When you just hear about a guy named "Mr. Wrestling 2", you figure this guy to be the jobber to end all jobbers. Instead you get a 50 year old bad-ass that damn near stole the whole show... actually he really did. Much respect to Mr. Wrestling 2.
I always took Jim’s opinion seriously, but I always thought he kinda overhyped the good ol days. But the more I old matches I watch, I see it more and more. Just the idea that there was actual “rules” that where “followed”(when’s the last time you’ve seen a tactical time out called?) is in stark contrast to when a midget leprechaun can burst out of the center of the mat with a baseball bat and it’s all good with the ref.
That match was Midnight Express Magic, pure and simple. They made a Green Magnum and a 50 year old+ Mr Wrestling II look great. Jimmy doing commentary was great, hope to see more of these.
Bobby’s spit sell might be one of the greatest things I’ve seen in wrestling. It’s so simple but so effective and really says “I just got punched in the face HARD”. I dunno, maybe that’s not a big deal and there are other things that should be way more impressive but that’s just one of those details that makes me go “HAH”
I saw Dolf Zigler do it on a raw I attended in January. I don't know if the spot was on TV or during a commercial but it got a loud "ooooooh" from the crowd. It may have been gum he spit.
This is what wrestling is all about. It's the classic heels versus babyfaces, drawing heat as they break every rule from behind the referee's back. Bobby Eaton could sell like a dream, and Dennis Condry was great with his calls for time out and pleading for mercy. Love it!
At 16:10, the ref is looking directly at where Corny is ready to pull the ropes down on magnum … but Bobby Eaton appears from nowhere and kinda bumps into the ref to draw his attention & block corny from his field of vision at the exact perfect moment. Genius
You can just tell Cornette loves talking us through these old Midnight Express matches! And I’d love to see Cornette talk us through other matches especially ones with the Rock ‘N’ Roll Express matches, the battle of the Expresses!!
The watch along was amazing. Mr cornette this was spectacular in the way you called the spots. We as fans of yours and the business, mainly yours, this is absolutely the greatest idea I've seen for wrestling. I remember watching you and midnight as a kid and you 3/4 were always fun to watch. Please WE NEED MORE OF THIS with the clips attached. Good matches would be ANYTHING NWA 93 and before especially with matches you would really know how to call like this.. Maybe some early double double (reference there). I genuinely miss watching these older matches like this or early Steiners, Midnight, Horsemen, Hollywood Blondes.... Even an Abby match if it's possible to call a blood bath like this lol

I remember those days well! It seemed so much larger than life back then. I remember my dad knew a security guard who let us in the side door of the Township Auditorium (Columbia, SC). The first match I saw live involved The Mongolians, and I cried when they came near us in the stands. That was before Arn Anderson got stabbed by a fan in Augusta, GA, at the Bell Auditorium (I think), and wrestlers stopped fighting in the stands as much. I think they were fighting Paul Jones & Mr Wrestling II, and took the fight into the crowd about 4-5 seats from. I thought I was gonna get killed. I was about 11 or so, lol. I may have some of the details wrong, but I’m 100% sure it was the Mongolians.
I dont think i ever realised what great shape Dennis was in, he looks fantastic and then you get Bobby who i know from what Corny says was rock solid, but has those genetics where he could be in the gym for 100 years and not develop any definition, oh and by the way what a great match
