  • In this video, we take a look at the LT Wright GNS Bushcraft knife. I have had the knife for around a year now and have loved every minute of using it. So in the video I test out the O1 tool steel with a bit of battening, make a couple feathers and carve out a few useful notches.
    I purchased my "GNS" from The Bushcraft Store here in the UK. But LT is known for his custom work too, so if that is more your thing then check out his website: www.ltwrightkni...
    Thanks for Watching........ Mark.

    This is just my opinion , of all the LT Wright knives I own the GNS is the best all around knife I own. The handle is very comfortable and the blade size and style is perfect , the AEB-L version is really nice . The GNS is the perfect outdoor knife as well as a great EDC self defense knife .

      Hi Mark, many thanks for watching and taking the time comment. Yeah the GNS is my favourite out the LT's that I own. The GNS is an awesome knife too, but I get more out of the GNS blade shape. When I bought mine you could only get it in 01 tool steel, so I haven't had a chance to try the AEB-L steel. Everyone seems to like it though :) Thanks again for watching Mark, all the best Mark :)

      Hi my friend, I hope you have been keeping well. I have a couple that I tend to use most, and they are the LT Wright Genesis and a Ben Orford Woodlander classic. If I had to chose between the two, I would opt for the Genesis as the A2 steel is more forgiving in damp climates. Plus the handle scales are micarta, again which I prefer in damp conditions or when working around the lakes at work. I hope this helps, all the best, Mark :)

      Hi Greek Veteran, I hope you are keeping well my friend. You could buy a decent knife for the 200-250 euros. I like the knives the LT Wright makes. I have a couple which I have been very please with. My go to knife lately has been the Genesis. I like the blade shape and with it been made from A2 steel, it doesn't need much looking after. We tend to get a lot of rain and damp weather here so it seems more practical for me. The GNS is also a lovely knife. The o1 steel is easy to work with and the handle shape is very comfortable. Another knife maker that I like to use is from the UK and that is Ben Orford. I have one of his Woodlander classic knives that he makes. It is a great all round knife. You can choose the steel and handle materials etc and budget it in with the amount of money you have to spend. I will leave you a link to his site for somewhere to look. I hope this helps, all the best, Mark. benandloisorford.com/store/

    Great video, Mark! I've had my eye on this knife for a while. I like the woodlore-style blade on the GNS, but the handle makes me a little hesitant. Does the butt of the knife ever get in your way when you're using various grips? The handle design seems to be optimized for a single grip style, which makes me worry that it will feel awkward any time I'm using the knife outside of that specific grip. What are your thought on this?

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  6 лет назад +3

      Hi Ryan, I hope you are well. Yeah the GNS is a great knife. I've been very happy with it over the time I have had it. No I don't really have any issues with the handle size or shape. In fact it is one of the most comfortable I own :) I have a smallish hand and I would say the butt of the handle sticks out about 1". I haven't ever notice it catching on anything or getting in the way when using the knife in another type of grip. I understand what you mean about the handle shape looking like it will only suit one grip comfortably but it works with all grips. The best thing is try and hold one before you buy. That way you can see if it suits your hand and style. I hope this helps, all the best, Mark. :)

    Great review friend🙂 I am thinking about getting one in AEB-L with the convex grind. I live in coastal marsh. I have the Genesis in A2. Which handle would you say is more comfortable? Also what did you treat your sheath with? It looks great

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  6 лет назад +1

      Hi spider5001, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I treat the sheath with Ballistol universal oil when I'm camping and away from home, but from time to time I give it a coat of golden mink oil. I like both handle shapes really. I like contoured handles like the bushcraft black and a couple more knives that I use. But for an all round handle, the Genesis seems to suit everyone who has used mine. If you can, it would be worth trying one if you can prior to buying. I just went for it and it felt fine. Thanks again, all the best, Mark.

      Mark Bailey I just ordered some ballistol and tormek polishing compound.🙂

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  6 лет назад

      Hi Spider..... you won't be disappointed my friend. Both excellent products and they last for a long time. You may already know, but ballistol is also good on a strop. Especially if you use tormek on it. It seems to dry the leather out, and the ballistol replenishes it again. Have a great weekend, all the best, Mark.

    • @spider5001
      @spider5001 6 лет назад

      Mark Bailey I use the inside unfinished leather of a belt. Should I get a small piece of smooth finished leather? Were you really able to keep your edge on the genesis by just stropping? I've had mine 4 months and have already had to take it to a fine stone to get that razor edge back

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Spider, Yeah, I have been lucky that it hasn't needed to go on a stone yet. I tend to strop the knife every time I get back home, or in the evening in camp if I am away for a night or two. The only time I tend to use a stone is to take chips or rolls out. But I have never had any of those problems with the either of LT's knives as yet- ( I will probably chip the edge now lol). The compound that you use makes a big difference too. I have used all different types, grit ratios, colours etc, but the Tormek is probably the best in my opinion. Once your knife is sharp, the Tormek keeps the edge really sharp. One thing that I am mindful of, is if you only strop the blade, the it can make the grind more of a convex, as the leather compresses and the knife takes on that rounder shape. So with s couple of Mora's that I use, especially the bushcraft black, I tend to find that I have to put that on a stone every now and again, to flatten the grind back to a scandi. It is all personal taste of course. Sorry for babbling on.... all the best, Mark.

    Very good review of the gns i recently got two of them one in saber grind an the other scandi grind.couldn't tell but did u leave the secondary on it or take it off?

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  6 лет назад +1

      Hi, yeah the GNS is a great knife. I was looking a the saber grind too, but went with the scandi in the end. No, it doesn't have the secondary bevel on it anymore. I didn't remove it for any particular reason. It went after the first time I sharpened it and I didn't put it back on. I like to sharpen them flat on the stone and then strop them. Thanks again, Mark. :)

  • @paulie4x1
    @paulie4x1 7 лет назад +1

    Say Heah, I just bought my GNS, But I got mine in 3V, Yeah, its still my Bush Craft Knife, I also got the Coyote Black Mountain Handle and its Simply TiTs , Beautiful, a lovely piece of kit. I have a Skookum Bush Tool and I don't think there's anything on the market that cab out carve it, Slices like a dream with the continues curve I have in it, its also in 3V. I also have a vintage Blind Horse Bushcrafter, That's why I took some time to order my GNS. Yeah, its in the O1 and a Scandi. But the straighter edge I find it works wood great, But its just a little too short if a blade for me for a all around wood working knife, But a flatter efge does form wood easy so working wood is great with it. I also have a Jihn Bradley "Worlds Finest Camp Knife, It just that. John made me mine in Ironwood and its a piece of art, Pretty is a underatatement. John Austempered the 52100 and he's a master temper guy, I mean a master at tempering steel, He made that knife with the thinnest apex I've seen on a knife and it doesn't chip or roll. but really cuts. So you see why it took me so long to get my GNS. But putting all that together, I understood why the Ray Mears Woodlore was such a knife in demand, The pointy tip carved small curls with authority, so you have control cutting close to the tip as well as anywhere along the blade, Yup, forming wood is where it shines, so natch I wanted one, But some of the older and vintage realized a high price, and the waiting for a new one is nearly too long to wait and the original guy that made Ray Mears died. But that info and idea what I wanted was burnt in my memory. So when I found out the GNS was available in 3V, I knew that was the sign. But I wanted a White G-10 and none could be found, until I found the Coyote Black Mountain G-10, a real handsome knife. So I bought it. But before I bought my GNS, I ordered a Ka-Bsr Limited Edition BK-29 Moses Bowie, It also came with two other knives, A BK-5 and the Snody SnakeCharmer. That's a nice little neck knife in the S35Vn Stainless, Who would of known it would be the neck knife for my new trio. I already had the 2Hawks Warbeast Tomahawk and the Wicked Tough Saw. so a new trio was born. The 1st Ka-Bar Limited Edition also came with two knives a BK-4 and the BK-5. So now I have (3) BK-5's, but that's Ok, they will be collector knives because their discontinued and as far as I'm concerned are as good as the BK-7. but its a 8" blade and a trailing point so its a slicer. But I could baton it as good as the BK-7, and its lite. So yeah, I had a good day buying some good knives, Both Bowies Dwarf the BK-9, and the BK-29 Moses has a stronger tip and is only a 1/4" shorter than my BK-20 Bundok Bowie, So yeah, I prolly could add one of the Bowies as a team-up with my GNS, if I want. But I think only in colder weather when I would use a different Axe and saw to process alot of wood to stay warm, But right now, Its my GNS, my Tonahawk, and my Wicked Tough Saw Combo and my Snody as my neck knife, What a neat lo@@king neck knife.,,.

    I hate seeing people abuse a good knife by beating it with a club. It's a silly, amateurish thing to do, and always mean the person doesn't take along the right tools, and learned everything he knows from RUclips.
    That aside, it's a knife that's exactly life at least a hundred other knives in look, feel, and design. As for O1 tool steel, it's just the latest gimmick. Both O1 and O2 were tried as knife blades years ago, and failed miserably. O1 is very difficult to sharpen in the field unless you have a good sharpener with you, which is not what it means to be easy to sharpen in the field. Being easy to sharpen in the field means being able to sharpen a knife easily, even if you have no sharpener at all with you. O1 has very high abrasion resistance, and that's the last thing you should want on a field knife, at least when it's this high. Knife buyers all over the country are sending knives made of O1 back to the companies for sharpening, or finding a local professional who can do the job. It's reminiscent of the D2 craze where everyone praised the steel, but almost no one could sharpen it at home.
    Despite its high abrasion resistance, O1 is not much harder than good 1095 CV, but it's a lot more brittle on the micro level, which is also something you shouldn't want. O2 is even worse, but I predict it will surpass O1 in knife steel before too much time goes by, simply because it sounds like an advance, and people who really don't know much about steel, or knives, always think harder is better, which simply isn't true. There's a point with high carbon steel, somewhere around 58-60 Rockwell, that additional hardness becomes more of a liability than an asset, regardless of the kind of high carbon steel it is,. The same thing happens with stainless steel at around 63-65 Rockwell.
    As for the grinds, so? They're all standard grinds, and nothing has changed except the O1 steel, which actually makes some of these grinds almost unusable because of high maintenance requirements.
    But what I really don't understand is how many praise the design of a knife that's no different than darned near every other knife out there, but that costs far more, even when the same steel is used. The design isn't even original with LT Wright, so it's not like others are copying the design. This exact design has been around for more than a hundred and fifty years now, and has never been out of production.
    If ever any product sold strictly because of the name attached to it, that product is the knife. Knives of this exact design, using the same steel, can sell for as little as fifty dollars, to a high of a thousand dollars, and the difference in price is solely about the name attached. In many cases, knife buyers can't tell one from another without reading the name, or identifying something like handle color or liner color.

      Absolutely not true. Mors Kochanski himself batons with a knife to this day. It's an entirely viable method of maximizing the utility of a well-made knife. If you knife cannot withstand this kind of task, it is not wortyh as a bush knife. Period!
