  • In anticipation of them going up in price! Here is a description of exactly what an Autodesk network license is and how it works, often also called a multi-user license or NLM.

    Excellent explanation Neil, nice seeing the guts of the Network License Manager for once.
    The only tidbit that could be mentioned is that if a user gets a collection license rather than a single app license and that user only uses one product it can obstruct other users who need software in that collection. Apologies if phrased badly. Example: User A only uses AutoCAD and so has an AutoCAD license on file but grabs a collection license which contains AutoCAD, It can stop User B for example getting an Inventor License.

      Even if a Collection has 16+ products in itself, it is considered as ONE license, you cannot divide it between several users. So, in a multi-user license environment, one license works on one computer. You can use more products in a same time, but on one computer.

    Great video. Thanks.
    Single user stand alone license can be used up to 3 computer.
    You can sign in to your Autodesk account and download and install the software assigned to you on up to three of your devices. For example, you can use your Autodesk product on your work computer, home computer, laptop....one use at a time and the same user only.

      Thanks, this helps.
      I have a small drawing office of 8 users, a couple of autocad, and 6 autocad LT. I was under the impression that any number of installs can be done by a user but they could only use the software from one point at a time so a few users including myself have already installed on multiple machines. I didn't realise there was an installation limit. I do have a couple of questions though, if I replace my pc when I run out of installs, do I simply contact my Autodesk reseller and have them transfer the license to the new machine? And as our Autodesk administrator if I remove a license from one user and give it to another user, does this mean they can install 3 versions on different machines or would we have problems?

      @@Nickgowans Check with Autodesk but I'm sure you can't switch license from one user name to another without to tell and probaly pay Autodesk. One the same user at the time on any of 3 PC is not an problem accordingly to Autodesk. How it works when user quit job , leave company? The company must notify Autodesk to assigne it to new user. I don't know if it is there any additional fee or number of switches per year involved? But definitely the user who left the job is not the owner of the license and the company must either cancel or transfer the license.
      Please check with Autodesk for correct details. Cheers, Mirso

    Good explanation, I had to learn this the hard way over the last few years. I would also add that the licence server is not smart, for example we have an AEC and a PDM licence and our users are not able to select which licence is used. This is a problem when one of our PDM users is the first to open an Autocad instance (say) and the server gives him the AEC licence (because it is alphabetically the first licence available) licence, then the AEC person wants to open Robot, but can't. So they have to shut down and start again. Not good. Also, don't forget that some network licence products allow you to generate a "Home" licence which means you can run an independent instance on your home computer (subject to usage rights).

      You can use OPTIONS FILE to specify which user, or group of users, use which license. Google ''NLM options file'', it has many options and it is not hard to setup.

    Neil do you do autocad videos? If so can you touch on autolisps and data extraction, some very compelling features of autocad which I think a lot of your subscribers might appreciate.

    Archaic indeed. I am extremely impressed with the longevity of Autodesk's usage of Flexlm. I guess if it ain't broken, don't fix it. That is until it breaks! :P

      I do like that fact that the license server manages cascading licenses. Really good for inventor STD/PRO usage in an office.

    From Last video You mentione that current network licences won't be more expensive. However we have only yearly subscribtion and every year when we renew it is bit more expensive and offered 3 year deals hardly cover money time value, or the price stays same for stand alone bought licenses with service contracts.

    Ok Neil...I still have a question about the network license. I am looking at AutoCAD LT and Inventor LT for my boss and I. My boss and I would only need it on two computers. One for me and one for him. Should we get a multi user license?

    • @freeman699
      @freeman699 4 года назад

      Hi. There is no multi-user license for LT products, so you can only get two single-user licenses. If you both need AutoCAD LT and Inventor LT on both computers, there is a bundle option called AutoCAD Inventor LT Suite where you get both products under one license, for lesser price.

    • @Nickgowans
      @Nickgowans 4 года назад

      Hi Caleb, double check if inventor LT is going to meet your needs, the issue I found was that you cannot create multiple part assemblies at all in LT, which if you ask me is the while point of inventor. It's a big cost at £2200 a year for the full version but it's so much more powerful than LT
