The mosque was founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri, daughter of the wealthy merchant Mohammed Al-Fihri. She had vowed to use all of her inheritance to build a mosque for her community, who had immigrated from Kairouan in the early 9th century. The name of the university means "University of the people of Kairouan".

Welcome to Morocco! though I just want to make things clear here and I think many people don't know this: We Moroccans call ourselves Arabs Or Amazigh, But NEVER Berber. Berber is the name the colonizers called us because they thought that our ancestors are barbarians due to their way of defending our country against them. So the name Berber or Berbers is kind of an insult to us

Loved the food and the mint tea was addictive:). The Berbers were lovely folks but I have a lot of issues with other aspects🤷🏼‍♀️. The Saudi Muslims we ran into while there were awful. One was yelling at my husband for taking photos of vegetables in a cart because there were women nearby? We never take photos of folks unless we ask or know it’s acceptable. This attitude was pervasive. In many cafés, women were to drink and eat hidden in a separate room. We sat outside at one and a man came up yelling at our waiter because I was sitting there. It’s better in the tourist areas but I was angry throughout our trip.
