Your boat is looking so bright and beautiful - the background is almost like a zoom filter! And you obviously have very green fingers. I could do with you looking after some of my house plants!! 🪴 🥰

Sound advice Phil, we have a wood burning stove in a listed thatched cottage so you can imagine how careful we are !! Apart from the astronomical cost of insurance I wouldn't be without it - toasty

The "tick of reassurance" is a good idea!
I can somewhat related even though I don't have a wood stove, just my electric stove kept me paranoid. Having a furry four legged roommate at home made me worry even more!

OMG Phil. Thank goodness you had done it. Great idea about the tick!

My goodness no idea stoves could be so dangerous. We live and learn. Very interesting Phil. Thank you.

Thanks. Stoves are more dangerous than gas in a boat I would say.

As a kid in the 1950s. at home I sometimes used to light the fire in an ordinary grate using newspaper, wood
and coal. To draw the fire to get it going, I would prop the coal shovel in front of the grate and spread a double page
of broadsheet newspaper across the fireplace opening. Occasionally the fire would roar suddenly and set fire to the newspaper.
If you caught it in time you could blow out the flames. If not, you had to shove the paper on the fire where it would burn uncontrollably.
Worse still sometimes the newspaper would be drawn up the chimney and even set the chimney on fire.
Not what you wanted todo at 7 in the morning, when everyone else was still in bed. I never heard of Health and Safety.

Thank you. I wish I had more room for plants but just two or three is my limit in this tiny space unfortunately.

I think Squirrel stoves have a safety feature which prevents the ashtray door from opening when the stove door is closed. This makes it impossible to boost the airflow by leaving it open. In practice it makes it very difficult to light a sulky fire. Fortunately, I also believe the safety lock can be removed, with quite simple tools. Then one can light a fire and should certainly follow your advice above to the letter. Or tick.

Hi Neil, you're quite correct. The first Squirrel I had didn't have such a device fitted, but when I replaced it with a newer model, the newer one had it. However, as you say, it is simply removed by undoing two screws.

Mine's an old Squirrel so can be left open. Most other stoves are the same I think.

Yes, that short one you did about flooding 5 years ago, is still six times more popular than anything else! The RUclips algorithm is very weird.

You'd think it's simple with a stove, but you easily forget. Worrying about it is awful.
