Discipline is when not to play. Wow !
Great concept, many drummers showboat or simply play over the music.
    Thank you Sheila E

I love this explanation of drumming‼️ Control and knowing when to show out and when to let the rhythm breathe really separates good drummers from great drummers👏🏾👏🏾‼️‼️

Sheila E was the shit and she still is to me. I love her. She has that untouchable soul.

  • @AnubisXII

Y'know... I never really gave her a chance. I remember seeing her videos on MTV (a television channel that played music videos back in the 80s) and since I was into Rush and Slayer, not only did I dismiss almost all the music on MTV, I just saw her as a singer standing behind some drums and stuff. Much like the way a singer at the time would use a guitar to have something to dance with. Not to play. Basically, part of their wardrobe.
But then I heard her name recently and discovered that she was indeed, a talented musician.
I wrote Prince off the same way. I had no idea that he was such a great man and a great musician until after he died. Its mind blowing discovering all the talent I basically ignored or avoided by refusing to listen to pop music.

@@watsonira7 Shelia E is..like words cannot express .. I call her the QUEEN OF PERCUSSION and I stand to my words when I said it... we're talking about a woman who is a true PRODIGY... playing drums at 5 years old? That is like whoa......and to come from a family of legendary musicians.. I believe that Shelia E should of gotten her flowers a loonnnng time ago... I appreciate the Latin Grammys given a lifetime achieved award... but she shouldn't had to wait that long... to play for George Duke, Michael Jackson, Confushun, i know the list is longer than that plus to play and create music with Prince.. I honestly respect Prince soo much though because.. Shelia E voice and music was heard through her albums.

    • @najinelson6742

@@melissaleoncreolenola you could also say to work with Sheila E was pure gold for Prince. Before Prince she worked with Herbie Hankook, The Jacksons, George Duke and Stevie Wonder, so Prince was just one more, but a more intense and longer lasting collaboration and relation, of course. Prince was not that goid thanks to talent, he was veey good because he worked harder than most other musicians. That is the secret that actually is no secret

Playing true *Funk*.. those ghost-notes are paramount for the *feel* of the music. Aka "playing with swag." Done right--- and listeners cannot control themselves when they're moving bodies.. head and feet. They're under the control of the music. Sheila's example of James Brown's drummer hit the nail on the head.

The term "ghost note" came from drum corps when heavy lines like Boston Crusaders would play flam patterns but not hit the tap or accent and only play the grace notes as a psych to the drum judge. The correct term should be GRACE notes because that is what they are.

    • @edgarvanoostrum8450

Ghost notes serve a rhythmic function; they are played to add spice to a groove. Grace notes serve a melodic function; they add spice to a melody.
