My parents and I used to go to the Lums in Davie, Florida, back when i was a kid in the 1970s.They served one of my childhood favorites , the Ollieburger, and I would order one everytime we went. Back then, Davie had a lot of farmland and the Lums we went to was across the street from a cattle pasture. I can still remember the soft, clinking of the cowbells in the distance when we'd enter or leave the restaurant. it would often be just before sunset, and it was so quiet and peaceful. Funny how some of our most simple memories, can often be some of our best.
Yes I remember that one too, I lived in Broward county back in the 70s when I was a kid. There was one off 441 and Sunrise Blvd too back then. Great hot dogs too.

When I was a kid, there was a tiny little place called Twisty ice cream. They served soft serve cones along with chicken tender baskets or burger combos. They came with the best fries I ever had. Lots of good childhood memories from there. They only had a few picnic tables out front to sit at, but most of the time, we'd just eat in the car. The chocolate and vanilla swirl cone was my favorite to get.🍦😊
Thank you for watching Shannon. That twisty ice cream sounded like a great place and the name is perfect too. I appreciate you sharing some of your memories of going there.
Souplantation was a go-to lunch place during our mid-day split-shift lunch creak at Disneyland (parade department). It was a cheap place to get fed during the 90 minutes we had until we needed to be back for the 2nd parade. The other fast food place in Fast Times at Ridgemont High" was Perry's Pizza. I worked there in the early 80s (their Garden Grove location, not the other location in the movie). It used to be across the street from our high school but it had to move when the strip mall it was in was sold to build condos on. It moved .5 mile away and is still there. Perry sold both locations before he passed, but our owner also sold 15 years ago or so. It's now under an unrelated ownership but still has the name. Most of the menu is the same and it's still a hang out for the local high school.
Myaunt worked at a White Tower back in the 70's. Loved their burgers. She would take care of us whenever we went there. Extra fries, free refills. It makes me sad when I see how many things are gone from my youth. 😢

@@RevLeigh55 Oh really? I was younger, but don't remember one in Anderson. I remember one in Indy. I miss my childhood in Anderson; now it's become such a different place.
72 years old here. I miss Burger Chef, Pizza Hut, the steak chains like York's and Ponderosa. Loved Lum's - roast beef sandwich, onion rings and a big, frosty root beer. So good. A&W, too.
You ought to do one for sit down service restaurants. Here in Dallas I think of places that shut down like Bennigan’s, Steak and Ale, Bonanza, Western Sizzler, and Big Boys.
I have Big Boys and Steak and Ale in a previous video but the others that you mentioned need to be in a future video. Thank you for watching and mentioning them.
As a kid, my family would all go out to eat on Sunday after church. One of the places we would go is Howard Johnson's. I miss it. I always got ice cream.
Here in Columbus OH there were two locations where the buildings are still around, if not the original restaurants. Lum's used to be on the corner of N. High St and Spring St in the Downtown area, but it shut down in I believe the early-mid 1980s and the building was converted to a Kinko's and now is a Fed Ex. A former Burger Chef that used to be on S. High near Dering Ave. in South Columbus has been a used car lot for years now. If you look at the building it's still the same design as the Burger Chef.
It's always fun to see those old buildings and know that they were. My kids don't feel the same way when I point them out though. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us!
Those Big Boys are interesting how they all have different names. Ours here was called Kips Big Boy. Same statue that all the others had. Ours closed out in the early 80s but I sure loved it. I need to make my way to one of the others still open. Thank you for watching and telling me about those!
Oh yeah, we sure do have some in Ohio; here in Dayton (I can walk to it, lol), in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Springfield, etc. Evidently, there are some in Kentucky also. Been awhile since I had a Big Boy and fries, sounds good right about now. Lol.
Always loved that location. The one in Burbank, CA [Bob's Big Boy] is cool, as they have a night where vintage cars show up and park, like a car show. When my mother was in high school in Anderson in the late 50s, they'd cruise through that Big Boy parking lot, go up to Alibi, then back around. The Big Boy manager at the time decided that he'd charge the kids 25 cents to use their parking lot as the turn-around for their cruising, as he didn't like all of the cars driving in and out. The kids changed their cruising habits and cut out Big Boy for a while. Their business took a dive so quickly that this ideas was stopped, and the kids were allowed to keep driving through. Turns out, a good deal of them would stop and buy something! I miss the old Anderson. RIP to the Mounds Mall, Delco Remy, and Guide Lamp UAW Local 663.
We have several Frisch's Big Boy restaurants in my little corner of Ohio. But I remember being on vacation in the 90s (or maybe late 80s) and eating at a Big Boy that was not Frisch's. The menu/recipe was different, so whatever I ordered didn't taste the same.
I remember many of these! Nowadays, we have just a few choices - burgers, chicken or tacos, it seems. That's probably why I go local more often, so it's not a really bad thing.
My first job was at Howard Johnson 's in Ohio. The clam dinners were so good and they gave you alot of clams. Another thing i remember is Indian pudding. It was served warm with whip cream on top.
I liked Bob’s Big Boy. They had liver and onions. We had a restaurant called Bill Johnson’s The Big Apple… it had sawdust on the floor. It was so cool. Till 40 years later they took the sawdust out claiming unsanitary… then it closed down. We had a Bobby Mcgees too. The waiters and waitresses would dress up like characters ( people characters…not fur characters) that was a fun place… We had a lot of good restaurants that are gone. Lunt Ave Marble Club, Eagees ( a sandwich shop) it smelled so good. 🥺
We had both a Burger Chef and aRed Barn where Im from in Youngstown Ohio they both closed around the same time in the late 70s and early 80s and they both got turned into a local Hot dog chain called Jays from here and ran as those into the mid 2000s , now ones a used car lot and the other had a few different businesses in it really miss both Burger places but really really miss Jays hot dogs
BURGER CHEF! My all time fav. Hot N Now, started in Michigan in 1984 as drive thru focused, with a single walk up window, grew to over 100 locations in 15 states. This was my favorite until they unfortunately went out of business, except for a single location in Sturgis, MI. They auctioned off their original drive thru menu board in 2023 when they updated to electronic menu board
I miss the old Sandy's restaurant. Hardees took it over. The fries from McDonald's back in the late '60s were so dang good!! 🍟I miss that old "Googie" (just in case, pronunciation: GOO SHEE), architecture style. Those futuristic designs were classic of the era back then like the original McDonalds. Thanks, Rhett. I'm craving a lot of this food now, hahaha!! 🍟🍔🍕🍗
When I was a kid there was a Lone Ranger restaurant. One of my all time favorites was Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor. Ed Debevic's was a fun place to go to as well. Oddly, our local Farrell's was replaced with an Ed Debevic's.
I haven't heard of a Lone Ranger but did it have the same theme as the show? That sounds like an interesting one. I appreciate you watching and sharing some of your memories.
That's a good one. I ate at Furrs as a wee lad (it was my grandpa's favorite restaurant), and then it got replaced in our area by Luby's, which as far as I know also no longer exists?
I went to TCBY quite a lot during the frozen yogurt craze of the late 80s to early 90s, I would get chocolate flavor and mix in brownie pieces, M&M's or crushed Resse's peanut butter cups
They were good and I used to go to one around the same time in the 1980s. I haven't seen one in a long time but supposedly they are still around. They used to have a lot more locations. Thank you for watching!
I used to love Burger Chef! Hardee's actually bought them out and changed the name to Hardee's; also Burger Chef was the first chain to come out with the bacon cheeseburger; Hardee's was my first job; funny how things come around; they also created the Big Shef; which was 3x bigger than a Big Mac; oh off the subject; Burger King actually cooked burgers over an open flame; and changed it anf added smoke flame flavor; took away the quality and also lowered the cost of their food; Wendy's was like Subway; you order a burger anf they add on what you want, they created it right in front of you, since they change, Wendys prices went down and their quality of food; changed isnt always good.
I remember both Mr. Burger and Tastee-Freez but I have not heard of Mr. Quick until now. Thank you for watching and mentioning some others for us to remember.
I remember Naugles, a Tex-Mex fast food place started by a one-time partner of the founders of Del Taco. They eventually rejoined Del Taco and all remaining locations became Del Taco.
We didn't have most of these, so I don't miss them. What I miss is SusieQ Malt Shop in Rogers, AR that blew away Sunday night during the tornados. I also miss The Old South in Russellville, AR. It burned last year. Plans are for both to be rebuilt. But as long as the Dutch Pantry Amish Buffet in Chouteau, OK stays open, I'm a happy camper!!! Luckily I live a distance away. I would be 700lbs if I lived there because I would eat way too much!!!!😂😂😂🎉❤
A lot of these restaurants don't ring 😕 a bell with me. I ate out at a restaurant called Bill Johnson's Big Apple 🍎, back in 2012, or 2013, in Phoenix, Arizona. It made me kind 😇 of angry that it closed a short time later. Upon finding another Bill Johnson's location, it wasn't open, either. Succulent steak and mouth watering pie 🥧, ya just could not pass this place up. I very easily spent $47.00. I ate there only twice. Once by myself, once with my mom. Eatza Pizza 🍕, however, rings a bell. Jerry's restaurant was another 😋 restaurant to go out of business, also in Phoenix, Arizona. This one is a sound-alike, spelled with a "J". This is the only two forgotten restaurants I can think of for now. Your friend, Jeff.
We had a Lums in our town and the building has been home to many different eating establishments over the years. The last one was Godfathers Pizza. Now it's a crematorium.
I remember Burger Chef. There is a Wings Ole Restaurant here in my town that is in the Burger Chef building. Still has the Burger Chef logo on the door handles.
That is really cool that the logo is still on the door handles. Most places would get rid of that. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us.
@@laureencriss8220In Everett alone there were two or three Herfy's -- one in the very south end of town next to a bowling alley, and another on Broadway near North Junior High School. Us kids liked to hang out at these spots.
Weird that I haven't heard of any of these except Red Barn. Even that was only because there was one of their buildings where I grew up that had been converted in multiple different restaurants over the years. I don't remember it ever being a functioning Red Barn. In fact I only ever knew it was a Red Barn because I saw it in another video (maybe one of yours) and recognized the buildings unique design. It was a Taco Tico when I was a teen.
We used to have a Taco Tico where I lived and I remember liking them. They went out of the area in the early 80s I believe. For the longest time the building kept getting repurposed until they tore it down. They were the only Mexican fast food place with a play ground. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us Brandi!
We still have an All American on Long Island in Massapequa! Long Islanders FLOCK TO IT and it is always the first recommendation to tourists. It wasn't a California thing only.
Kelly's Hamburgers (a local traditional drive-in) got run out of business by McDonald's. But there was a Gino's right across the street (it would become Burger King), and they used to have price wars. McDonald's charged 15 cents for a burger, so Gino's would charge 13 ... and then McDonald's would go to 12. Hard to imagine today.
I like hearing that some places still have one open somewhere ❤
There aren't many on this list but at least there are a couple. They were once part of chains.

72 years old here. I miss Burger Chef, Pizza Hut, the steak chains like York's and Ponderosa. Loved Lum's - roast beef sandwich, onion rings and a big, frosty root beer. So good. A&W, too.
Thank you for watching and sharing some of the ones you miss diannelavoie5385!
I lived in Darlington, SC and had no clue about Yogi Bear chicken 😂😂
!Thank you for watching and letting us know GenXfrom75!
Dad would take us to Burger Chef back in the late sixties. Great memories, love and miss you Dad ❤️
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories of you and your Dad.
Have a bless day everybody 🌄
Thank you for watching and I hope you have a great day as well Delilah!
TGI Friday’s
Mr. Fables was the absolute best. The olive burger and onion rings were incredible! Used to go sometime several times a week.
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories of Mr. Fables!
As a kid, my family would all go out to eat on Sunday after church. One of the places we would go is Howard Johnson's. I miss it. I always got ice cream.
That was sure an iconic one. Thank you for watching and sharing one you mis Dave!
Rhetty, I'll have you know Anderson, Indiana still has a Frisches Big Boy still operating. They even havd "Big Boy" out front.
@@DrumWild, So we had the same stomping grounds so to speak. I lived in Frankton and Elwood.
It has definitely changed a lot and you're right about the choices. Thank you for watching Nicki!
My first job was at Howard Johnson 's in Ohio. The clam dinners were so good and they gave you alot of clams. Another thing i remember is Indian pudding. It was served warm with whip cream on top.
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories of working at Howard Johnsons. That was such an iconic place.
Never ate at any of the restaurants in the video. The one I do miss from my childhood is Bishop's Cafeteria.
The waiters and waitresses would dress up like characters ( people characters…not fur characters) that was a fun place…
We had a lot of good restaurants that are gone. Lunt Ave Marble Club, Eagees ( a sandwich shop) it smelled so good. 🥺
Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories of different places PHBRNTGGR2!
I love Burger Chef and Captain D's when I was young♥️😊
Thank you for watching and sharing a couple you love jackietaylor4196!
Ground Round!
Thank you for watching and sharing one you like veganjym!
Country Kitchen. it was pretty much a staple along Midwestern interstates when I was a kid.
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories of Country Kitchen!
I hope everything is better for you and your family
Thank you. It's going to take a little while but I appreciate your kind words.
What happened????
Burger Chef is the only fast food spot I know of. There were a couple of locations in my hometown.
Thank you for watching and letting us know EinahChild!
Man I remember Howard Johnson's does another restaurant here in Miami Florida it was called Sweden House all you can eat is awesome
Thank you for watching and mentioning another one for us to remember ryulee458!
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories of Burger Chef and Jays.
That would have been cool to have that old menu board. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us!
Thanks Rhetty.
You're welcome and thank you for watching Ron!
In Redondo Beach, I loved Daddy Cools.
Thank you for watching and telling us about that one Russell!
Uh oh! Sorry about making you have a craving. I have not heard of Googie before now. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us Vicki!
Bennigans was our go to full service dinner when I was in college in the late 80's not sure if any of those still exist.
@RhettyforHistory It did. It had photos from the show on the wallz and the outdoor sign was shaped like a giant spur.
I liked Furr's Cafeteria.
Thank you for watching and sharing one you liked WilliamWeicht!
I was thinking the same thing. There was one in Amarillo, tx last time I went but it wasn't anything like the ones I used to go to
That's a good one. I ate at Furrs as a wee lad (it was my grandpa's favorite restaurant), and then it got replaced in our area by Luby's, which as far as I know also no longer exists?
At the beginning of the video there’s a pizza inn . We still have one in Muskogee,Oklahoma
I used to eat at McDowell's Hamburgers in Elmhurst, New York. Located at 8507 Queens Boulevard.
Thank you for watching and sharing one you used to eat at.
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts and memories with us Sense71!
One of my favs from back in the day in the St Louis area was Chuck-A-Burger. I believe there's one left in North St Louis.
That's a fun name. Thank you for watching and sharing one of your favorites.
I liked Howard Johnson’s
We always stopped there when we were traveling. I remember them having pretty good food.
That was definitely a staple while traveling. Thank you for watching grangrampa832!
I remember them having pretty good food
The only one I remember was Red Barn, because my auntie worked there as a teenager.....
Oh nice! Thank you for watching and letting us know where your Auntie worked TopGunAce23!
Sandy's Hamburgers in Tucson, I am pretty sure they were $.15 in the sixties. There was a Scottish lass doing the highland fling on the sign.
Thank you for watching and sharing one you went to moonectar!
I remember a fast food restaurant in NW Ark called Mr. Quik. There was also Mr. Burger and Tastee-Freez.
Mr. Quik had 39¢ burgers in the 80s.
I remember both Mr. Burger and Tastee-Freez but I have not heard of Mr. Quick until now. Thank you for watching and mentioning some others for us to remember.
No shirts No shoes No dice!
Thank you for watching user-sl7bo1em5d!
My mom worked at burger chef before I was born. And BBF
Thank you for watching and telling us where your mom worked zyn87!
Wow. Only one near me was Lums and it was closed before I was old enough to remember it.
Thank you for watching Joe! It's too bad many of us didn't get to try these.
There's a great documentary about Burger Chef I recommend watching.
Thank you for watching and telling us about it GeeEm1313!
Arthur Treachers wa a a great seafood fast food place. ❤
I remember Naugles, a Tex-Mex fast food place started by a one-time partner of the founders of Del Taco. They eventually rejoined Del Taco and all remaining locations became Del Taco.
I didn't know about them. Thank you for watching and mentioning Naugles!
I would be 700lbs if I lived there because I would eat way too much!!!!😂😂😂🎉❤
Thank you for watching and sharing what you went to aariley2!
Roy Rogers was great. I remember that awesome sauce they had , it was like a tangy BBQ sauce.
I really loved that place and I was mad when Arby's bought all of the locations where I was. Thank you for watching Wildbill!
Thanks for letting me know about the Yogi Bear chicken place. I look forward to trying it the next time I'm in SC.
I miss Pizza Inn. They had the best cherry pizza. Oh, and the taco pizza
That really was a great pizza place and there used to be a lot of them all over the place. Thank you for watching!
We had a Lums in our town and the building has been home to many different eating establishments over the years. The last one was Godfathers Pizza. Now it's a crematorium.
Oh wow! They are still cooking up things I guess. Thank you for watching and telling us about that.
What a time to be alive! I hate this world now! So sad what has happened to America!
Thank you for watching Jennifer!
There's still an All American burger restaurant in massapequa NY. A really great place.
Thank you for watching Tamara!
Here in the greater Seattle area Herfy's was a popular burger chain in the 1960s and 1970s. Gone now.
I did not know about that one. Thank you for watching and mentioning it. I'll have to see about getting it in a future episode!
There are 7 left in the area. Quick map search.
Yes--Herfy's! The Wacky Burger Box! There was one really close to me as a girl in the 70s. One of my sisters worked there briefly.
@@laureencriss8220In Everett alone there were two or three Herfy's -- one in the very south end of town next to a bowling alley, and another on Broadway near North Junior High School. Us kids liked to hang out at these spots.
I remember Pizza Haven. Washington State
Weird that I haven't heard of any of these except Red Barn.
It took 42 years for me to learn The All American Burger was an actual business. Fast Times
I used to go to lums in Florida with my parents when I was a little kid
Thank you for watching and sharing where you used to go Edward!
Pizza Inn is awesome, there's still one open near me
Oh nice! I haven't seen one open in a long time. Thank you for watching kelly9094!
We still have an All American on Long Island in Massapequa! Long Islanders FLOCK TO IT and it is always the first recommendation to tourists. It wasn't a California thing only.
Thank you for watching and telling us about that one in Long Island.
That really is. Burger wars were great for consumers. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us Tim!
