This is awesome Dan. I've been on the fence about buying a Ryobi mower. I've loved your videos about the experience that you've had with yours and after a lot of reading it seems that battery issues are by far the biggest problem. It doesn't help that they're not available through the channels that Ryobi recommends, so you have to both figure out the problem, and then find the solution. Knowing what the battery is now (a 100aH wheelchair battery) makes it a lot easier to take the plunge. No, I don't want to have to replace batteries, but knowing that I can, and that a replacement is available is a big relief. Thanks again, and thanks to Jack too for the "after" video testing.

Any lead acid battery that meets these (4) requirements will work:
      1) equal Ah - amp hours 2) Deep cycle 3) AGM - absorbed glass mat 4) dimensions that will fit in the battery tray.
If you're not replacing all the batteries then Ah need to match the old batteries. Personally, if I need to change more than one battery or they are 3+ years old I would replace all 4 batteries at the same time. If you replace all 4 batteries all 4 Ah need to match but don't have be the same as the old ones. Higher equals longer run time but if 50 Ah batteries get your yard done it would be cheaper to buy. Just fyi, when you finish you should have some reserve left, 50% is ideal but up to 80% depth of discharge is ok. Deep cycle batteries are made to run down (deep) but running them until they're completely dead week after week would be hard on them.
AGM absorbed glass mat as the name implies, the liquid electrolyte is absorbed and thus it's spill proof. I would say AGM is required if you have hills or very bumpy lawn, and still recommended if flat but you could get away without. There are also gel batteries for the same purpose.

I figured I would watch this after watching your snow plow video. Great to see you quiet that annoying beeper as well as the fluid change. As far as the batteries go, two years in is pretty scary to think about needing replacement considering there are four of them at 250 a pop. Other video's I have watched today mentioned trying to avoid going below 50% of life before recharging to maximize battery lifespan. Also I saw the suggestion for adding a power pulse module and battery saver. But those two combined add another 200$.

Well as we said in this video and the follow up that we did....it's been really the only issue and we think it was defective from the get go....we will be doing continual update videos on it and after we get back from vacation most likely a big one seeing as we have a lot of work waiting for us in our yard.

Have issues with our mower (RY 48110 (099749009) - Ryobi 38" 48V Riding Mower, Rev 01), we are lucky to get 30minutes of cut time currently. I have been researching new batteries. Thought I would share some knowledge. You can use the AH rating number of your battery, and multiply it by 7.25-if you possess a 100 in the A-H, you should be getting around 725 in CCA.

My synopsis is this: perhaps Ryobi doesn't have the best battery management system in there to properly desulfate the batteries and monitor the depth of charge. Oh well. Seeing you change the battery for $250 gives me hope as an electrical engineer who's built an electric snowmobile. My biggest hold-up on these was the ease of maintenance, but you've clearly stepped up and are leading the charge on the common battery issue. I'm all-in on a purchase of one now. Thank you so much!
Although, I will be buying a desulfator ;)

    • @frankjoshum
      @frankjoshum 3 года назад +1

And additionally, like you've said in other comments, $250 for a new battery is a fine cost. Considering the cost of gas, the benefits of electric (quiet!), and how much you'll get out of it (and have already got out of it), I wouldn't be bothered by that cost at all.

    • @frankjoshum

We have another video coming out about how it did but I’ll give you a spoiler it actually works better than it did when we bought it so we are truly thinking that this battery might’ve been defective upon purchase hard to prove but we cut the grass with the blade on for 2.2 hours it’s still at half the battery left on the display but Jack finally got bored and gave up ha ha Ha and that was with the mulching blade on and thick grass because we hadn’t cut it for a while….So for now we are pretty happy with it not thrilled that we had to spend this much after a little over two years but still hopefully it fixes the problem yes people have talked about this di sulfonation we really don’t know much about it and we have friends that are mechanics including Dwayne that was in this video he said he didn’t either I went to the battery place they said they didn’t really know much about it either so wasn’t really confident messing around with any of that stuff however we’ll see what the future holds

Sadly my Ryobi EA190V let me down big time. It broke down twice in the first year and now I'm done with trying to repair it ! It has a Subaru engine that just refuses to start. My mower is not a sit and ride but it is supposed to haul its own weight.. and it worked well for a while but then went bung. I've been given a potential repair bill for it that is well over the cost of a second hand refurbished mower.. so I'm not going to bother ! So sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I've not had a good experience with my Ryobi mower.. and it was not cheap to buy either !! I hope you can resolve your battery problems permanently !! I'm pretty handy with engines but my darn Ryobi is an enigma !!

Sorry to hear that after we fix this issue, we learned a lot and we put those things into play and we haven’t had any issues since we’ve done a couple follow ups since this video and will be doing more to try to help people along the way it definitely has been a letdown for a lot of people, but for other people, they have absolutely loved it and nothing is maintenance free. We definitely learn that but we are happy That we are at a point and have been for quite a few years now where we are using basically no fossil fuels at all between the solar system and everything being battery powered we are definitely moving in the right direction. Our cars are plug-in hybrids so they do still use oil and gas but very very little. Mostly we use the electric from day to day and only have to use a few gallons of gas every few months or if we take a trip Going forward we hope to go fully electric with our vehicles as well and possibly even add more solar panels. If we stay in this house, we will be doing a follow up on the solar system soon too because so many people of asked us to do that and we just haven’t got around to doing it. Good luck to you as always, sir and thank you so much.

@@jackanddan Bless you for your detailed reply my friends ! Yes my mower is petrol based ..so not so good !! It sounds like you are doing everything you can to help the environment which is awesome !! I'm on an electric bike as transport now.. so happy with that unless it is raining ☔ The bike zips along at 25 kph which is more than enough to make a local journey to the shops ! I have an old elctric mower but my property is just too darn big for that.. it would be a whole days work to cut the grass. Therev are solar powered robot mowers here in Poland now that can 'learn' the layout of your plot and cut the grass whilst you are inside the property. Trouble is they cost a fortune !!.. and I am poor !! lol Well at least I am not using the garden shears to cut the lawn !! lol

good day, i also have one of these Ryobi rm480ex mowers, recently i noticed that when placed key to on it flashed 48v then goes to 39.9 volts i have removed all batteries and first check voltage of each all over 13.0 volts. Second placed each battery on a 12v charger, all batteries charged, the tested each battery independently using Ancel BA301 tester all tested good 100% charged. looking for next steps to try. thanks

there are some folks that did videos on this same issue and you can find them on youtube....apparently the cables can have issues and they have replaced them, but this has not happened to us.....yet....

I have a question, what do you use to charge each battery? They seem to be in sleep mode, and I have tried "mini charges". That has not worked. It has sat dormant all winter, I need to know how to jump start each battery, what can I use? I have regular car batteries, and an electric Chevy Spark car. Will either of those work? Thanks for any help you can provide

    • @jackanddan

Not sure why the regular charger won't work....but any type of trickle battery charger should work fine

That main battery disconnect at 1:41, do you know what size Anderson connector that is? I want to build something to tap power off of one when I order my mower. It should have some model number on it or at least an amperage rating. (Probably SB120 or SB175)

I love battery mowers 'and weed eaters, probably will love electric cars. My big concern is battery disposal. I can see this being a huge problem in the future. I've worked at Waste management and have seen the farce that is recycling and fear it will be the same when it comes to battery disposal.

.....learned a lot through this and we always had full power it just wasn't lasting....glad we found a place close and glad it wasn't too expensive....hopefully the new battery will help keep the other ones cool and we are thinking it may have been defective from the start....we have another video coming soon explaining why....sending all these to RYOBI too....we'll see if we get any response....hopefully it helps some folks out....happy fourth!

Checkout redwood materials, exciting they can recycle 97% of the battery to make new batteries.

Lead Acid batteries are highly and easily recycled. (And they are actually recycled because you are paying a deposit on it)

I have the 75 amp hour version of this mower. It's been great. Silly question but, if I replace the 75 amp hour batteries with 100 amp hour batteries I would be updating the mower to the 100 amp hour version, right?

    • @jackanddan

would assume so but not sure if any other upgrades would need to be made....honestly if you call RYOBI's tech support they could probably tell you....like we said in the videos they were pretty helpful but they just didn't have the batteries in stock....we are glad we found our own because they were cheaper and it's still working awesome....we'll continue to do follow ups every months or so for sure. Thanks for watching

I was hoping someone would post a video on battery replacement. Thanks since Im going through this problem. Really upsetting since my its only 8 months old. Ryobi is trying to charge me $1300 to replace batteries. 😞. What i find kinda dumb is that I live in CA and the lawnmower had to be shipped out to Arizona.🤦 so is looking like a 3 month waiting time.

    • @jackanddan

That's crazy....we tested and found that one was bad and replaced it for around $200....we did a follow up video after this you can see if you go to our channel and it actually works better now than when we bought it....we think it may have been problematic from the start....hopefully no more issues but now we know how to do it and where to find it....good luck and sorry you had to do that....that's ridiculous

Yes it is. For battery problems they give you only a year think. The sad part is that i haven't got my baby back yet its almost 4 months now. I called them last week and they said about a week more before they can work on lawnmower that they are waiting on the batteries replacement....😠😠😠

less expensive and since the weight is irrelevant to a rider, they went this route. It is actually very helpful when we plow with it. We have done many videos about this and also a follow up after after this video showing how well the new battery has been working.
