In episode two of our tour of the Atacama Desert, we are overwhelmed with the stunning wildlife at Laguna Chaxa. The flamingos were awesome! Drive up to 4000m to the high altitude salt flats at Piedras Rojas, and visit the lake craters at Lagunas Miscanti y Miñiques. The tour of the Atacama Desert continues when we also take a short break at the tiny village of Toconao the only significant inhabited village close to San Pedro.

Hi we didn't and I cannot say I saw anyone with one on the trip. It may not be possible in those parts.
@@MemorySeekers thanks for replying. RV rentals look very expensive. Some people said it’s not convenient in that part of Chile.
Yes I think they are right better to base yourself in San Pedro and travel around from there.
Vicuña is what you saw, not alpaca. Vicuña is most expensive fabric on earth (thousands per kilo) and heavily protected. Alpaca is domesticated, not protected. Vicuña are the skinny very graceful looking ones. The heavier messy looking ones are guanaco, also not domesticated and equally as expensive
