FYI, In Sri Lanka’s history, the Portuguese arrived in 1505 and established a fort in Colombo with the approval of the Sinhalese King. However, their control remained limited to a few coastal forts. The Dutch followed suit, engaging in conflicts with the local Sinhalese kings throughout. Despite their efforts, neither the Portuguese nor the Dutch fully colonized Sri Lanka. It was the British who eventually gained prominence, leading to the surrender of the Sinhalese kings in 1815.
Thanks for this more precise historical content. 👍. It's interesting that the same seemed to happen with the Portuguese throughout Asia. They were only interested in sea trade and never ventured further inland compared to the other colonial powers whose aim was to control everything. We appreciate your input. 👍😊
@@FrugalTravellers You’re welcome! I hope you two have a fantastic time there. We appreciate your captivating content, and thank you. Actually, both the Portuguese and the Dutch made determined efforts to conquer the island, but they were thwarted by the valiant kings who resisted the superpowers of their time. Notably, the Portuguese faced their first and humiliating defeat in Asia Sri Lanka. The island’s rich history is chronicled in the Mahawansa, a record that has been written for over 2000 years, containing a wealth of fascinating facts.
Your explanation is amazing. Also I could learn about Sri Lanka's history. I really love watching your contents . Hope you have a wonderful time in Sri Lanka.
Back in early 2000 and before 2000 when we visit Galle Fort It takes half a day to explore Galle Fort. Swimming next to the fort is also fun. Now that I am living outside of Sri Lanka last time I only had 3 hours to explore Galle Fort. I love my childhood memories.
How wonderful you have those childhood memories of Galle fort. It is a beautiful place. We spent a full day there and really enjoyed it. Thanks for watching. 🙏😍

If it were up to me I'd give you another thumbs up every time I see some new place I must visit - Thanks for all your videos...its my time away from our travels - soon to be on the road again.
Thank you M&L for your Galle Fort video. I recall the fort and shoreline areas very well. I wish we have more time to visit the historic center…our visit was fairly brief. 😢 I didn’t recall Mandy had such a sweet tooth. 🍨🍬 Looking forward to more videos from 🇱🇰. Cheers. 👋🏻
Hi Lucchesse. 👋 It's a very impressive place alright. I think a lot of people just pass through for a quick look here. It definitely deserves some time to just wander the backstreets and soak it all in. 👍 It's a shame the accommodation is so expensive inside the walls but it's possible to stay just outside for a reasonable price. 👍 Plenty more videos to come. ❤️🇱🇰😁
Hi M&L, What an interesting place to visit. As previously mentioned for Colombo, Galle is also packed with different colonial (PT, NL, UK) constructions. Some are well kept, some less. I can easily see the potential of renovating the neglected ones for travel accommodation. Sri Lanka seems to hava such potential for tourism. Taking in account how affordable the food is, it looks pretty decent & probably tasty too (for the price). Hope you're doing OK, catch u guys later 🙋🏻♂️
Hi Sergio, We're really well, thanks 🙏 The Galle fort area really is a diamond and will only get more developed as tourism grows. 👍. Fortunately it's very tasteful and the historic atmosphere remains thankfully due to the UNESCO status. It's a real pleasure to walk around. Feels like a living museum. ❤️ Glad you enjoyed this. Have a wonderful weekend. 🙏😁

That's such a great question! I'm happy to report we didn't have one single dodgy stomach the whole 7 weeks we spent travelling around Sri Lanka, and we ate so much delicious street food 😋 🤗🇱🇰♥️
Hi Nisar. Which one is peddlers street? Is that in Colombo? We may have missed it. If so, let us know and we'll go the next time we visit this amazing country. 👍🙏❤️
Locas do not eat while walking or hardly eat on roads, if you eat or drink at the place where you bought there's always rubbish bins or leave left overs, boutique or hotel owners will dispose rubbish. Majority locals take their food and rubbish home . We Sri Lankan s always teach children not to throw rubbish all over but to take home or respective places where you eat or perches food and all stuff. 😂 Also there's no entrance fees or any charges for these historical places. So many local families live inside fort. Municipal council have a proper system to collect garbage from each and every house hold and business establishment s. Also keeping the environment clean.
Thank you for sharing this information. The day we went there was so much rubbish on the ground by the cliff divers, and the few rubbish bins were overflowing, with more rubbish dumped beside them. It was such a shame as it turned a beautiful place into an eyesore. ~ Mandy
half my dutch and English relatives were married at tether the dutch reformed church or the methodist church in Galle. Surnames are Anthonisz, De Vos and Lorenz
Just out of curiosity, how much did you budget for the 2 if you for your whole time in Sri Lanka, I'm headed to Galle in a week. Also where did you find the cheap local restaurants? The internet doesn't give much info on them
Hello, and thank you for the great questions! Our daily budget is US$25 each per day, but in Sri Lanka we ended up spending US$11 each per day as only ate at local places, stayed in budget accommodation, and travelled on public transport. Re: local restaurants, we didn't search for any online... instead we'd wander around to find places that were full of locals, and would eat there. We always check prices in advance, and I'm happy to say that we didn't have any stomach issues the whole 7 weeks we were in Sri Lanka. We hope you have an awesome time in this amazing country 🇱🇰♥️
Is that so? I'm aware that in Japan they removed the bins due to the 1995 terrorist attack but what about Sri Lanka? Did they have similar attacks during the civil war? 🤔
We did see some rubbish bins in Galle, by where the cliff divers are, but unfortunately they were completely full and had loads more rubbish around them. Galle is so lovely, so it was quite disappointing to see overflowing rubbish bins.
We hope you enjoyed this video as much as we enjoyed travelling in Sri Lanka! 😍 Here's the link to our entire Sri Lanka series, and there will be many more videos to come from this amazing country!! ❤🇱🇰
