this song is weird because it SOUNDS incredibly oppressive and suspenseful, but if you pay attention to the lyrics it's actually a surprisingly uplifting and positive message about living in the moment.
I blasted this record in my pitch black bedroom while laying on my back and staring at the ceiling. I was so involved that I didn't realize how loud it was. My mother came in and screamed at me for a good 10 seconds till I knew what was happening. No regrets here. Long live swans.

Late to this, but check out the seer by this band!! It's another album in the same vein as this one, but in my honest opinion is leagues better. It feels like you're witnessing a tribe in the deep wilderness reach some insane power, and it really just is probably the most insane record I've heard. So many sections are deranged and hellish while still somehow being beautiful and touching, seriously recommend!

Got into Swans thanks to RUclips, my wife just got me this album on vinyl for Christmas (I asked for it). Top tier, amazing stuff, I can't believe Tool gets so much credit (rightfully due, great band), and Swans isn't as widespread/commonplace as they are. So much originality and personality. Nothing else like it, really... not even Tool. This is just as good, but a whole different monster altogether.

December 2015. I was around 12-13, and a few months before I found out about a certain online music critic and his reviews. I decided I wanted to get into different sorts of music and hop right into the good stuff (i.e. the stuff Fantano gave a 10 to), and, for whatever reason, I was just pulled to 'To Be Kind' (guessing that had something to do with the album title + band name + striking cover art combo). Listened to this song, was taken aback. Whilst I had previous contact with more avant-garde rock music such as The Velvet Underground or modern classical composers such as Philip Glass thanks to my parents, I had never heard something quite like this before. Admittedly, it was a bit too much for me, so I ended up putting it on hold... until I remembered some parts of this song, out of the blue, and I decided to finally listen to the entire album. It changed my entire perspective on art. Almost ten years later, I'm still deeply moved by To Be Kind and this song in particular (the greatest opening to any album ever, in my humble opinion), and I'm eternally grateful to Swans' music for making me want to explore every single artform out there. This album is not just the reason why I care as much for music as I do, but it's also the reason why I'm as interested in art as I currently am. Thank you, mr. Gira and company, and RIP Bill Rieflin.

I decided I wanted to get into different sorts of music and hop right into the good stuff (i.e. the stuff Fantano gave a 10 to), and, for whatever reason, I was just pulled to 'To Be Kind' (guessing that had something to do with the album title + band name + striking cover art combo). Listened to this song, was taken aback. Whilst I had previous contact with more avant-garde rock music such as The Velvet Underground or modern classical composers such as Philip Glass thanks to my parents, I had never heard something quite like this before. Admittedly, it was a bit too much for me, so I ended up putting it on hold... until I remembered some parts of this song, out of the blue, and I decided to finally listen to the entire album.
It changed my entire perspective on art. Almost ten years later, I'm still deeply moved by To Be Kind and this song in particular (the greatest opening to any album ever, in my humble opinion), and I'm eternally grateful to Swans' music for making me want to explore every single artform out there. This album is not just the reason why I care as much for music as I do, but it's also the reason why I'm as interested in art as I currently am. Thank you, mr. Gira and company, and RIP Bill Rieflin.
