    So let's go ahead and address the following points:
    - At 4:15, I called this an ethernet connection because that's what you do after talking about routers before filming. It's a USB Type-B. The port that I referred to as the USB input is actually an HDMI input. We all have off days. Mine was on camera. Life goes on..
    - I didn't mention DAC performance because I'm straight up not a fan of the ESS sound. If you like clean, clear, slightly thin sound with big imaging, then you'll love it. End of DAC assessment.
    - This review is focused on the stack. Not just the amps or the pre-amp. I know some people would love three reviews in one, but there isn't enough time to get that done.
    - And lastly, I realize there are endless components that could be used in the comparison. I went with the one that I felt was most relevant and interesting, even if it put the focus more on the amps than on the PS stack as a whole.

    Tell it like it is and call it as you see it! That is what I like about your reviews. Cut no ice and give no slack! Whether anyone else sees the set up as you do is clearly another matter. You give your perceptions and it is up to each individual to determine their own opinion. You are a guidepost for the undecided and here is where they must determine for themselves what is important. For those less experienced, you give them a tour to help them make a decision based on your findings. It is still up to the individual what is important. Really good review Sean! Always honest!

    Ditto what Tim said - I love my pair of M700's. I got mine used and saved 40% so the value to performance ratio was a bit better. I have mine paired with a Cary Audio SL-100. Between the two, the separation is amazing - but the biggest difference between this and my old system is that it is like I gained a speaker. The midrange sound stage was really brought out and put front and center. There are so many recordings that I can close my eyes and really feel the singer is right there in front of me. I can't wait to get my Tekton Double Impacts that I ordered yesterday thanks to your review Sean.

      @jaycurtis8572 2 года назад +1

      @@roig8578 They sound very good. Honestly, you don't need that much power as the Tekons are very efficient. I have since moved on from my M700 and have gone to a tube amplifier. For my tastes, it was the right move as I was looking for some more warmth in the mids, but the M700 are still very good and more neutral with the Tekons, which can be arguably better.

    I bought one of PS Audio's first products, the Phono Preamp. In fact I bought it back when Mike Moffat of Schiit Audio fame was working at the stereo shop in Santa Ana, CA and he's the one who rang it up. This was in the '70s and that phono preamp is still going strong and amazing people with it's capabilities. A few years later I bought a PS Audio Elite Plus Integrated amp, and guess what? It's still going strong and still amazing people (although with a new owner. Had to sell it a couple years ago to pay bills but the new owner is a friend so he keeps me up to date on how much he loves it.).

    I do have a preference for the Hypex based Class D amps, but when you consider the overall sound quality and power, pretty much all of the Class D offerings are amazing. People forget that we are talking about several hundred watts of power per channel, over 90% efficiency, and near zero heat. I run my Nord Class D monoblocks during the hot summer months and my Primaluna tube amp during the rest of the year. The Nords are not embarrassed by a direct comparison to the tubes.

      @@beitie What? I simply don't care for this pair. I consider them to be very overpriced from a price/performance standpoint. The amp in particular. It is equaled by at least two $250 amplifiers I can name. It's significant.
      B&O products are typically timeless, masterpieces of industrial engineering. Their 1970s audio gear still looks fresh and modern and even awe-inspiring today.
      The PS products here are not unattractive to me. But they are basic and simple and not in B&O's league.
      To equate them as such is to undeservedly elevate these products and diminish the usual B&O timeless, always in style, albeit expensive beauty.

      Tim Bathras, Let’s start a club Tim! I too am a ZU owner and am now a part of the Maggie family. It’s so fun going back and forth between the two systems. I have had my ZU’s for 1.5 years and my Maggie LRS’s for about a month. They are currently not hooked up because I sold my amp that was trying to power them but it just wasn’t working. So I have a DAC Stereo Maraschino coming in next week! I almost went with PS Audio but ultimately decided on the Maraschino. So you really like the Freya huh? I am thinking about going that route as well. I want to hear more opinions on the SS Freya. My amp and DAC is all balanced XLR so I want to keep that chain intact or I would just go with the Saga, which is also another “Stellar” product from Schiit. I know, I owned one for about 6 months.

    Hi Sean, thank you for this review! You had indicated previously that you might not do that comparison, but I'm so glad you did! I think a lot of people will find this review useful -- I certainly did! I ended up splurging on M700s to replace an old (but impressive) Krell amp (KSA series.) I sacrificed a bit of bass slam for better resolution, imaging, "air," and a lower noise floor... and of course a lot less heat generation! I am very happy with the pair, especially when saving some $$ by purchasing used or finding a dealer with a discount. :)

    Awesome comparison. You know sean, the comparison really really really makes the product you are reviewing very much more "relatable", I mean "I get it." Well as you said, 3K vs 1.3K, well, that's a big difference. Just to add, with the iFiTube 2 as my Preamp, the Zonemaster is transformed. First time I heard it, I said "Wow...." So much good useable info in 15 mins, you are No1 in this domain. Well, it would been 10 mins or less, if you skip the Intro about the history, what perf envelope it was aiming for, it would be just like... Yeah Bruce Lee! Quick-efficient punches that KOs, rather than flowery movements that just looks good, but no KO.

    I have not heard this stack yet - neither the gain cell dac nor the amps. But what you describe sounds uncannily familiar to my Pioneer AVR SC-LX87 (Elite SC-79 in USA) of 2013 vintage. It is Class D and has ESS Sabre 9016 chip. 😁 Detailed, warm, dynamic, spacious, and muscular presentation but equally refined for 2 channel stereo music too which is what I use it for more than 80% of the time! Yes but don't confuse high power with high speed. Transient response is what is important. That requires 20MHz Ft output transistors at a minimum and a very low Z, high current supply in a conventional design.
      Where most home Class D amps fall far short presently is with the design of the detrimental, phasey, speed and damping killing output filters. PSA and a handful of others have made good filter design a priority in some of their class D designs. I'm not sure about this model. It looks a little thin to contain the required large core/AWG inductors, although they could be mounted horizontally.
      The pro sound builders are light years ahead of the home audio crowd in this regard.

    I’ve been living with the same stack (in black) that’s reviewed here for 6 months and if someone slapped a Class A or AB sticker on it, you wouldn’t know it. I don’t care how much of a “Golden Ear” you are. There is a Class JFET input stage BEFORE the ICE amplifier. All the B.S. against Class D is because those Audiofools are listening to the specification sheet and not the amplifier that the designers intended. Class D is the new AB so to speak. How it’s implemented is the key to phenomenal sound. I could have ordered ICE Amps from Parts Express and integrated it into my highly customized Bose 901 Series 2 EQ and about $2k but I didn’t. The amplifier simply takes the “Analog Cell” signature sound and doesn’t add or subtract anything to it as any good amplifier should do. There is NO SWITCHING NOISE or high frequency beat signals or Class D sound. I’m not into Tubes, did Class AB many many times, and can’t afford a high power Class A Amplifier (I wish).
    I don’t do Vinyl anymore, and own several Bose 901 Series 1 & 2 Speakers which my Stellar Stack drives with incredible highs, sweet mids, and deep bass. My 901’s are setup so that the sweet spot does not fool you with the “direct reflecting” stereo everywhere sound. Center imaging is locked in the middle as it should be and my speakers do disappear.

      Barry D'Souza , what Maggie’s and what are you driving them with? I have the new LRS’s and have an amp coming in from The Digital Amplifier Company, the Stereo Maraschino. I am going to give that a try and see what happens.

    • @itsbaz
      @itsbaz 5 лет назад +2

      @@jeffadams9699 Coincidentally, I too was testing my new LRS's last night.
      Initially drove them with Emotiva XPA-1L monoblocks in Class-A mode and they sounded sublime! But then Sean's review hit my notification bar and his Sprout100 reference got me curious, so I decided to go where no man has gone before - drive the Maggie's with a relatively low power, Class-D, budget amp, and boy was I surprised!
      The Sprout100 drove the Maggie's with ease!
      Don't get me wrong, the sound signature did change from what I was hearing with the monoblocks; it thinned out a wee bit, became slightly more 'grainy/harsh', with some loss in imaging & detail, and bass response dropped significantly (though the Sprout's built in optional bass boost compensated well), but never did the little switching amp seem to struggle with the LRS's. I was quite impressed by what it could do (exceeded my expectations for the size/price) and it only increased my curiosity about these types of combos.
      Might have to connect my Peachtree Nova next to see how it compares.
      Don't think you'll have any issues driving the LRS's with the Maraschino based on what I heard last night, especially if you're getting the King version.
      You'll have to let us know the results once it comes in...
      Disclaimer - Notes on the Sprout100 above are based on very limited listening.

    • @jeffadams9699
      @jeffadams9699 5 лет назад

      Barry D'Souza , NICE! I have had my eye on that little Sprout 100 for a minute. And Tommy, the designer and owner of DAC, has talked to me quite a bit. He is an awesome guy and he just LOVES music! And making it sound spectacular. He has given me lessons on amps and it’s so much more than just the watts. He said the way his Maraschino is designed, the LRS’s will be easy to drive in 48v version. Pitch black background, 0 noise. And so on. I am getting his DAC, DAC too. From everything I have read, his amps are pretty special. I am also going to try it on my ZU’s to see how it sounds. Are you a member of Audiokarma or Audiocircle? Go to Audiocircle, that’s where a lot of information is on DAC. Do you have your Maggie’s in an open room?

    • @itsbaz
      @itsbaz 5 лет назад +1

      @@jeffadams9699 Thanks for sharing - I just looked at their DAC's and I'm very intrigued. I was considering the Denafrips offerings for my next upgrade, but I think I'll give these guys a serious look now.
      I also think the Maraschino will pair well with Zu's. We've all heard the talk about Zu's playing well with low power SET's etc., but my own experience has been the opposite: My Zu's come ALIVE when driven by high power, quality Class D amps (sounds beautiful with my Nova220SE).
      To answer your other questions....The new Maggie's are in a dedicated open(ish) listening room, several feet from any walls/gear, so lots of space to breathe and sound their best; they are VERY placement sensitive.
      As for forums, I'm a longtime lurker on several, but not too active. Might have to remedy this soon...
      Cheers!

      Chris Rogers DACs have one major requirement for accurate sound and that's a proper filter. unfortunately yours fails this. I suggest you lean what makes a proper dac. many people are lead away from very good gear by your methods as well as most human ears are crap. You mention people in their basements while disregarding that one piece of equipment is over 20k. If you like your sound more power too you but don't pull ignorance into this. I quite like the sound of tenor separates but that doesn't mean they are perfectly accurate.

    Really awesome review! Love the comparison at the end too. PS audio has peaked my interest and recently watched a youtube video discussion with Jay and others comparing the sound experience between the PS Audio Stellar and Parasound A23/P6. I think I'm leaning towards the Parasound A23/P6 separates as I like that warmer/smoother sound. And would be pairing it with the B&W 603 towers or Paradigm 800f tower speakers. So I think the Parasound would be a great match and take the edge off the brightness I little from these two speakers.
    Sean or anyone here, do think I'll notice a significant difference by going with the Parasound A23/P6 separates over the Parasound Halo Hint 6?

    I just heard you say you're going to transition away from Audio Reviews--and you described how much work is involved. It must suck. I hope you still find inspiration in the music.
    This is a good review of the M700s. I am less than a week into my audition of them. So far, the best thing about them is how well they play a low levels. I haven't had an amplifier that gave such a full and musical presentation at low (early morning or late evening) levels--and that's a big plus in my home!
    As they and I break in (some say 300 hrs!), I am hearing clarity and spaciousness at all volume levels. The bass is tight so far, but not yet as deep as my past amps.The M700s seem to be a good fit with my Polk R500s and Def Tech ProSub 800s. I have a lot of headroom at the moment and the musicality is strong: vocal harmonies (GD's HD remaster of "Attics of My Life") are full and rich. Rosa Passos's voice is so sweet and pure, especially on the Chesky Records release with the full and musically satisfying bass of Ron Carter at her side. I am a little disappointed that Zappa's feedback-charged guitar on "The Black Page (New Age Version)" doesn't sparkle and dominate the soundstage as a live 3D image the way it did with my Vandersteen 2CEs with a Bryston 3B. That was special-effects quality live sound, and I miss it. However, that has been missing, more or less, since I had to downsize to the Polks. On the other hand, the horns from Make a Jazz Noise Here sound much better, much more musical and more balanced with the guitar presentation. It is a different listening experience: more good than bad, ultimately. And finally, so far, some old low-fi cuts actually sound better with the M700s than I have heard with any of my amps: the Loud, Fast and Out of Control compilation of 50s rockers sounds great! The M700s preserve the grit with really clear vocals that make these records scream! (And the less than great sounding (for me) Roadcase releases from Wilco are drastically improved with the boosted midrange of the M700s. It is a big improvement for me.)
    So far, the M700s are promising. If, as they break in, they flesh out a bit with the bass--as the S300 did in the second week of heavy play--then they'll be keepers.
    Thanks for your review and I hope you enjoy the music more however it is reproduced!

    That's interesting how the input stage totally changes the sound signature of the amps you compare. The Ice & Hypex modules that I have heard have been tonally cool & analytical with meat missing from the bone. Perhaps the examples that I have heard have had impedance mismatching issues, but the sound signatures were completely opposite ends of the spectrum from a tube amp with tone, spatial presentation, decay, and fatness of the sound.
    Anyway, I hope you get to review the NAD 3020D V2. A NAD design goal was to voice it the same as the original 3020.

    Sean
    Good work as ever on this this.I bought the Stellar DAC to replace old 80's Apogee DAC and a MCintosh C712 pre for my buddy and I have listemed to the amps.So here's my take.First one thing you missed I thought was that one can cut price down to $2800 (lower street as one mentioned PS MSRP are way above real sale price you can get) is you only need 140 wpc with S300 amp.The Stellar DAC though as a DAC is very good close to Class A Mytek or Schiit Yggy.The preamp functions well enough to be a viable alternative for someone looking to get a better one (I was thinking Schiit Frey all the way to a $5K Rogue,Aesthetic Calypso,Parasound JCP2 etc)..That said I think that a DAC at $1700 not having MQA or being a Roon endpoint even if it does DSD256 will cost them.I think McGowan might not haven wanted to take sales from himself but he's going to lose people to lesser sounding Parasound P6 or NAD C658.Your take on the amps was very good and I think you would agree it's all coming together for many implementing Class D.Cost per watt,less heat and now with better sound if done right it's viable alternative to AB.I might get the stack myself.You were right on with comparison to Parasound (I haven't heard the amp but I have heard P6 vs PS Stellar) and you are getting better sound (with taste caveats you mention I guess with amps) but cost of PS as a stack is also a concern of mine.Heard interview Fremmer did with engineer who designed their phono.It will be a 2 input affair with Stellar styling at $2K target price.Then they are coming out with a streamer.One thing you review didn't mention was inclusion of a I2S input PS proprietary which all of them are since there is no one standard) allowing for separate clock and data streams.Will it improve the potential function of streamer/DAC?Dunnoh above my pay grade.But that I think McGowan said will be $2K range.And they have a a Stellar Power regenerator already for sale at $2K.So will the S300/phono stack be worth $7K or the M700 combo $8K?Add another $2K for a power regenerator?You look at the Elac stack which is $2500 for the pre/DAC AND streamer and $1K for the phono and a stereo/mono amp that does 350/650 wpc at $1500 you could go with a $5K or $6500 set up.Parasound P6 will again imho not match PS but what price glory?For me the lack of MQA and Roon is a serious oversight and though a good line you are knocking on door of next level products.To me good value but then you look at Schiit and well that's an off the charts value pre-wise.Who knows if NAD can get that C658 through teething problems early on but so far it is a bridge too far (amazing if it delivered though).There are other options and the Stella while not worthy of the hype that it's gotten.It is not the game changer say the Kef LS50 was.

    I enjoy both yours, Steve G's (reading him since pre CNET/RUclips days), and Record Store Day Dan's RUclips pages. I totally understand your impressions and comparisons between the PS Audio & Parasound amps. Hell, I was gonna buy two ICE Amps off of Parts Express and integrate them into one chassis with my Resto-Modded 1968 Bose 901's with my personally modded Bose Series 2 EQ. The cost of those amps plus chassis, wiring, and back panel connectivity would have only saved me always on$1500 compared to the Stellar Stack in your review.
    Along with my Sony STR-DN1080 and true Balanced XLR's that I hacked out of the HDMI PCB which also bypasses the Sony's volume control. I use a Sony UBP-X1000ES as a Universal Disc Transport and HiRes audio and video streamer. They integrate exceptionally well with my Stellar Stack (SGCD/Preamp & 2x m700's) same as what you reviewed here but in Black.
    My impressions are different than yours. While I do "color" my system with the Bose Series 2 "Dog's Breakfast" EQ. It's the secret sauce combined with the m700's tendancy to highlight the midrange at louder volume. I hear this too (as did you) at higher volume levels. Since I'm an apartment dweller, I play at low volume but once in a while "crank it". When I do that, I dial back the Bose EQ but leave the SGCD/Preamp's filter #1 always on. I hear Deep Bass down to 30Hz, very clean not to "shouty" mids, and a top end that's amazing at low level volume, and when the EQ is dialed back, does not at all sound like "no high, no lows...it must be Bose". I'd rented a Crown XTi2002 for testing the Sony XLR breakouts that I hacked prior to my PS Audio shipment's arrival. It sounded pretty damn good. A sound that I assume would approach the Parasound you reviewed with the SGCD/Preamp. I played the Crown amp through my volume bypassed Sony DN1080 (used the Crown's level control/Crown EQ set to "Flat").
    The Stellar Stack is the best I can afford to own and love it's sound on my rig. I used to be big on Adcom until my GFA-555II caught fire (long story - my fault actually).
    You do excellent work Sean and thank you for confirming what I suspected but did not want to publish on any forums (especially PSA's) until I watched your review. Hey, even Uncle Steve said we are allowed to use EQ no matter how big or small our rigs cost.
    Happy 4th to you & your family Bro !

Just one note: several times in the video, you used the term “linear” when I believe you meant to say “flat frequency response” - meaning no relative amplification nor attenuation of frequency bands across the spectrum. Linear is a time-domain rather than frequency domain term and refers to the output being a faithful multiple of the input signal. Best of luck with continuing to grow your channel. Frank

    You can spend $4,000 on this Class D setup, which is admittedly very good, or spend $1,000 to $1,500 to get a really nice lightly-used Class A or AB preamp and power amp. I'm thinking Adcom GFA-5500 or similar. Sure, it's "only" 200 WPC @ 8 ohms, but who needs more than that for 2 channel? The PS Audio setup wins when it comes to form factor, power consumption, and heat output. The Class A/AB setup will win for everything else. The used market is where it's at right now.

    • @ZeroFidelity
      @ZeroFidelity  5 лет назад +3

      Honestly, class-D has been good for a long time. Over 10 years ago, Panasonic released a slim receiver that sounded more like a class-a amplifier than a class-d amp, and it only cost around $350 USD. Sony had an all-in-one SACD/Integrated amp that provided an insane amount of clarity and control for under $1000. Hell, my favorite class-D amp is a modified H20 Signature 100, which uses a B&O ICE module that's over 10 years old! I think what's changing now is the fact that class-D is no longer as hit-or-miss as it used to be. That's a good thing! The line that has historically separated the 'Class-D' sound from the conventional 'Class A/B, Class A' transistor sound has become blurred. Still, I think most class-D implementations retain that signature cool tone and slightly thin midrange. Something that should be easy to identify for experienced listeners with a good set of ears - even in a proper blind ABX test.

    - First and foremost you sit too close to the camera.
    - The “intros/pauses” such as "caveats" are only a few seconds, which is too short to be useful.
    The analysis is better than the presentation of it.
    Anyway, that's my impressions.
    Keep up the good work!

    Thanks for the good/honest review, I have been debating on giving a pair of their m700’s a try along with their direct stream dac and this really helps me move forward with my purchase. I took a tour of PSAudio a few weeks back on vacations and was really impressed. Were the m700’s new or did they have a bunch of hours to break in as many state they sound better after use. The store I have been talking with offered the equipment at 30+ % off msrp!

      Correct. Yesterday was a very rough day and I was completely off my game. Could I have re-filmed that section? Sure. And I probably should have, but I decided to upload anyway so I can move the eff on. And no, nobody instructed me to keep the lids down. I didn't showcase the inside of the gear because there's nothing interesting to see. Felt it would be a waste of time and wanted to focus more on the performance.

    Interesting and trustworthy, as usual. I am more than curious what speakers you used to listen to these? Reason is, I am finding so much difference between the -- let's call them interfaces -- between speakers and power amplifiers. I think it means so much to the ear. Were your speakers relatively inefficient boxes, current hungry Maggies, or the "let's go run and play" like Klipsch's?
    I'm not being critical. I'd just like one or two more points of calibration.
    Thanks for all you do.

    Good review; I would like to mention that the headphone is a 1/4 inch plug, not a 1/8 inch one. I have the DAC preamp and running it through a McIntosh MC2200 200wpc amp with KEF LS50’s. Some people might find the combination a tad bright but maybe the Mac tones down what could be unacceptably so. I would like to hear your thoughts on this pairing with your Buchardts. Oh, and I’d also like to mention the excellent customer service I’ve experienced with PS Audio. They sent me a new IC chip to fix a problem with the Mute function not working when I wrote to them on their webpage. Paul wrote me back and had me call them directly to resolve the issue.

    My only problem with PS Audio is that the watts shown on the page shows only the 4 ohm value. They say it's because most modern speakers are in the 4 ohm category. The newbie will see 1200 watts and say that's a lot of power. It is, but when they buy 8 ohm speakers, they are getting 600 watts. Sort of not telling the whole truth. Makes it sound better.

      @@stevec5465 The impedence constantly fluctuates so many speakers that say they are 8 ohm can be more around 4 ohms anyway. We are currently evaluating this fine combo: (www.thesoundadvocate.com)
    Initial impressions confirms the monoblocks class D modules used to be exceptionally “neutral” and masterfully detailed, powerful and rich as are many of the latest class D units we’ve reviewed; (E.G- www.thesoundadvocate.com/equipment-reviews/amplification/)
    Some of these newest Class D amps can, arguably, rival the best ClassA-A/B audiophile amplifiers currently available.
    Your listening notes regarding the Preamp/DAC, however, can be confidently taken to heart. It most likely concerns the DAC that PS Audio has Decided on which can definitely take on some characteristics displaying a Slightly ‘sharper’ tonal balance when using excellent program sources . Indeed, not as neutral as we’ve come to observe compared to combos and separates by Peachtree, AVM, wyred4sound , CIA ......(see review at above link) to name a few.
    However, as it stands now , the Monoblocks appear to be a product that can cause some considerable ENVY, from almost any esoteric audiophile amplifer manufactures- especially at its price points!!

      I know I will likely get negative comments for admitting this publicly - I have the SGCD preamp paired with the little Emotiva PA1 monoblocks and am currently THRILLED with the combo driving my Vienna Acoustics Mozart Grands. Balanced XLR to the PA1s sounds far superior to my Adcom 555 mkII monoblocks and my Anthem A5 amps. I was completely surprised for the $$$.

    Bought one of these to start upgrading my headphone/speaker game. Coming from the RME ADI-2 Dac Fs. At full retail, huge upgrade, but I took advantage of their trade-in program and got it for 1,275$(within 100$ of my previous unit.) Easy recommendation from me after auditioning equipment over months. It doesn't match many devices at twice it's price like some claim, but it's easy for me to say this unit punches above it's weight often. Easy recommendation from me and paired lovely with my LCD-X, ZMF Verite, and SVS Ultra towers.

      Right now the Gain Cell DAC is "on sale" for $1249. PS Audio's "TRADE IN" program is a scam. They have inflated their selling prices big time to allow for trade ins. Double win for them. You should offered PS Audio a lower price and they would have accepted. Then sell your piece. Paul is a scam artist.
