    11:06 "I'd even cut out liquor. You know, Margie, you know that 11:12 one kiss and I'll get *shicker."* In Yiddish _shick_ means _drunk;_ while a _shickse_ is a non-Jewish goyl, I mean girl; 11:28 "In some café we'll wine and dine, the whole night through. (Yes, I'm sure we will.) And when we've had our fill, who do you think will pay the bill? Oh, Margie! *Margie, it's you."* This track alone makes this Top 10 a special one. | Btw, it's *O-Hi-O,* to express the salute.

      Henri thank you for the Yiddish interpretations, I was not aware of the meaning. I like that line you mentioned about "who do you think will pay the bill?" It made me laugh when I first heart it. Eddie Cantor was very progressive for his day, wouldn't you agree? 😄

    • @henridelagardere264
      @henridelagardere264 4 года назад +2

      It's a safe bet to say that Jewish and British humour constitute about 90% of what I find genuinely funny. Yes, Mr. Cantor was progressive indeed. It wouldn't be the worst of ideas to feature him and his contemporaries in sort of a Pax41 comedy program.

      How I love these 1921 records

    • @batya7
      @batya7 4 года назад +1

      "I'll get shicker" (or shickered) means "I'll get drunk" (Hebrew, a drunkard = שיכור, not sure of the origin) but I appreciate your little double entendre with shickse, which is Yiddish (שיקסע) and likely comes from the German root meaning fancy, elegant, or chick and is meant with a deprecating, tongue-in-cheek interpretation.

      I love hearing my heritage in a song from 1921!! My family were shtetl-escaping Jews who came through Ellis Island and lived in Brooklyn until the 50s. I wonder if my great-grandmother Esther liked this song

    Yes, these are all acoustic recordings. Electric/microphone didn't arrive till mid 1925. My grandparents were also in their twenties in the 20s. My grandfather had a small band so he knew all these tunes. Was jealous, wish I'd lived then! Have been collecting acoustic records since the late 60s, these are terrific collections with very good transfers. Bravo!

    Chanel No. 5 perfume debuted in 1921. I smelled it for the first time recently. It smelled like these songs sounded. Vintage, classic, from another era. And fantastic. Interesting how the zeitgeist of an era ties disparate art forms together.

    Of course 1921 was technically the first year of the 20's decade and a decade that began with songs like this could only be wonderful! The first two showcase the wonderful talents of both Louis Panico and Henry Busse! All wonderful!

    • @pax41
      @pax41  2 года назад +3

      Yes they did but they are still trying to make claims on them. My new post for 1922 that went live today had 11 copyright claims on it. I disputed them all and sent them the link to the Conrnell University website that details out the copyright laws. I think YT needs to fix their claim system now due to the recent changes in copyright law. Once a claim is disputed on grounds of Public Domain and it is verified, their system should remove it for good to prevent future claims.
