Chad Raush Modern baseball cards are essentially gambling. Awful investment. If you like the cards, or have money to burn, then that’s fine. If you’re looking to make money, not so much.

Nice Aaron, it got me thinking about the correct way to value professionally graded cards - so I thought I would share my method/formula with you guys/gals in the hobby of collecting vintage cards regardless of the sport....
When it comes to graded "vintage" cards (it's a subjective term/idea, I know but I like 1980 or before "the hobby boom") I usually go by the formula explained below... Actually it's more of a "saying" to me, lol...
"A card should have to grade to it's year for the card to be worth it's high BV" and on average that's absolutely TRUE.
So for example: an average raw 1968 Topps Hank Aaron should grade between a 6.5 or 7.0 when it's slabbed for it to be worth 100% book value, and you tack on 20% for each grade above that 6.5 or 7 (lets use 6.5 for sake of argument)... So a PSA 8 Aaron's real value should be worth it's high book ($100.00) x 20% of it's high book value x 3 because a PSA 8 is 3 grades above a 6.5. so it's, so it's roughly valued at 60%/ er .60 higher than the high BV....
I know it sounds confusing or complicated or even poppycock, but you will understand what I'm posting in the next 5 minutes if you can do basic math....
For sake of argument - lets say the 1968 Aaron's high BV is $100.00, and then you send it to PSA for grading and that card comes back slabbed PSA 6.5 - then that card at a PSA 6.5 should be valued at 100% BV or "high book"...However, being a PSA 8 - the card should/will gain 20% of the cards value tacked on per .5 the card goes up a notch in grade..
So an "average" 1968 Aaron should grade to a 6.5, making it's value be high BV
So a PSA 7 Aaron for example should be valued at $120.00 because 20% of $100.00 is..
    A PSA 7.5 should be valued at $144.00 because 20% of $120.00 is $144.00
A PSA 8 should be valued at $173.00 because what is 20% of $144.00?
After that it starts to get complicated
Of course this "rule of thumb" only goes so far, is subjective and applies to cards between 1980 and 1950 and doesn't account for any outside factors which could add or decrease the cards value - such as being an SP vs. a DP, typical issues that particular card faces that are outside of the collectors hands like centering, print spots, typical errors or imperfections caused via manufacturing or demand/popularity etc...
Ever notice how some "vintage" cards seem always to share common traits like being o/c - or have the same printing flaws - then you finally find that one that defeats all odds and doesn't have the "typical flaws" you expect and that card clearly stands out because it's unique but unfortunately the corners are dinged?...... Yea? well not having those "common flaws" is way more valuable than a couple of dinged corners - ten-fold (if they're only dings)...
Remember that too, but I suppose a lot of collectors are used to those imperfections, and in some cases that's why they love the card, lol..
I'm actually "strictly" a hockey card collector but I do enjoy vintage baseball cards, because despite being born in 1980 - vintage cards got me hooked on collecting as a kid because I saw beat corners and nice centering or terrible centering and nice corners - that type of stuff - but you know what? there is nothing you can do about manufacturing flaws - which makes condition flaws less significant than manufacturing flaws.. A card in which 90% are o/c don't bother me if they have a couple miles on them - but it's goofy at times because sometimes they do...
Now I'm just rambling about details, lol.....
Hopefully you understand my grading method and agree with it - if you believe it's a flawed method then let me know why - because I would love a different perspective I have not took into consideration....
