Good morning this is Robert from Fort Myers, thank you very much another video of good knowledge, I’m an owner operator and anything I can do to save up a little bit and economize on my business is always appreciate it👌👍👍
Thanks for sharing, I have done another method where I would start the engine and blank the turbo intake. If the engine died seconds later then no leak but if it still hesitate to die then you can start hearing air suction from wherever the leak is. Be safe bro, learning alot from your videos. Cheers from malaysia
@@jrowe9301 Yup take a piece of cardboard to blank it but be carefull as you don't want anything to be sucked in. If it stalls immediately then no problem but if it hesitate to die then you can start to hear hissing noise wherever the leakage is. This is just a quick check method with less tools needed or else you can follow this video mate
I started hearing an air leaking sound when boost goes up... I checked all hoses so far and probably cac . when i get home this weekend i will make my testing device.
Quick tip, if you find that your cap keeps blowing off as you ad air to the system, its because there is no lip on your cap to prevent it from slipping past the clamp
Intercoolers are 'supposed' to have a certain amount of leakage. The shovel at the boulder hole started smoking. Black. It was an Hitachi 1200. I asked the wrench man if he checked the boost and he said it couldn't be that. They put a pyrometer on it and it read HOT! They thought the gauge was off so sent it off to be checked and it holed a piston. Factory came and put in a new piston and liner and fooled with the injectors. STILL smoked black. I kept after him about the boost with no results. FINALLY found the intercooler was cracked and all the boost was going out there. New intercooler and no smoke. Nobody checks the simple stuff but you!
i wouldn't say there "supposed" to have a certain amount of leakage. but they are "allowed" a certain amount of leakage. there will normally be a spec that says its allowed x number of psi drop over y number of mins at z psi.
Nice nice homemade boost tester...i just subscribe to your channel...I love homemade ideas especially on a job i love doing. I have 2006 d12 Volvo have a couple of issues but eventually i will get them fix. But this idea is great 👍
Thank you for another great video! Do you need to have the engine in top dead center to be able to keep the pressure from going thru the cylinder head?
your not making any boost when stationary the engine needs to be under load before your going to be under boost to have the intake system under pressure.
Great videos. I noticed my 2008 Cat C15 SDP air compressor intake fitting was all wallered out and air and oil was spraying around the engine and I was losing boost pressure. I put a ratchet strap on the fitting to get it home. Question: Instead of trying to retap and put in a pipe fitting or a helicoil or replacing the air compressor I thought taking the head of the compressor and just mig welding around the loose fitting so it don't leak. YOUR THOUGHTS....thanks Matt
Good morning Questiión. I have replace my abs sensors on my freightliner columbia 2009 but the abs light still on where is the abs fuse if there is one ?
Hey I’m having my 2001 e7 460 throw waste gate blink codes under heavy acceleration won’t build boost until 1400 RPM I pulled the turbo off the waist gate was indeed seized so I freed it up. Got it working again put it back on the truck and it’s still throwing the same code and not building boost until 1400 RPM I have not checked for boost leaks yet. Could it just be a bad turbo? How much boost should I be building and at what rpm?
some signs that you might have a boost leak, could be loss of power, low boost under load, black smoke/or excessive black smoke out of the tail pipe, also may hear an audible air leak when under throttle.
An easier way to test for boost leaks is to spray starter fluid on the same areas you sprayed soap on while the engine is running. If there’s a leak your engine will rev higher than at normal idle
That works great checking for vacuum leaks on a gas engine pretty marginal at best in this application. There is no vacuum on a diesel engine would need to be a massive leak before it could be detected that way.
Boost is pressure pushing out. So spraying starter fluid wouldn't do anything cuz it would have to get sucked IN to the engine to do anything. Spraying combustible stuff is checking for Vacuum leaks, NOT Boost leaks.
It totally depends where you hear it. Sometimes there is an air junction at the firewall that is a pain to replace. There might be a troubleshooting video. Other times it is commonly a valve on the bottom of a compressor going bad if you hear it down low under the cab.
Depends on the cam grind. There can be some valve overlap at TDC in-between the exhaust and intake stroke. If it stops when you move a few degrees off TDC I wouldn't worry about it.
@Ezrider359 Hey I misspoke, i was getting a overhead valve adjustment done and the mechanic had all the rockers out because he had to replace the little feet things. We pressure tested the system too and heard pretty good amount of air coning out of the head. He said with all that stuff removed every was in the closed position and there should be no air leaking. He said a valve was sticking open. How serious whould you say that issue is? Thank you so muck for your time, i love your channel.
im in my mid 30's i first started learning how to work on engines around 9-10 years old fixing a brigs and station powered mini bike that i had. by the time i turned 16 i had probably already bought 5-10 cars in non running condition fixed them and then re-sold them. got a job helping a guy that had a shop that specialized in working on air cooled vw's and pretty much turned wrenches ever sense. iv worked on a pretty wide variety of things over the years from small engines to large specialized powered equipment, i would not consider my self a expert in any one field of repair but i have enough general knowledge i can look at a problem and figure out what is wrong and how to fix it pretty quickly.

Love how you keep your videos simple👍👍
Thank you. I really do make an effort to make my videos as short as possible to get the information across
Ouch the most expensive place to have a leak. The cac
really liked your homemade tool ! learning alot ! thanks for sharing

sounds like that would probably work, might be a bit harder to find smaller leaks that way however. thanks for sharing.
Sounds like a quick easy way to check. I have a hissing sound from passenger side when boost goes up... I checked all hoses and cac is next
“Blank” the turbo intake?

@@Ezrider359 I'll go with 'allowed'. Looks like they could do like a radiator and have zero as much as they cost..
I like the homemade tool, I have 12.7 ,,been looking for the leak, I am making the tool now ,, thanks
Thank you, help me out a lot with time and money.
Nice. I am going to try this today, we have an M2 that we can tell is leaking.
Liking your channel mate. Great tips!
Shame this was the expensive leak....

Did the same thing some years ago my inner cooler was leaking too.
Appreciate the information on the little homemade tool very cool it's good of you to do something like that
Thanks for all the video, learn a lot from your video
glad they are helping you out.
Does a low pressure smoke machine work for checking boost leak?
thanks.
Thanks learned something again
Good tool .
Very interesting, thanks
Thanks brother
Thank you for another great video! Do you need to have the engine in top dead center to be able to keep the pressure from going thru the cylinder head?
The compressor should be able to keep up the 30psi even with it escaping
You the best thank you
Awesome job body .
thanks!
Can a leaking charge air cooler be fixed or replacement the way to go?
Well I made my own smoke machine!......works great...but good idea.
Nice
Great video.
Good video thanx
Hey man nice videos.. when i tried to do that all i could hear is air going through my turbo but never built pressure why do you think that is?
Great
Nice brooo😻👍👍🙌
Cool
Can u just leave the engine running and spray it with soap to check for leaks ? Or has to be pressurized
your not making any boost when stationary the engine needs to be under load before your going to be under boost to have the intake system under pressure.
Thks

is that the intercooler bubbling ?
Check the cac for leaks
What's normal boot pressure
Where are you attaching your homemade tool to? I've watched that part of the video a few times and I still can't tell.
Inlet side of the turbo
I just got all the fittings and made this tool, tomorrow I'm going to figure out what's going on with my low boost problems on my C15.
why is it always, where you fear the most...
I just tried this on a dd15. It won't pressurize
How will i know if i even have a boost leak?
some signs that you might have a boost leak, could be loss of power, low boost under load, black smoke/or excessive black smoke out of the tail pipe, also may hear an audible air leak when under throttle.
Can you use a plastic cap instead of brass ($?)
probably, i used brass because i figured it would be better for drilling and taping threads.
Find your leak and wash your motor at the same time.
Thanks!!! that was genius!!

That sucks .. rather find a leak on the blue hose than the intercooler
I can hear air riding down the road any ideas

Put up your windows LOL
I had my system checked while in top dead center and still heard a large leak in the head. How serious could that problem be?
