- World leaders can't save the planet with a fire hose of fossil fuels - that was the warning from the UN chief Antonio Gutteres to the COP28 summit in Dubai, after scientists said that 2023 was set to be the warmest year in history.

The leaders also heard from King Charles - who urged them to take "genuine transformational action" to curb greenhouse gas transmissions, declaring that the "hope of the world" rested on their decisions.

Unfortunately, many countries (including some of the countries most impacted by climate change) do not accept virtual/online negotiations. Some representatives are from highly vulnerable communities that don’t even have access to stable internet connections. Not everyone there is a president or a king.
But you are right, not this many people really need to be there, and the richest ones could travel by normal commercial flights rather than private jets

Cost of living has already started to get worse because of and will only ramp up due to crop failures near the equator. E.g. spain had massive crop failures so we pay more for food.
The cost of living crisis was directly and mainly caused by reliance on fossil fuels.
