Had my left foot nearly torn in half at ponce inlet back in august of 95. 45 stitches. Some tips to reduce a shark encounter. Don’t surf alone. Go for the popular crowded spots. Try not to surf in murky water. Sharks are more likely to bump or test bite you in murky water. Don’t surf during twilight hours. Early morning and late afternoon/evening. This is prime feeding time. And try not to surf when bait fish are present. When I got bit I broke all these rules.

Some of the most popular spots.. such as piers and inlets are the sharkiest... and a little less sitting up on your board in the lineup during.."shark season" 😂..

I grew up surfing Florida in the 80's and Monster Hole is sometimes the best left in Florida ! Also the scariest paddle out ever ! Especially at first light ! You can feel the sea life around you ! The worst shark encounter I ever had was at Blind Pass between Sanibel and Captiva island ! I was knocked up into the air as soon as I got out over the sandbar into deeper water ! My friend that was about 30' away said it was at least a 16-18' Hammerhead ! It literally tossed me up into the air like a toy .......and I weighed about 235 pounds but I didn't get bit ! Only damage was to the bottom of my surfboard and it had a straight crease that went across the bottom from one end to the other ! It was a 22" wide board !

    • @SurfAllDayA1A

That is INSANE! The big hammerheads are like monsters to me. Great story though.

@@SurfAllDayA1A It's true and that's not the only time I've posted it in the comments ! It was back in like the 90's if my memory serves me correct ! I've been out at the North Jetty in Ft. Pierce when literally thousands of blacktops and hammerheads where doing their North to south migration and it was pretty hairy ! First we where surrounded by millions of bait fish.....then the trapon came...... Then the sharks ! I saw two big tarpon get eaten by hammerheads and by then I noticed me and my friend where the last two surfers out with over a hundred on the beach ! When we got to shore the surfers said three 6-8' blacktips followed us right up into knee deep water ! But hey no blood no foul ......right ?

Never surfed on a board in my life, but back in the day I body surfed off 13th street at Newport Beach, Calif. Didn't see any "men in grey suits" while I played in the white water there, but if I did I'd probably have limited all my subsequent water sports to the swimming pool. My fascination with sharks dates back to when Peter Benchley's novel "Jaws" came to life on the silver screen, way back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.
Listening to the zen-like cadence of this video clip's narration, it occurred to me that hard-core surfers are truly a breed apart from other mortals, in that they embrace an omnipresent danger that induces visceral terror in practically everyone else. The turbulent, murky waters captured in this drone footage greatly increase the odds of anyone out there suffering an "exploratory bite" of unpredictable severity, so my hat is off to you surfers that venture out there with regularity. Bawls of tempered steel are what y'all have.

Been buy Sebastian Inlet numerous times. The break on the North side next to the jetty is one of the best surf spots in Florida. When its good there is usually wave bounce off the jetty, producing an above average wave. The south side of the inlet is way different. It looks like a mirage out there. A way offshore sand bar with frequent strong tidal water going in and out of the inlet. The sand bar moves around daily. In all the times I've been by there I've only seen surfers out there once. My own opinion is there are too many large sharks in the area to surf that side of the inlet. The wave pitch is deceiving. You may find you need a long board to catch anything there. The north side by the jetty is way safer.

Beautiful video. As I consider again, I am reminded of the Fort Pierce Inlet and the 1/2 mile from shore sandbar. Also a brave spot. The Fort Pierce sandbar also extends over 20 miles north to Orchid, and seems to keep crawling North everyear! I should check that spot again. Great shots! Love the video. : )

The only other stories I've heard about surfing the inlet sandbar in Sebastian Inlet was by surfers doing mushrooms back in the 70's. 😜 There was more free parking.

The other thing was if you want to fish outside the inlet, it's really too dangerous for small boats.

This is the coolest video I've seen in a while. Gives one some perspective. Monster Hole looks very intense, gives me the willies imagining paddling out solo. I imagine one feels very satisfied and life affirmed after a successful sesh. Not many spots like this in NC. Hope to make it down to the warm waters of Florida this winter. Thanks for the great videos and philosophical / hilarious commentary!

Surfed Patricks AFB in the 80's sharks where the norm there. My wife use to say don't you see all those sharks. Never bothered us . But did have a friend who got bit on the heal at the Cocoa Beach Pier. Didn't see the blood until he was on shore. We taped up the puncture wounds and Both of us Surfed the rest of the day.

Very special place. Been lucky enough to score Monster Hole a few times when it was really on.
The takeoff peak can get very cramped and is a very competitive peak.
The inlet side still occasionally gets “good” but it is a slim shadow of what it used to be. Extremely over-hyped now and very fickle. First peak wedge is basically non-existent outside a couple days a year. The inlet usually just a very crowded shorebreak-esque wave with a ton of close outs and backwash.
There is a reason why very few contests are still held here.
Really have to have a depth of knowledge of swells-angle, period, size, combo swell, and drastic tidal affects of the inlet and Monster Hole.
The inlet nowadays is more of a fishing Mecca versus surfing.

Monsterhole is probably the scariest paddle out/in spot in Florida ! There are worse places to paddle out as far as the likelihood of getting bit by a shark in Florida ......but those places hardly ever break so not much is known about them ! There are a few passes on the Gulf side of Florida where Hammerheads and Bullsharks use as breeding grounds .......and the Hammerheads are massive there ! Ask me how I know ! Monsterhole is scary because the water is sometimes clear enough to see them swimming around you ......and there's some big sharks around there as well ! I've surfed all over Florida for a few decades and I've also seen hundreds of blacktips at Reef rd. in the dead of winter ......literally hundreds !

As a young teenage surfer in the early 70's, my father used to drop me off at Canaveral Pier on his way to work in the morning and later pick me up after work late in the afternoon, letting me surf all day. One day when he came to pick me up, I had been watching the fishermen on the pier trying to catch something big for quite some time. We went down to see what was going on and saw that they had reeled in a tiger shark that was working its way through the pilings and was about as long as the pier is wide...and I had been surfing just a few yards from there.

Very cool man. I visit the area a couple times a year to see my folks. I've been visiting this inlet since the late 80's as a kid and just recently (two years) got into surf photography. Sharks are always in the back of my mind when I swim out there with the water housing to photograph surfers. But it's risk we're willing to take to live the life we enjoy.

Yes, the reality is, chaos and malevolence exists and we will encounter it. A shark is really neither of those, simply a natural force like any other. And yes, it can hurt me. However, the heroes journey does not involve being less afraid, it is to become more brave and strong. I have friend who died while surfing, not from sharks, he had a heart attack. He actually had the heart attack while dropping into a perfect wave at the end of his street. Simply beautiful, no words needed to see that beauty. When we are moving towards what we love, come what may, we are already there.

I’ve never worried too much about sharks unless there’s a bait school with some thrashing going on. Even then, there’s safety in numbers. Although, I was out at the pier with like 20 other people on a 3 foot swell while a bait school was running north and I got slammed in the back between my shoulder blades by a 3-4 footer that left a rostrum shaped strawberry. I’ve also been out at the pier while a 14 foot hammerhead cruised through and doubled back just outside the lineup and all but me and one other ripper caught every set til the sun set 20 minutes later.

yessir Charles, an amazing philosophical exercise is to have a monster come up and give you a bump. Safety is an illusion, this is certain. Who would want that anyway? Rabbits focus on safety. I would rather be the thing that is strong enough to deal with a dangerous world. My thoughts anyway.

Kinda thought the music to be cheesy, but am recently working with the truths of chenrizig (Kwan Yin who l listens to the cries of the world) and the women are somehow reminding me of her. As I sit here in the wee hours trying to ride through the waves of cancer pain, I am glad you popped up in this thread response to me wanting to see fun shark and surfer vids.
