Gracie , reactive arthritis. It got worse later so the tour was postponed until they get a good treatment. He said in interviews that, in the worst moments of the disease, even the water pressure on a shower was painful.
Actually, Daniel recently confessed that it was during The Greatest View in this show that he started to struggle to move due to his arthritis, at that time it wasn't treated yet
Time will speak to how incredible Silverchair really were. They were one of the great, great, great rock bands of all time. The total package. Songs, performance, growth/progression over their career. As popular as they were I think they were and remain underrated. Much of the songwriting is so incredible and it got better and better from album to album. Although albums like Diorama and Young Modern did not sell as well outside of Australia as Frogstomp and Freak Show did, I think in time (and it's already happening) will be held as Silverchair's best albums and all time rock n roll classics. Up there with the other great, great bands and songwriters. In the long run it doesn't make a difference but it is a shame that Daniel Johns and Ben Gillies can't find a way to compromise each one's petty hang ups about the other and find a way to be friends and enjoy each other's company. The world was incredibly lucky that a songwriter and performer like Johns was able to connect and create with a drummer and performer like Gillies. The great rock songwriters who have lived and died without the world ever knowing because they were never able to connect with a proper drummer is likely innumerable. Had the Daniel Johns, Kurt Cobain's, Billy Corgan's, Chris Cornell's etc of the world never met the Ben Gillies, Dave Grohl's, Jimmy Chamberlin's and Matt Cameron's of the world, I sincerely doubt they would have become platinum selling artists.
Yés they will never regroup as Ben and Chris have the petty jealousies sadly. Daniel gave them his childhood from 1992 til 2011 ..He was not well during many of those years and needed the break to do his own thing. He is very proud of his Silverchair legacy and does not want it destroyed, but he would not regroup for $50 million and a gun to his head

so interesting as an American to watch silverchair as received by an Australian audience. they were a side note here, seen in the same vein as derivative grunge bands like Bush, but Daniel Johns is obviously an incredible talent. and at his most beautiful here
Bush was not grunge. They're more alternative rock...like STP. It's not a diss. Grunge & Alternative Rock was our mainstays in the 90s. The sound can be interchangeable but Bush was AR.
Watching this 20 years later and my heart is beating out of my chest like I was there. So much love for this band, this music, the majesty of the musicianship in Daniel Johns. I am one of the fans that would only get the beauty of his musical development much later, I was way to young for how ahead of his time he was!
Most people get off the train somewhere between Neon Ballroom and Diorama. By Faraway Stables this era of the band was gone. I guess it's a double edged sword as the lead singer self admittedly said he wasn't in a good mental place during those albums.
Yep. But they broke up when they realised they were going down hill and their music sucked. Their first two albums were killer. On par with a lot of the big grunge bands. But their last couple of albums were abortions. John's experimenting too much. Pop music which was not Silverchair.

Fuck views?! All those artists with a billion views are manufactured, hollow garbage. Their shit is so well produced it makes the crowd think they like it. Like Saul Williams, not very popular, but man does his style shit on almost everyone. KRS-1 and Chino XL are two rappers that have underground popularity and shit on the Jay-Z's and such. Views or listens doesn't equal quality. Scott Storch is probably one of the best producers on the planet, his music has a unique style. While everyone looks at the EDM dudes as geniuses Storch sits back as one of the King's. He doesn't need to tell anyone he's great. He's just great.
I remember being like 15 years old and figuring out ways I could sneak in to this. Chris on bass, I was in love for literally years before and after this lol
I reckon 2002 would have to be the peak of Daniel's voice, he seems to be hitting those high-notes on the Diorama songs far more comfortably than at any other time - it'd be interesting to see a performance of Across the Night at that point, since he struggled a little with it from 2003 onwards.
There is none. This show was in Jan '02, three months before Diorama was released. They only played a handful of shows after returning from their 12 month performing break. Sadly they held-off performing the more over-the-top songs until the album launch tour (which was meant to coincide with the launch of the album in April). They ended up cancelling all shows after the Big Day Out tour because of Dan's reactive arthritis. So they never played any of those over-the-top songs until 2003 when Dan had recovered (but his voice never hit those 2002 and earlier peaks again, his rampant alcoholism which started up around the same time is mostly the reason). Drunk Dan is nowhere near as good a singer as stoner/pothead Dan (which he was before his turn to alcoholism).
Still astounded at this dude’s voice and that these 3 managed to create a sound that huge. Totally respect them wanting to move on and do something different, but they were pretty special in their time.

Yea and this 7 whole years after their debut Frogstomp!!!!!
best performance of The Door I've ever seen.....same for World Upon Your Shoulders. These guys are so talented it's unreal! Wish they'd reunite any time soon.
Prayers to that comment!
They did... and put out straight lines... and everyone wished they had just kind of left us with the former glory that was Silverchair.
@@PeterParker-yb1in straight lines is a fucken banger track
Absolutely!!!
@@fran_akron yeah but a dreamer can dream lol nowadays I just want Daniel to release whatever he's been teasing on Instagram, I'm curious to know what he's up to.
Daniel Johns. what an artist. Hes been through it all. Respect
Then they wrote shitty songs.
this band saved me from my depression
!!!
Must have been a light depression.
Diorama absolutely did that for me!
So true
so interesting as an American to watch silverchair as received by an Australian audience. they were a side note here, seen in the same vein as derivative grunge bands like Bush, but Daniel Johns is obviously an incredible talent. and at his most beautiful here
Bush was not grunge.
These kids were ahead of there time such young talents 🤘🔥🎸😮🌃
For real. They just don’t make em like that anymore. I’m 42. Grew up on them. 🥰
THE DOOR hooooolyyyyyy smokes! They absolutely shredded it!
0:57 Can’t believe some terrible human threw a water bottle (?) at his head. Shameful. Yet he kept on singing and gave a brilliant performance ❤
I didn't realise just how good this band was. Great sound.
I can't get over their age vs their level of talent. It's mad.
Never heard this band before, missed out on a great band here!
Most people get off the train somewhere between Neon Ballroom and Diorama. By Faraway Stables this era of the band was gone. I guess it's a double edged sword as the lead singer self admittedly said he wasn't in a good mental place during those albums.
Really.. glad you found them.. frogstomp is my favorite album of there's..I dnt know anything els.. but it had alot if good songs
@@joshuataft5541Silverchair's Frogstomp is the Australian Nevermind 😮
THIS Band could have been the biggest in the World for a very long time
Yep. But they broke up when they realised they were going down hill and their music sucked. Their first two albums were killer. On par with a lot of the big grunge bands. But their last couple of albums were abortions. John's experimenting too much. Pop music which was not Silverchair.
@@stuartjohnson6476 are you the same person you were 15-20 years ago. I doubt it. Silverchair's music changed as they grew up. .... simple as that.
Stuart Johnson the only poor album they really have is young modern the other ones are all fantastic
@@saulkennedy7155 I agree. frog stomp and freak show aren't bad, but neon ball room and diorama was them in their prime and at their most orignal. young modern was just something else. the firts four albums had a natural progesseion. young modern was just jaring
zak rowe eh I dunno the more I listen to young modern the more and more I start to like it. All across the world is a really good song but the rest are kinda iffy. Diorama and NB were on a completely different level from the other 3 albums. I will never understand people who claim that silverchairs first two records are the only good ones.
Fantastic voice. Also, he was pretty af.
Yeah he was, still is so f***ing "HOT" & Amazingly talented!!🤘😎
@@cherilamkin6634 I'd kill to be this young, pretty, stylish and talented
Diorama era Daniel Johns is like 'im not gay but I would' status like josh hartnett around the same time frame
And slave fucking rides btw
💯😏 I’m 42 & I grew up listening to them, always had a crush!
Silver chair Rock. I listen to them every day. I love this band.
silverchair! All together 🙄 pls
...also no capital letters, just 'silverchair' 👌🏻
God they sound fucking awesome. Saw them in Montreal in '00 and they were the loudest band I've ever seen including Motorhead...
00:00 Israel's Son ; 06:03 Slave ; 10:20 Miss You love ; 14:08 Ana's Song ; 17:33 World Upon Your Shoulders ; 21:57 The Greatest View ; 25:53 One Way Mule ; 29:36 The Door ; 33:30 Anthem For The Year 2000 ; 38:25 Freak. Enjoy!! :-)
Thank you!
avedic You're welcome ^^
2002 - 2003 the peak of Daniel Johns' voice.
1997
1999 was definitely the best
@@TheAlphaCreations01 Nah, he has the timbre of 1999 still but with additional vocal range in 2002.
Sonny
His voice changed brutally in 2007 , it’s unbelievable
@@TheAlphaCreations01 Yeah, it still sounded good but not as good. He seemed to not have been working on singing as much or maybe smoking cigarettes really changed his voice.
I can't believe how good this is.
What a great sound!! Its so honest
I has this downloaded from somewhere in .mpg back in 2004 while in high school, what a band!!!
wow, greatest view performance was incredible!
All these empty artist have millions of views while this is one of the best live shows I've seen. Shame.
Let's feel the prestige of loving great music and actually, we dont want the masses in here! It's not their thing!
This performance of Miss You, Love makes the tears well up every time.
8:45 the true power of DJ vocals... an absolute animal of the vocal instrument
21:58 Absolutely blown away by how amazing this riff sounds live.
Such an underrated voice. World upon your shoulder feels very Jeff Buckley - chills
Everything that has ever happened is underrated
Totally man, two truly great singers. They always sing with emotion and sincerity. Beautiful.
@@rafanj824 Yep 😻
his vocals are really great in this concert tbh
I remember being like 15 years old and figuring out ways I could sneak in to this. Chris on bass, I was in love for literally years before and after this lol
Can’t…..stop…..watching. So good!
I reckon 2002 would have to be the peak of Daniel's voice, he seems to be hitting those high-notes on the Diorama songs far more comfortably than at any other time - it'd be interesting to see a performance of Across the Night at that point, since he struggled a little with it from 2003 onwards.
Dude I completely agree.
The beginning of the end of a good rock band.
Still astounded at this dude’s voice and that these 3 managed to create a sound that huge. Totally respect them wanting to move on and do something different, but they were pretty special in their time.
I got to see Tomorrow live in 1999 and I will never forget that show !!
They make us Aussies proud still to this day !! 🥹🇦🇺
Thank you SO MUCH for posting the clearest, absolute best versions of live Silverchair shows!!!
been watching this video for years, I just couldn't stop... =)
Yeah..me too...over&over again...
Such an epic performance of World Upon Your Shoulders... just godlike
The rest of the world got it...America missed the ball with these guys. I can think of 10 super popular bands that America adores; and these guys BLOW THEM AWAY !!🎉😊🎉

The creativity of Daniel Johns is on show
Daniel Johns is" HoT AF here,...😋
An Amazing f***ing musician, lyricist, singer & frontman❣😎🤘,...I really miss silverchair😏
Silverchair kicks major ass!!! saw these cats many times during teenage years
for the very first time the bass is so loud in the mix. I like it!!!
lol the way he sung freak was pretty funny. using a whole bunch of weird voices. Perfect for a song like that.
Shamic Entertainment the live performances of Freak made me love the song a whole lot more. His funny voices and expressions were hilarious 😆
Every Freak live version is funny at all. The most funniest was at homebake in 1999.
I was in the audience at this show!! The first & only time Channel V filmed the Gold Coast Big Day Out instead of doing the Sydney one. I remember noticing the cameras on the day and losing my mind knowing I'd get to tape the show off cable a few weeks later :D
Sucks they didn't keep the first two songs from the set, they were mind blowing. They opened with an insanely awesome version of Emotion Sickness and went straight into Without You, then that is where this video picks up from.
System of a Down, Amen, Superheist, Regurgitator and Spiderbait all put on amazing sets, but Silverchair topped it for me!
Pretty sure they played paint Pastel Princess after without you aswell
@@keeganedwardsasmr6686 You're absolutely correct. Being the huge nerd I am, I used to scribble the setlist down on the back of the ticket stubb as they were playing to help trigger memories in the future. I checked my BDO ticket and sure enough, there she is. Good memory!
one of their best live sets ever
Can’t stop watching this. Not aware of the band at the time. This is Silverchair at their height. Mesmerizing ❤️
Daniel in that shirt is the handsomest he’s ever been 💛💛💛✨🌟✨
The most handsome (?) 😬😅
Powerful show!!!!
This is my favorite youtube video ever
I fucking mean it
@@leonherrera7957 agreed
best silverchair concert line up!!!!!
I remember when silverchair headlined big day out I couldn't believe how well they performed and how everybody was jumping and moshing instead of recording the concert on their iPhone -_-
Well it was 2002 and people didn't have iphones back then but I guarantee if they did they'd be filming
They didn’t headline.
Sounds like a bullshit story all round really...
smart phones ruined live music
Apple uses child slaves girls
I feel no difference between their life performance &in the album, just awesome..😘😘
21:58 my favorite song:) greatest view!
Fuck, what a set! Some guys are just on some shows, these guys were in a different stratosphere that night! Best band in the world at the hight of their career on that night!
The guitar tone is unreal bro
I was in that crowd was an awesome BDO line up that year 🤙
He's so beautiful 😔🌷
That "Go!" in Slave (9:09) with the lower octave on the guitar kicks so much ass.
Gosh this is so f'ing magical!
such a talent this guys
Oh. Yeah, so. Awesome. To. Find. So. Much. Early. Concert. Footage. I. Love. It. ! 😸
Duuuuuude, I was only 9 years old at that time. Wish I was older to see them live! They sounded REALLY good live 👏👏👏
PS for girls: As a gal in my 30s I must say that Daniel was so handsome and he was only in his early 20s, I feel guilty lol 😅But really, am I the only one who thinks he looks older? 😶🌫
1:31 wow perfect vocals
saw them on this tour... they were truly awesome
16-17 here, had a national day declared for them. How FREAKing awesome
Your math ain't mathin'. Born in '79, this show was in '02. Still impressive but.
The Door is insane!
Yes! Daniel's vocals 😱 just perfect 🙌
We want the old silverchair come back!!
mate, im expecting them to come back as 35/40 year olds, big long beards etc......when they get older and realise what they had, after they live life for some time, and explode with emotion, back onto that next album!!!!
They’ll be back in a few years. The money is too good to pass up.
I just want silverchair to come back
WTF happened with Daniels
