  • And now for something completely different. The Volkswagen Crafter is a large van that competes with the Renault Master and Ford Transit - plus the new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. But is the new Crafter a big leap forward? Tom heads to Auckland, New Zealand, to drive the 2018 Crafter for the first time.
What do you think of the new Crafter? What about us trying our hand at van reviews? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments.

Tom tries his hand at reviewing a large van. Can you lie down in the back? You can. That and other stuff unpacked in this review of Volkswagen's new Crafter.

Something to consider if thinking about buying this van! I've driven this the sprinter and the transit back to back. The crafter is £1000 more expensive than the base model sprinter yet does not come with cruise control as standard though the sprinter does as does the transit. The seat on the crafter also only moves backwards and forwards where the seat on both the transit and sprinter move up and down as well as backwards and forwards, this especially important when driving long distances. The sound system in the base model is also very poor compared to that of the transit though not much worse than the one in the sprinter. The fuel tank capacity is also much less than that of both the sprinter and the transit requiring fuel stops. The steering is nice and light and the motor has plenty of pull on the motorway but if 8t was my money I'd definitely go for either the sprinter of the transit over the crafter as you get a lot more for your money.

People sometimes say. Id watch that channel if they reviewed anything.
In this case, i really did. A good review. And cheers for referencing the history of commercial vehicles!

Thanks, Dave. Thought I'd dip into a bit of commercial vehicles stuff if the opportunity comes up. For me, it's an interesting experience to learn about a product category that I've never had much experience in before. -Tom

Tom Baker reviewing a commercial vehicle..who would have thought😬. Well done Tom..a little out of your comfort zone, but you did good. The only thing missing was the hi-vis vest, obligatory day ware for reviewing tradie trucks👍

Hi-vis would have completed the picture, it's true.

Good review, would appreciate a comparison review in the near future with other competitors like Hyundai, Ford, Renault, Mercedes and etc. It would be an ideal review especially for small business owners and tradies !

    I would ask two things:
    1. What's the price if standard Crafter it means L3H3 in New Zeland?
    2. How long do you have to wait in New Zeland for this car?
    Thank you!

Let’s hope this vw grafter is better built and rust prevention is more considered
The last few models have been a disaster

Well, the last one was a Mercedes-Benz and the new one is a completely original Volkswagen product, so they essentially couldn’t be more different

Chasing Cars I wish both company’s all the best
Sometimes these types of compromises are detrimental instead of beneficial
