Dude! That kick sounds awesome! Position B was my favorite. What’d you do to the audio in terms of processing? It just sounds so punchy, yet balanced, and MAN, is that gate smooth.

Hey - the gate is Slate Trigger 2(gate only, no samples blended in). Mild amount of saturation, slight happy face EQ and an 1176. I'm thinking I went with more of the slow attack/fast release on this one. As time passes by I enjoy position D more and more.

Found this video in search of buying the 902. I'm adding the Kelly shu to my kicks and it'll be "floating" in the middle of the drum. This gives me confidence putting it in position B will give me the sound I will love playing live and recording. Thank you for making the video. Cheers

Top demo bro. Big difference to AKG D112 . Sounds like more low end to my humble ears . God bless

Nice. Liked D the best. Wild idea but have you ever checked E902 on recording acoustic guitar or vocals? Wonder how would be the sound ...

Position C basically sums up live sound engineers who assume that's how a kick drum should be placed and sound.

Lately I'm finding myself just placing the mic on a pillow, inside the kick. Some cringe at that...

The inside the drum positions have more of the resonant sound of the shell's upper harmonics in there. The further out you go the less of that content seems to be there. It sounded good in all positions but I would be choosing to use each of them in different scenarios based on the type of music/band and the situation regarding studio or stage with respect to that musical style or type of band.
I'm not really familiar with the e902 but I have used the e602 a lot over the years and they seem like quite similar sounding mics. Is that your experience of the e902?

The 2 mics are similar. Can't go wrong with either. You can maybe go wrong with the AKG D112 haha

Being really interested in the 902 as a future purchase I have mostly listened to shootouts they are used in. In this case I wish you had it about 1/2" -1" just outside the port to get some action of the reso head in the sound and the full depth of the drum, still getting beater strike. But, that's rather self-serving, being the position I've preferred in recording. I'm not one to place a mic inside the drum because it always delivers an unnatural (to me) papery-type attack in the sound. Also, unless I missed it, what kind of damping did you employ on the drum?

I use an Evans EQ pad - it's leaning on the inside of the beater head. I also have a small amount of foam putting subtle pressure on the reso head from the inside.

Hey thanks man this was great. How did the positions sound without the gate? Just wonder how the 902 went with the back end of the sound?

give me a little more... what do you mean by "back end of the sound"
