I'm seeing comments on the tone being too metal or there being too much distortion. Personally I like when people who do a cover explores a different tone than what the original was done in. Well done cover. This convinced me to subscribe.

This video is my source of inspiration for my guitar playing right now. Cliffs of Dover is such a good song for guitar but this cover of it demonstrates it with technical perfection while keeping feel. I have been playing for a year and every time i make a guitar cover i always find something more difficult, i thought the full songs eruption, master of puppets,and crazy train were difficult, now im trying to learn this song and this video keeps me aware of whats possible. Once i get hybrid picking down, i cant wait to play this through.

To all those complaining about the tone, the whole point of this cover was to play it in his style. Obviously if he wanted to play it exactly like Eric Johnson he could have. In my opinion it's a bangin cover with a great tone.
Everyone is complaning about the tone...
But changing only tone doesn't make it his style. If that was the plan, he should also play it in a different style (with something different in melody or rythm)

It’s that bell tone and timbre of the single coil guitars that make cliffs of Dover so nice to the ear, this tone is way too saturated it just sounds like a synth playing the song
The studio recording, EJ actually used a 335 for the majority of the song.
Eric Johnson once used a Gibson SG to play this song live.

The playing and composition is excellent but personally not in love with the tone. The lack of reverb/delay and increased distortion lose the more ethereal quality the original track has
EDIT: I'm not saying any tone that isn't like Eric Johnson is bad or that I'm against covers. Just didn't like this tone on this song. Some other tone could work better than the original either possibly

It's like ignoring the thing that makes the song work in the first place. Like covering take five in 4/4.

It's something I've noticed with a lot of folks who have the technicals down beautifully. Especially when you're trying to get a good take, it's too easy to forget what you're playing and become overly focused, ignoring the groove.
