  • If you are struggling to play on larger tip openings, this video will teach you a trick I used that helped me move from a size 5 tip to a size 7*.
The first setup was an Otto link STM 5 with a vandoren v16 strength 3
The second one was a D'addario select jazz d7M with a vandoren v16 strength 2.5

That is quite a situation. Choosing between a smaller mouthpiece. It is as common as metal versus hard rubber. I think it is about the player’s comfort level.

Yup, although I think with enough practice a player would be able to adapt to any well made mouthpiece. Good metal mouthpieces are hard to make and really expensive, so I'd recommend hard rubber

Almost. If you go over to the Earspam channel he shows an exercise to strengthen one's emboucher. Also find the Phil Barron paper on tone improvement. That should get you the rest of the way. Good luck!

My problem with bigger tip opening is the intonation :(

I will try this today .I use yanagisawa 8 ebonite with my soprano .it is really hard to keep the tone in tune with large opening mouthpieces.by the way I remembered Branford Marsalis has a strange embochure .can it be a double lip embochure?

Have you a method for developing subtone playing ability? I can play softly and very softly but am not able to incorporate the breath or air sounds so essential for the subtone sound.

For a Double Lip embouchure, and it is really great you are using one, as you are not following the herd of military trained biters, do not pull your lips back, just keep your lips completely natural, but keep your teeth away from mouthpiece. It should not be hard or at all uncomfortable to use double lip, and your sense that it is hard is caused by pulling your lips back too much, but if you persist you will develop uncanny power to slur and bend notes. Good work, thanks

I tried doing it that way, but without pulling my top lip back I can't keep the mouthpiece stable in my mouth. If I'm sitting down and not moving this could work, but if performing it's not ideal

@@forrestlin6924 You must persist with a natural hold, no matter how unstable you feel it. Placing teeth gives no stability, just an illusion of it. Placing teeth is like using crutches when you do not have a broken leg - your leg loses muscle. Placing teeth effectively freezes you. An exercise you can use is to slur Octaves not using Octave Key, start with Low D slurring to Middle D and back, use Octave Key to begin with. You will find progressively that you don't need it. But, 💯 per cent you must keep your lips as natural as sucking an ice lolly. I promise you this will work, and you will develop an embouchure capable of playing pieces which the biters cannot cope with. That it feels unstable to begin, don't worry, it will work surprisingly quickly if you keep faithful to a natural lip technique

I switched from a 4c mouthpiece to a 6 opening and all I'm getting is constant squeaks it's very frustrating I can't even get a note on just the mouthpiece

Check and see if the rails are even. That could make it more difficult to adjust to the piece.

To me the Link sounded brighter, but not as big as the D' Addario.
