- Great moment from The Affairs of Dobie Gillis, the 1953 movie. While the movie is pleasant, it is raised to more memorable heights by three or four great song and dance numbers by it's talented stars, including this one. Bob Fosse is in the sweater and has the light socks. Barbara Ruick sings.
Bob Fosse gives 120%. No wonder he expected so much of his dancers. This clip makes it clear that Bob Fosse was a fabulous dancer - before he became a legendary choreographer. A valuable piece of dance history.
Always interesting to see the master of choreography dance . I wonder who choreographed this and I hope he gave him as hard a time as the dancers he choreographed .
Hello Eileen, How are you doing?
According to IMDB, the choreographer was Alex Romero. Check out the work of the other male dancer, Bobby Van. Superb.
Check him out, along with Bobby Van in the movie, "Kiss Me Kate." Grate songs and dances.
Excellent observation and comments ⭐️ he's an idol. My brother worked on Bdway w him on his last show, Big Deal. I was in his presence a few mins. A thrill. He died about a yr later 😢
I love the way Bobby Van never looks like he’s dancing. He just moves in time with the music! It’s amazing!
He had a genius Choreographer
They love putting him and Fosse together. They were in two other films: Kiss Me Kate and My Sister Eileen!
Early Fosse. Still incredibly idiomatic. Off-beats, unconventional movements. His style is so defined and identifiable throughout his career. One of the greatest choreographers of the 20th century.
Left out dancers!
@@cynthiacook1646 Wish he'd danced in a lot more musicals, brilliant
好萊塢舞蹈人才也❣️
That's all fine and dandy except for one thing: it ain't his choreography in this movie.
Bob Fosse was the best showman of his generation. Plus, like all the great ones, he made the superhuman look effortless.
Oh his and all they came after his gen hello
Wow the extension on Bob’s moves. I was born in 1953 and watching these movies always entertained my young eyes. Bobby Van too! The good old days.
EXACTLY. Fosse's extensions...! sort of like the way Jim Carrey moves when doing comedy.
Hi! I say ditto to all you just said( born May1953). I was privileged to see many insanely great musicals on TV, and live at our Regional Theatre in Woodland Hills, CA. Great times.
Bobby Van and Bob Fosse also in 'Kiss Me Kate! Wow!
@@jillianclark4076 I lived in the Valley from ‘78 to ‘84.
Bob Fosse throws so much energy and heart into every move. But Bobby Van just makes it all look..... so easy! That's a true gift.
So true on both accounts. I think this is the first time I've ever seen Bob Fosse dance and he's incredible. You can see where his signature moves are going to be developed with his choreography.
And I've always loved Bobby Van movies. Like you said he's a great dancer and he just makes it look easy-peasie as they used to say in the day LOL
First time I saw Bobby Van was in "The Lost Horizon." Love Burt Bacharach's music!!!
Bob danced with every single molecule. His moves as a dancer were glorious. While it’s sad Hollywood had no idea what to do with him as a performer, their lack of vision gave Broadway and Hollywood a brilliant, iconic choreographer and director.
What a thrill it is to see this, almost 70 years later. 70 YEARS! And it still seems as fresh and modern as yesterday. :)
It truly IS AMAZING that we get to watch this almost 70 years later! How lucky are we!!! And the quality is impeccable.
What movie was this in?

I love watching the very talented Barbara Ruick. She later married the fab composer John Williams, and sadly, died quite young. Thanks for sharing this clip, which was new to me.
Yeah, I hadn’t realize that her son was the lead singer of Toto.
Thank goodness for RUclips. These clips are our musical history and legacy.
Absolutely wonderful!! And Bobby Van was an underrated dancer/actor too.
Fantastic I love watching the old movies with everyone singing and dancing 🥰 I miss you Debbie ❤️
Holy crap, I never realized Bobby Van was such great dancer! I knew him as a bit actor and game show host in the 70s. His dancing is superb and he made it look effortless. RIP, Bobby.
LOL - yes, that's how I knew Bobby Van too. He had been on a game show called The Party Game - he was very funny on that show
Not surprisingly, Bob Fosse was the best of all possible Fosse dancers. Somehow he stylizes the gestures like no one else could.
Van was one hell of a hoofer..to even keep up with
Fosse!
Fosse always digs in deeper, fans out wider, every single movement is EXTRA and that's what makes it Fabulous.
This one was amazing. I have seen his choreography but not much of him dancing. Wow.
Completely true, every bit of his body is engaged in the dance, and there is something about how small his feet are that made him seem more ethereal. The amazing Bobby Van was dwarfed by Bob's talent in this scene, and the girls might as well not have been there.
@@coreycox2345 you should watch him dance with Tommy Rall in my sister Eileen! He's AMAZING 😍
You hit it! Deeper !
Fosse was way ahead of his time ...❤️❤️❤️
There may one day be a phenomenon as incandescently talented and supercharged as Bob Fosse, but they've yet to appear.
truth! Bob Fosse created a whole new style of dance that is still done now, on Broadway and dance theater shows, musicals.
Michael Jackson in the same league
@@meman6964not even close
@@meman6964 ??? So not.
He is phenomenal!
Great clip. Musical dance gems with Fosse, Gene Kelly, Astair... reminds me of my childhood when l thought grown-ups could just dance and sing when ever they wanted.
I love these old musicals - so much incredible talent. Ah, never see the likes of this again.
It's always magical to watch Bob Fosse dance. Later, his choreography was the best! You always know when it's a Bobby Fosse number.
His style was very much like Fred Astaire but he was ahead of his time. He always seemed to appear to enjoy his dancing and other dancers because he smiles.
You certainly do know when it's Bob Fosse choreography
😮nobody did Fosses like Fosse. Smooth as silk.
Bob Fosse was such an incredible dancer...
sublimelyh70 did you notice how the white cuffs and white socks tended to draw your eyes to Fosse’s hands and feet emphasizing his movements (and yes he was fantastic)
And he enjoyed dancing so much, by the look of him
...and choreographer!
Bobby Van & Debbie are incredible!!❤❤
Wow, Bob Fossie was really something. Very handsome too. Recently I have discovered, through UTUBE, from 1958 movie Damn Yankees, Bob with wife Gwen Verdon, a fantastic dance number I watch every day. Who's got the Mombo, Pain. Their dancing so insinc with each other. It's amazing to watch. I never knew they were married. I always liked Gwen Verdon, never realized what a great dancer she was. Saw the Damn Yankees movies when it came out, I was just child then. They are Truly Missed, along with Jane Powell, who passed Recently, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, a favorite of mine, so was Jane Powell. I really miss the great MGM musicals, and other movie company Musicals, along with all the wonderful talented actors, actresses, Singers, dancers from that wonderful movie Era!!!❤❤💔
Are you able to get Turner Classic Movies (TCM)? I'm from Southern Ontario and we get it Bell. We have another TV provider called Cogeco and I found out recently that they don't carry TCM because Bell has an exclusive on it in our area.
If you love those movies then you need to get TCM. Hopefully, wherever you are living, it is available.
So, how come we don't have a television channel called The Musicals???????
Debbie adorable, always my childhood fav, bless her.
Lots of praise for Fosse in the comments but I couldn’t keep my eyes off of Bobby Van dancing. He is smooth. And he seems to glide and float with no effort. I see the effort in Fosse’s dancing.
Because he only makes it halfway though any of the movements. But he had more "star" quality than Fosse, who was a great dancer, but still just a dancer.
His body type , size, and looser clothing might camouflage some of his efforts, making his dancing seem effortless. Just a ?
Bob Fosse looks so sweet-faced and innocent in this. Kinda hard reconcile this with his depiction of himself in All That Jazz.
Yep, Fosse was two different people on/off screen. This was well know amongst those who knew and worked with him.
ktmggg, that's exactly what I thought when I saw him in "Kiss Me Kate" (1953).
I saw a couple of interviews with him, and those kind of tempered my opinion of him. He certainly had flaws but he also was a kind of wounded person, you know? In the whole history of addiction, I don’t think there has been anyone who had fallen into that trap, but who had a healthy self esteem.
And he’s got hair! ;p
@@maggiegarber246 Makes sense when you think about it. If you feel comfortable in your skin, you don’t crave numbness, sedation, artificial stimulation, oblivion. If reality isn’t painful, you don’t seek chemical escape. To me this seems like a much more productive approach to addiction than creating an identity as an addict...
Now Bobby Van did show that he seems to movie with the music. Timing and and smoothness.
Wow, Barbara Ruick was so beautiful and talented, and what a figure! That impossibly tiny waist... Sad she and Bobby Van died so young.
I just adore Debbie Reynolds!
Love Debbie and Bobby Van. But, Bob Fosse...dancing...can you EVER get enough?
One word Fosse genius period
Lots of talented artists in that scene !!!
fosse is so unmistakably fantastic!!!
Fosse had so much energy. Its amazing to watch him.
Fosse already got some of his signature styles in his young age. It is really different and distinct, to this day, still recognizable whenever someone borrows it.
Kiss Me Kate.
I love the hoofing but Van is sooo lucky dancing with Debbie Reynolds. She is sooo pretty and holds her own dancing.
Well, she was trained by Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor amongst others . . .
Her friends thought he married her to boost his career. I guess it seemed to have played itself out that way.
Barbara Ruick was married to composer John Williams till her death. Their son is the lead singer of Toto.
What the what?!? Really - I love Toto and I never knew that. Thank you for mentioning this.
Man I absolutely love watching this!!! It’s fun isn’t it?
I had no Idea Bobby Van was so good. Keeping up with Fosse I did not expect.
What a cool routine.
Bob Fosse jako młodzieniec. Stał się geniuszem nowoczesnych przedstawień muzycznych, gdzie był perfekcyjny taniec, choreografia i muzyka. Kocham to co stworzył i jego samego.
Bob Fosse jako młodzieniec -- for a second I thought someone was saying his last name was "Fosse jako młodzieniec."
This is a slice of history that can never get dated. Notice the intricate footwork on the limited piano top space. It's simply incredible. While I truly love Debbie with all my heart , my Lisa Gaye still holds the top slot of my heart and, in my opinion, the two best dancers that ever graced the screen in Hollywood were and will always be Tommy Rall and Vera Ellen; both incomparable!!!
Star power is a funny thing. It's interesting how appealing both Bobby Van and Debbie Reynolds are in every way. Bob Fosse was the better dancer and Barbara Ruick was the better singer and this song was clearly their moment, but you still can't help but watch the other two even before they join the number.
Yes I agree!
Fosse put everything into dancing, and there wasn't much left for anything else. He wanted to be the MC in his own production of Cabaret the film, but the producer wanted Joel Grey instead. It was actually a good call. Fosse could do it all but his dancing spoke louder than anything else on screen. You can see that in the Snake in the Grass dance from The Little Prince--it's wonderful but I don't think he could carry a whole film as a leading man or central character.
Smooth and they make dancing look like so much fun!
Yes love Bobby Van. And Debbie. She danced up a storm in Singing in the Rain too
Such a talented quartet.Debbie was barely 20 but was the equal of the guys.Only Debbie had a successful movie career .Barbara and Bobby Van died far too young.Fosse was a Broadway legend but a troubled guy. These lesser known MGM musicals need to be widely available
Debbie also more than held her own with Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor in Singin’ in the Rain. She was just a powerhouse dancer in a petite package!
We absolutely need a Musicals Channel.
Fosse wrote, directed, and choreographed movies like Cabaret and Sweet Charity.
Fosse was extremely successful across stage and screen.
Even Debbie admitted she was outclassed. She drove them nuts on the set of SitR because she needed so much rehearsal
Back in the days when dancers DANCED!!! Not the roll around on the floor, lift one leg in the air, pretend like they're going through so much angst routine performed by EVERY kid that went to dancing school today
Fosse has that extra something in the way he moves compared to the others . Like Fred Astaire.
Much like Fred
He idolized Astaire.
I don't think he's like Fred at all. Fred has an effortless, fluid, gliding, floating quality. Fosse has a "larger than life," phrenetic, "big" quality that is totally different.
I love how beauty contest winner Debbie Reynolds holds her own with these seasoned dancers.
Elaine Williams beauty contest winner? Really?
Debbie Reynolds did?
are you serious??
She was Miss Burbank, or something. More importantly she was a multi-talented actress, singer and dancer and perky as all get-out at a time when the USA wanted that.
She did win a contest but she had been dancing since she was 16 and was very hard working and well seasoned by this point. Long term of course, she was just getting started with her phenomenal dancing.
Classics or not,I can enjoy any Debbie Reynolds movie because of her alone and I’m so pleased I had a chance to tell her so when
I was lucky enough to meet her after her brilliant one woman show down here in New Zealand.Debbie was so special.Love her forever.
She seemed sweet through and through. Sad about she and her daughter dying.
Wow! That must have been incredible to experience meeting her and actually speaking to her in person. A memory to cherish.
Fosse was terrific as a dancer and a choreographer, but as I’ve spent an evening watching his phenomenal dance routines, I’m now convinced who couldn’t even begin to shuffle off to buffalo without being near hat of some sort. Then again, hats were part of his style and ultimately, his trademark.
Or gloves! lol. I had seen the musical “It’s Always Fair Weather” and was looking right at another legendary choreographer, Michael Kidd and did not even know it. I learned that Gene Kelly stood back while Michael choreographed the trash can lid dance. If Kelly willingly gives over control, you know the other person is phenomenal.
Because he started balding early: making lemonade out of a lemon.
Of course totally spontanious unrehersed perfectly synchronised dance. A time when going to the movies was guaranteed feel good entertainment, everyone leaving the cinema dancing and humming the show stopping song.
Totally agree. People seem to want to lean into the dark side of everything. All the movies nowadays even have a blue colour wash to them to emphasize that
There are those who can dance and those who ARE dance. This clip really shows the difference. I’ve not seen Fosse before. Just wow
Fosse is so spare, all muscle, such speed, power and control.
And the duet with Van reminds me of Kelly and O'Connor doing Moses Supposes. That's high company.
I LOVE Bobby Van!
Hello TERRY, How are you doing?
確實是好萊塢輝煌歌舞年代,再也沒法回返了~~
I am familiar with how Bob Fosse looks later in his life but when I saw him in this movie I recognized him right away.
God..what talent! Clear that he would go on to become huge star/choreographer that he did. And yes. BOBBY VAN TOO. Both of them in another favorite...kiss me kate..
Geez, I forgot all about Bobby Van and I remember I always like him. Thanks for the clip!
GREAT number! I directed Bobby Van in his last stage show, DAMN YANKEES back in 1979. We added dance music in "Two Lost Souls" just so we could feature his amazing talent.
Ted Kopulos how really cold out of this Bobby van was my father's first cousin and I had met him a few times I even got to go backstage at No No Nanette and I met blue tequila and Jack Gilford and passatelli it was a really nice guy down to earth and I'm sure you must have known because you worked with him well thanks for your replies
Robert Sutton may not
As I was watching, I was reminded of that song. There was a twenty year period when Gwen Verdon could've seduced me, though she'd might have had to shove past Juliet Prowse.
you should check out the whole movie. it's available on VHS, perhaps, from your library. Also, if you haven't seen it, I love Melvin, with Donadl O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds.
One of the few recordings of Bob Fosse dancing. And wow, is he something extra! He puts everyone else in the shade. He had pizzazz plus!
Watch him with Bobby Van again in Kiss Me Kate.
TV star Robert Fuller is sitting at table directly behind Bob Fosse, at left 0:30. He appeared in many films, sometimes in the chorus, most notably during the “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” number in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.”
Nice to see them all so playful and uncomplicated.
Bob Fosse...the Mozart of 20th century dance! I could watch him forever!!!
Dang! I just love watching Fosse dance! And that grin!
A great example of how to take what's a mediocre song at best and turn it into a class act of a musical number.
The music can't distract from the dance. Perfect arrangement to focus audience eye on the dancing.
I always liked Barbara Ruick. She was so funny as the stepsister in Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1965 Cinderella with Lesley Ann Warren.
Love Bobby Van! Moved like silk!
❤ I love your phrase "moved like silk". That truly describes Bobby Van's dancing in this.
This movie was on TCM on my birthday. What better present that these magnificent people?
I swear that is Jerry Orbach on the left at 2:00. Imdb says that he wasn't active (left college to act.) until 1955, but he could have gotten a bit part w/ no credit. Anyone else think that this might be him?
I was always a big fan of Bobby Van.
WOW! I've never seen that clip before. What an amazing dance routine!
This is such great energy dancing with terrific talented dancers....one of the best coordinated numbers with these two couples. Great, great video.....many thanks for it.
This is wonderful. Just beautiful!
Barbara Ruick! I've never seen her outside of "Carousel"!!
Why havn't all the classics like this come out on DVD??? It's so frustrating!
Insanely fantastic. oh what a talented man he was, all of them. Brilliant, thank you.
Did you know? Singer/Actress Barbara Ruik was the first wife of legendary fim composer John Williams. She died way too early due to cerebral
hemorrhage back in 1974. John Williams dedicated his Violin Concerto to her. They have three children. Jennifer, Mark and Joseph. Joseph is the youngest and also became pretty famous as lead singer of the band "Toto".
Bobby Van should be called Swivel Hips.
Anyone notice the guy sitting at the table on the left is the actor Robert Fuller, he was a dancer before he started acting.
Fosse is superb. Trivia fact: the young Robert Fuller is at the center table on the left.
it's SHOWTIME folks!!
LOVE these classic musical movies!!
Fosse lights up room wherever he goes! This is real entertainment and dance!
Robert Fuller, too. Just sitting there at a table behind the stairs, looking his usual gorgeous self.
funny thing is that Debbie Reynolds was Carrie Fishers (princess Leia) mom and Barbara Ruick was the ex wife of John Williams (composer of Star Wars)
The more accurate term is late wife. They didn't divorce, she died in 1974 of a cerebral brain hemorrhage.
Yes, and she was only 43. Her mother was Lurene Tuttle, a character actress with numerous credits on radio (her voice was called "the most-heard voice in America".) She made many movies and appeared in scores of TV shows. She is very recognizable, even if you don't know her name, i.e.,as the sheriff's wife in "Psycho."
Yes FantasyPiano317, that is interesting trivia information. Ruick also played Carrie in the movie "Carousel" (1956), and one of the stepsisters in the TV production of "Cinderella" (1965).
Correct!
And to add...Barbara Ruick’s son has been the singer of Toto since the 80’s.
It's so nice to see how many people still remember and love Bobby van Bobby van was my dad's first cousin I had met him several times he was such a nice guy and it's a shame besides so early p
l adored Bobby Van. He should have been so much more recognized because his talent was amazing. That he holds his own against Bob Fosse is a testament to how gifted he was. I'm so sorry that your family lost him so early. He was a gift to the world. Thank you for sharing your story and many blessings,
Fosse was breathtaking
Simply great... like always with Bob Fosse.
So i watch this clip of Debbie Reynolds dancing, and she's great!
I dont understand then, why she was so intimidated after getting the role in "Singin' In The Rain", saying in interviews that she had to learn how to dance because she had no experience... 🤔🤨
I'm watching the Fosse/Verdon documentary! He was a genious in choreography and of course his dancing..He was one talented man! And his style of dancing still lives on! 💗
And I can’t get enough of Sam Rockwell!
How great it is!
Fosse and Van were also featured dancers on “Kiss Me Kate.” Great to see this clip of them.
Bobby Van reminds me of Ray Bolger here.
Loved those old college movies.
He is só amaizing dancer. And He had style. That's why he was a stone in the shoes for many of the time. fosse and kelly are the best.. great teachers and choreographers
This otherwise little-known MGM musical was a kind of summer trifle that was barely over a hour long. It came out before "Kiss Me Kate"made Fosse a real name in dance.
Great clip I'd never seen Bob Fosse and Bobby Van dance and that Barbara Ruick's waistline is under 20 inches how is that healthy!
Yes....Madame Williams Rouick.... Woah, quelles classe quelle élégance.... Beauté chanteuse et danseuse, j'adore... Vraiment une très grande Dame, disparu trop jeune malheureusement... RIP.... # catherine Nasic
Bob Fosse and Bobby Van were both in Kiss Me, Kate that same year. Their dance routines looked amazing but they were so hard on the dancers' bodies. Debbie Reynolds talked about working on Singin' in the Rain and how her feet were often bleeding at the end of a day of rehearsal. And of course Fosse and Van both died fairly young, 60 and 51.
Barbara Ruick passed away at a rather young age, leaving behind her widower, composer and conductor John Williams.
