How clueless is Jason? He's referring to Liz and her kids as his family but that's Lucky's family. Remember Liz/Lucky/Jason all decided that Jake would be raised as Lucky's son. And of course, Liz swearing under oath that Jason was not Jake's father sealed the deal.
To Jason, family is who he chooses it to be. Maxie and Mike were attacked as was Sam. Sonny set off a huge chain of events, but he is still under Jason's protection. And even though they had such animosity, Sam was still important to him.

And legally Jake is Lucky's son Jason gave up his paternal rights who also raised him until he was supposedly killed at age 4.
