I'm also very impressed with what appears to be a total lack of "prejudgment", and your "well, there's the tests...you decide" conclusion. All that made your channel a lock for like & subscription--keep up the great work! On a side note: As I suspect many others were, I was shocked at how favorably the MTech compared to the Ontario. I would be extremely interested in a later, post hard-use second look to see if the former can maintain such solid performance.

Having owned both, well I gave away the MTech and still have the Ontario (actually I own 3 Ontarios). Put a good edge on the SP-6 and retest it. I’ll take the Ontario hands down.
Mtech blades are still underrated greatly, based on their Price & Origin. I don't believe I'd make an Mtech knife my Primary in any possible situation where my life may depend it. However, they certainly take the Backup role.
This was one of the best knife versus vids I have seen! Great job. I've got the older version Ontario SP1 with the 1095 steel and tan grip. It came sharp as a razor blade and at least as sharp as any knife I've ever gotten out of the box. It came with a sharpened swedge too. I was really impressed with that M-tech and might actually pick one up. I understand the quality is a little bit hit and miss though.
That is a great compliment brother. I try to make fair and unbiased videos. I wish they still made the Ontario in 1095 still. After the tests I sharpened up the SP6 and she is good to go now. To be fair I wanted to test the blades how they came. Pick the Mtech up if you need a cheap but decent beater blade. Thanks for the kind words my friend.
I think the Ontario is a sure win for dependability. You can always put a better edge on it. I am like you on the M Tec. Seems to be a good knife but I dont know if I would feel comfortable depending on it for long term use.
Well, goes to show the general loss of QC and performance of the steel due to the stock material change of Ontario Knives in the last few years. I'm glad that I got my SP-2 back in the Mid 90s. Thanks for the comparison!

I also have the mtech ( mostly for collection reasons ). I never really used . Can’t wait to watch the rest of this video . ( I have to write before I forget ). I’m known to do that . Great video and knife review. You guy's in American make me envious of what you can buy knives for, the Ontario is around $100 to $130 and the M-tec knife is around $50 dollar mark in Australia. I have the M-tec knife and have used it only a bit here and there and it's been ok for money paid, mine the guard is still tight no rattles. Never owned a Ontario but would think the U.S.A made knife would out last and probably have a better chance of warranty if it did break.
I have quite a few mtech blades and I have never had a problem, that being said I definitely would choose the Ontario because it's keeping my money in the states, but I will definitely buy mtech again, it's just what you're willing to pay,

For the money Mtech blades are very descent. Hey if they fail it's not like youre breaking the bank. Secretly I think most knife collectors have had a couple of Mtech blades they just don't wanna admit it. LOL! Have a good one my friend.

Oh one more thing I forgot to say … That little wiggle on the hand guard ???? A little Gorilla Glue works wonders haha 😂 Seriously… I had the same thing happen to my Hibben Magnum . It actually arrived like that . I put a little Gorilla Epoxy mix in between the guard and blade and I haven’t had a problem since . Keep in mind though ….. I have not used the knife in a while . I only used once to make the video and maybe one time after that to show my sons friend . ( he wound up buying the same knife which I thought was really cool … he only has 1 knife - keeps in his pickup truck - and it’s the Hibben Magnum . Not a bad blade to have . Especially if someone gives him a hard time and he whips that beast out for intimidating purpose haha 😂 Nothing like Good Ol Road Rage 😡 ( I keep the KaBar D2 Extreme plain edge in my pickup ). I call it my EDTC . ( Every Day Truck Carry ). Haha Ok . I’m going to go get another cup of coffee ☕️. It’s nasty out - the world is a mess . Just trying to stay positive 🤠
MT096 is a beast, but with re epoxying of my mtech 151 handle, it seems to fix the loose handle issure.. the 151 outchops the mt-096 by a wide margin. .almost as good as my cold steel trailmaster, but then again, that is because it is a clone of it..haha.
I have the SP695 in 1095 and don't own any MTech blades so I can only speak for the Ontario. I think it is also two different philosophies of use. The SP6 is identical to the OKC bayonet in blade shape and length. So I think it is meant to be a stabber and a good one at that. I did put a pretty sharp edge on mine including the spine edge. The factory edge from Ontario is always dull. It is a really wide edge so you have to work the steel to thin it out a bit. If you can get a hold of one, the discontinued Buck 650 Nighthawk is almost identical to the SP6 but it's 1/4" of 420HC and that thing is another excellent stabbing blade. I have a 1995 satin one and love it, especially for a river or ocean blade.
I like the comparison. You were a bit easy with the tip test since it was just on plywood. On hardwood, maybe a thick branch or log, the tips would have a much harder time since there's less give in the wood. The tips could even snap. I've seen other knife channels put the Mtech through a lot of abuse and it survives. They're also so cheap that I got one. I was messing around and once hit the blade edge of my Mtech on some tongs (cheap stainless dollarstore tongs) and the Mtech blade edge got chipped. I was so surprised. I shouldn't be since it's just 440A stainless steel.
I have an OKC SP6 Fighting Knife and an OKC SP10 Marine Raider Bowie. I also have an inexpensive MTech Xtreme tracker knife. I keep the MTech in the back of my truck. It's actually a decent knife for the price. The MTech USA knives aren't as good as MTech Xtreme knives. All that said, if I had to choose one knife for survival, it would obviously be the Ontario SP10 Marine Raider Bowie. That knife is built like a tank.
Great video! Thanks for posting this one... I used to own the MTech 096 and I gave it away to some one. For the price it's a great knife. Mtech does make a few great fixed blade knives. Yes, they are 440A or 420 for the steel. And YES once in a while, you'll find some out there that were not properly heat treated but again for a rough use knife they are useful. That black coating is kind of like cerakote and it will come off like you seen in your video. The MTech brand, is under the whole sale seller of Master Cutlery.. They make other brands as well like Elk Ridge, Tac Force from what I remember. They are a Chinese company and they also have two very large warehouse, one on the west coast and one on the east coast. Some there knives are more novelty but again like 096 there some good cheap ones out there. I work in certain fields of security assisting stakeholders and also carrying gear traveling to certain site loc's. I may buy this one again and keep in the trunk of my car in those states that it's legal to do so.
Really enjoyed this video. I love Ontario, that said it disappoints me the amount the quality has dropped in their grinds and blades. 10/15 years ago they were military quality and you couldn't beat them! Anyway... Chinese knives aren't really my thing but you make a mean comparison video brother!!✌️
Man that Mtech ain't no joke ,for a budget blade it's tough as granite and I own two of them Bad Boyz ,I own the Ontario SP 6 also so I disappointed,but not surprised the Mtech prove to be tougher fro cheaper even with the guard little issue. 🎯👍🎯
Cool testing. I've had the MT-096 before and it also was very sharp. TAC did an older, in-depth video on the MT-096 here on youtube and it's a pretty solid knife. It's also a copy of a more expensive knife, a Busse I think it was. It's also known that Ontarios are a hit or miss regarding out-of-the-box sharpness and quality but if you have the tools and skills to sharpen a knife, it is a solid knife and can be scary, razor-sharp. Stripping the coating off the blade also reduces friction when slicing and penetrating. The coating is also carcinogenic so if you use any of these knives for food prep, it is highly recommended to remove the coating. I recently bought another Ontario 498 Marine Combat knife, spent an entire weekend with whet stones sharpening and customizing this knife, and it is sharper than any Kabar I have ever owned. Anyway, good job and I enjoyed watching your video.
The Ontario does not have a guard to work loose. But my experience with Ontario has not been good, the temper is soft, around 54-55 RC which means its hard to get sharp and they can cost $60-80. I have bought MTech at $20 or less which work just fine, my latest one is 8cr13mov, really sharp, I keep it in the car. You cant beat Cold Steel SRK in SK-5 for a really great knife at bargain price.
I bought the MTech 096 on a lark after I had the clone of the trailer master they make. The 096 was sub par and I wouldn't trust it to not fail after use the guard on mine came loose like yours. The edge was butter knife dull. And with the design I would not say it is good as an outdoors knife.
You know, John, I'm all over cheap with quality. I can sharpen the Ontario, but I don't have the skill to fix the guard on the MTech. My choice would be the Ontario. I just don't want a broken knife. As cheap as I am, I'd prefer to spend a little more . Thanks for the review. You know I was rooting for the MTech tho.
I think your choice is a wise one. Ontario is a great quality knife. But if you wanted to just thrash a blade with no care of breaking it the Mtech would be a good one.
that guard is actually easy to fix, I cut a wooden wedge, hammer it in, snap it off, then cover with 2 part epoxy..SOLID now, and took like 5 minutes to fix..but then again, I started to make knives from scratch from coil spring..now that is hard.
The Ontario Sp 6 is a fighting knife. That said Ontario can be hit or miss with their "Out The Box" edges. Now "that said" I guarantee you, if you put an edge on that Ontario which is what they force you to do at times, you will find that it is a much better steel and better built overall knife. I think the Ontario Sp 1 was made for more survival/ bushcraft task. I will say that M tech is a pretty good budget Brand. But the Ontario once sharpened will last longer and is the better bang for your buck. Anyway, just my 2 cents, I appreciate your video! Thanx!

I would love to see a torture test of these two knives to see which one would break first. I think the ontario SP6 would probably win just from a steel and heat treat standpoint vs the made in china steel.
got the SP6 Mine is very sharp and that knife is more of a fighting knife have the M TECH 2 or 3 of them bad on one handles loose and thinking it is owned by Master Cutlery cheap knives.. the one in this vid. looks to be like a Bowie vs Tac / Survival
My thinking on this. First let me state I love ontario. If you are a weekend camper or outdoor person. Why spend a fortune on something you'll use a handful of times. I believe in the way I learned. Go into the woods then when you find you can't live without it buy it. A lot of stuff nowadays is a look what I have. It's more like brand name jewelry. I have a mtech 151 I love. I also have a ontario sp5 I love. Both are great knives. I use the 151 more because I don't care if I lose a $20. The ontario is not expensive by any means but $50 is still a heavy loss. The thing about ontario for me I don't expect them to have a good grind. Better materials. Really can't go wrong with either. I believe the ontario is worth the $25-30 more. When it gets $150-250 more are you really getting better or just branding. Coldsteel used to be amazing now $200 for 4034. How do you justify that. Especially when the recon scout was $250 for 3v. (I should have got that when midway had them $200 now they are over$300) Do you think 3v is worth the extra money? I've never owned any. Used some but never sharpened it. That is what stops me the story's about how hard it is.
I like your thinking. And yes I agree about the "look what I have" statement. Some people like to flaunt their expensive sharp toys. My moto is "If it works for you, use it". Like you I would rather use and abuse a cheap blade that cost $20 to $50 than one that cost $200. To be honest any knife can fail. No matter the material its made of or the cost. The Ontario is garbage. The same M-Tech you just tested survived an EXTREME torture test conducted about 7-9 years ago by a fella who lost his channel after demonstrating how an M-Tech out performed a Chris Reeve knife of equal size and similar design. The tests were designed to break the knife. The goal each respective blade was to reach the farthest into the series of tests before failure. The Reeve blade failed in either the late phase of stage one or early in stage two. The M-Tech made it to the sixth or seventh stage (it’s been years) before failure. The test that broke the M-Tech was when the tester placed the blade at low step ladder level wedged in between a large stack of bricks providing stability. He stepped on the handle and the knife held his weight without failure. Only after he began to bounce on the knife handle did the blade finally snap. Mr. Reeve didn’t care for the results and worked very hard to have the channel taken down based on some terms related to the test not being fair or scientific, blah, blah, blah. Bottom line he was butt hurt his $250.00+ product was outperformed indisputably by a Chinese mass produced knife that cost only $9.96 through Cheap’r than Dirt at that time. After watching that video and learning of Mr. Reeve’s response, I bought several M-Tech’s of this same model. M-Tech and M-Tech Extreme knives are far superior to many high dollar knives made in America or Europe. I don’t care where a knife is made if it is proven to be durable and trustworthy.
16 slashes with the Mtech to carve the same notch. Most OKC knives nowadays seem to have a very poor grind job. If you know how to do the work yourself, they're still great knives. Just shameful they have to be so poorly sharpened out of the box.
mtech 096 doesn't chop as well as the 151..but when it was on sale for $11.89, I think it is great deal..so bought 6 of them. Chop decent for the price.. 440a aint no joke, much better than 3cr13..hold ok edge. It isn't a fallkniven modern bowie(I have that one, by the way) with COS steel, but like he said, "for $15 dollars.." you can keep on in every room of your house, one in your yard, one in each of your cars.. I think is all around camp knife/fighting knife.
I haven't owned the M-Tech but I've got a few folders people have given me over the years. Some of them looked pretty cool but I've given most of them away. They'd make great beater knives for the toolbox for scraping gaskets and other things you wouldn't do with a good knife. I pretty much like most knives cheap or expensive. I just like some more than others.😊 Ontario knives use to be a lot better it seems. Pretty much all the new ones need to be reprofiled and stripped to perform their best imo. I'd definitely pick the SP6 for its intended purpose. It's not really designed to be a bushcrafters knife but it can still get the job done. The Marine Bowie cut down to the same shape as the SP6 with a thinned edge is like the SP6 on steroids. That and the SP53 are two of my favorites of that line. Cool video!
Mtech are good budget beater blades you can thrash without feeling guilty. And I agree about Ontario. Seems the quality has slipped a bit. I have a SP53 I am doing a review on in the near future vs the KaBar Bolo. Should be an interesting comparison. Thanks for sharing brother.
@@fit4knives882 I love my SP53 but I wasn't impressed when I first got it. It wasn't very sharp but it chopped fairly well after I sharpened it. It still wasn't living up to its reputation so I grabbed an aggressive file and went to work. After a couple hours I had it thinned up a bunch. Then I stripped it. I spent more than a few hours getting all the grinding marks and imperfections the coating was hiding till I could see my reflection. Then gave it a camouflage patina using vinager and mustard to resist rusting a little. I made a heavy duty leather sheath for it because I don't care for the one's they come with. Now it's one of my favorite choppers. I used it to limb two big oaks that a wind storm blew across my driveway and it'll take off wrist sized limbs in a few strokes and it took no rolls or chips even though the edge is way thinner now. 5160 is an awesome steel for such knives. It's better than 1095 for heavy chopping imo. I wish more companies would use it. Ontario did switch from 1095 to 1075 for most of their SP line I believe but I think the SP53 is still 5160. People were complaining about the switch but I'd rather have it over 1095 for chopping knives. I look forward to seeing your video comparing the Ontario and the KA-BAR.
Been into knife throwing since I was a kid. You know back in the day (1980's) when a kid could buy throwing stars (shurikens), throwing knives, spikes, ect. at the mall or flea market. I get lucky some of the time and surprise myself😆.
I agree the guard on the Mtech is a bit of a problem fixing due to the rubber over mold handle. Epoxy may help for a bit but not for long in my opinion. After the testing I sharpened the Ontario and it is good to go now.
You have an Ontario fighting knife comparing it to a 440 Bowie knife. That’s two completely different types of knives. And two knives I’d different quality grades. 😂
It sucks that Ontario has gotten so lax lately with sharpening their knives at the factory. But you still should have sharpened it before doing cutting tests against the Chi-com M-Tech because a sharp knife will always outperform any dull knife. So your test was not helpful at all.
I can say this, I have a Ontario pilot knife that has the worst quality control I've ever seen. Dull, dull, dull. I'm not a Chinese knife fan, but I have never bought one that was dull. I do believe handguards are the biggest drawback of Chinese manufacturing. Good test, thanks.
The swedge on the Ontario is sharpened, you could have stuck ferro rod with that. Also, when you flip the wood around to do feather sticks with the Mtech, the grain is now opposite and more difficult to feather. Throwing, chopping all favors the heavier knife. BTW, the guard coming loose means the tang is separating from the handle. The tang is probably just glued in on the Mtech, whereas the handle on the Ontario is molded around the tang. Your video was entertaining, though.
Trouble with US of A is that it is sooo biased towards its own production. Sure there are great knife makers out there. Like Ontario, like Strider. Yet those blades made in the Far-East cannot be good for certain, right? Those people have been making blades for thousands of years and even if they are made cheap they can be quality. Like for instance the Ontario: how much would it be if it was made in China? Look at Cold Steel. Does it in Taiwan. Then there are the Strider Clones. Sure, piece of crap like the original. Europeans actually realized that the framelock has to have an insert which can be replaced when worn. Strider forgot that, then said. Blade has to wear in, blah, blah. I have a few folders from various companies and none have had to wear in. I had a Chinese folder, linerlock. Bent the liner, then used a metal nail to straighten it. Works like new. So no complaints there. All in all, I guess the blade form is most important, then of course heat treat with any steel. Shit happens. But if China raises quality 20% price will go up. Will not cost 15 USD but 20. What about Ontario. If it raises quality, price will go up by 20%? No I guess much higher than that...

I agree. Mtech makes a good beater but Ontario are keepers. Yep some folks just don't want to spend 50 bucks (which is still inexpensive) on a blade.

MT-096 is a beast. Best chinese survival knife hands down. SP6 is absolutely still worth buying.
MT096 is a beast, but with re epoxying of my mtech 151 handle, it seems to fix the loose handle issure.. the 151 outchops the mt-096 by a wide margin. .almost as good as my cold steel trailmaster, but then again, that is because it is a clone of it..haha.
I didn’t get my SP6 for wood processing. But I’m glad to see it can handle it in a pinch.

I have the SP695 in 1095 and don't own any MTech blades so I can only speak for the Ontario. I think it is also two different philosophies of use. The SP6 is identical to the OKC bayonet in blade shape and length. So I think it is meant to be a stabber and a good one at that. I did put a pretty sharp edge on mine including the spine edge. The factory edge from Ontario is always dull. It is a really wide edge so you have to work the steel to thin it out a bit. If you can get a hold of one, the discontinued Buck 650 Nighthawk is almost identical to the SP6 but it's 1/4" of 420HC and that thing is another excellent stabbing blade. I have a 1995 satin one and love it, especially for a river or ocean blade.
I want to get the Nighthawk someday. So many people love that blade for good reason I'm sure. Thanks for sharing my friend.

I got the SP6 in 1095. I like both knives! MTech is not bad just those damn hollow grinds.
Hollow grinds are easy and cheap but like you I prefer other grinds.

I like the comparison. You were a bit easy with the tip test since it was just on plywood. On hardwood, maybe a thick branch or log, the tips would have a much harder time since there's less give in the wood. The tips could even snap.
I've seen other knife channels put the Mtech through a lot of abuse and it survives. They're also so cheap that I got one. I was messing around and once hit the blade edge of my Mtech on some tongs (cheap stainless dollarstore tongs) and the Mtech blade edge got chipped. I was so surprised. I shouldn't be since it's just 440A stainless steel.
Now do this. Use the crap out of them and revisit again in 6 months. I am currently testing long term on a Ontario SP2 and CFK knife

I have an OKC SP6 Fighting Knife and an OKC SP10 Marine Raider Bowie. I also have an inexpensive MTech Xtreme tracker knife. I keep the MTech in the back of my truck. It's actually a decent knife for the price. The MTech USA knives aren't as good as MTech Xtreme knives. All that said, if I had to choose one knife for survival, it would obviously be the Ontario SP10 Marine Raider Bowie. That knife is built like a tank.
Great video! Thanks for posting this one... I used to own the MTech 096 and I gave it away to some one. For the price it's a great knife. Mtech does make a few great fixed blade knives. Yes, they are 440A or 420 for the steel. And YES once in a while, you'll find some out there that were not properly heat treated but again for a rough use knife they are useful. That black coating is kind of like cerakote and it will come off like you seen in your video. The MTech brand, is under the whole sale seller of Master Cutlery.. They make other brands as well like Elk Ridge, Tac Force from what I remember. They are a Chinese company and they also have two very large warehouse, one on the west coast and one on the east coast. Some there knives are more novelty but again like 096 there some good cheap ones out there. I work in certain fields of security assisting stakeholders and also carrying gear traveling to certain site loc's. I may buy this one again and keep in the trunk of my car in those states that it's legal to do so.

I love Ontario, that said it disappoints me the amount the quality has dropped in their grinds and blades. 10/15 years ago they were military quality and you couldn't beat them! Anyway... Man that Mtech ain't no joke ,for a budget blade it's tough as granite and I own two of them Bad Boyz ,I own the Ontario SP 6 also so I disappointed,but not surprised the Mtech prove to be tougher fro cheaper even with the guard little issue. 🎯👍🎯

Cool testing. I've had the MT-096 before and it also was very sharp. TAC did an older, in-depth video on the MT-096 here on youtube and it's a pretty solid knife. It's also a copy of a more expensive knife, a Busse I think it was. It's also known that Ontarios are a hit or miss regarding out-of-the-box sharpness and quality but if you have the tools and skills to sharpen a knife, it is a solid knife and can be scary, razor-sharp. Stripping the coating off the blade also reduces friction when slicing and penetrating. The coating is also carcinogenic so if you use any of these knives for food prep, it is highly recommended to remove the coating. I recently bought another Ontario 498 Marine Combat knife, spent an entire weekend with whet stones sharpening and customizing this knife, and it is sharper than any Kabar I have ever owned. Anyway, good job and I enjoyed watching your video.

The Ontario does not have a guard to work loose. But my experience with Ontario has not been good, the temper is soft, around 54-55 RC which means its hard to get sharp and they can cost $60-80. I have bought MTech at $20 or less which work just fine, my latest one is 8cr13mov, really sharp, I keep it in the car. You cant beat Cold Steel SRK in SK-5 for a really great knife at bargain price.
I bought the MTech 096 on a lark after I had the clone of the trailer master they make. The 096 was sub par and I wouldn't trust it to not fail after use the guard on mine came loose like yours. The edge was butter knife dull. And with the design I would not say it is good as an outdoors knife.
You know, John, I'm all over cheap with quality. I can sharpen the Ontario, but I don't have the skill to fix the guard on the MTech. My choice would be the Ontario. I just don't want a broken knife. As cheap as I am, I'd prefer to spend a little more . Thanks for the review. You know I was rooting for the MTech tho.
I think your choice is a wise one. Ontario is a great quality knife. But if you wanted to just thrash a blade with no care of breaking it the Mtech would be a good one.
that guard is actually easy to fix, I cut a wooden wedge, hammer it in, snap it off, then cover with 2 part epoxy..SOLID now, and took like 5 minutes to fix..but then again, I started to make knives from scratch from coil spring..now that is hard.
The Ontario Sp 6 is a fighting knife. That said Ontario can be hit or miss with their "Out The Box" edges. Now "that said" I guarantee you, if you put an edge on that Ontario which is what they force you to do at times, you will find that it is a much better steel and better built overall knife. I think the Ontario Sp 1 was made for more survival/ bushcraft task. I will say that M tech is a pretty good budget Brand. But the Ontario once sharpened will last longer and is the better bang for your buck. Anyway, just my 2 cents, I appreciate your video! Thanx!

I would love to see a torture test of these two knives to see which one would break first. I think the ontario SP6 would probably win just from a steel and heat treat standpoint vs the made in china steel.
I usually test blades how they might be used. But I was tempted to test these until one failed.😁
got the SP6 Mine is very sharp and that knife is more of a fighting knife have the M TECH 2 or 3 of them bad on one handles loose and thinking it is owned by Master Cutlery cheap knives.. the one in this vid. looks to be like a Bowie vs Tac / Survival
My thinking on this. First let me state I love ontario.
If you are a weekend camper or outdoor person. Why spend a fortune on something you'll use a handful of times.
I believe in the way I learned. Go into the woods then when you find you can't live without it buy it.
A lot of stuff nowadays is a look what I have. It's more like brand name jewelry.
I have a mtech 151 I love. I also have a ontario sp5 I love. Both are great knives. I use the 151 more because I don't care if I lose a $20. The ontario is not expensive by any means but $50 is still a heavy loss.
The thing about ontario for me I don't expect them to have a good grind. Better materials.
Really can't go wrong with either. I believe the ontario is worth the $25-30 more.
When it gets $150-250 more are you really getting better or just branding.
Coldsteel used to be amazing now $200 for 4034. How do you justify that.

I like your thinking. And yes I agree about the "look what I have" statement. Some people like to flaunt their expensive sharp toys. My moto is "If it works for you, use it". Like you I would rather use and abuse a cheap blade that cost $20 to $50 than one that cost $200. To be honest any knife can fail. No matter the material its made of or the cost. The Ontario is garbage. The same M-Tech you just tested survived an EXTREME torture test conducted about 7-9 years ago by a fella who lost his channel after demonstrating how an M-Tech out performed a Chris Reeve knife of equal size and similar design. The tests were designed to break the knife. The goal each respective blade was to reach the farthest into the series of tests before failure. The Reeve blade failed in either the late phase of stage one or early in stage two. The M-Tech made it to the sixth or seventh stage (it’s been years) before failure. The test that broke the M-Tech was when the tester placed the blade at low step ladder level wedged in between a large stack of bricks providing stability. He stepped on the handle and the knife held his weight without failure. Only after he began to bounce on the knife handle did the blade finally snap.
Mr. Reeve didn’t care for the results and worked very hard to have the channel taken down based on some terms related to the test not being fair or scientific, blah, blah, blah. Bottom line he was butt hurt his $250.00+ product was outperformed indisputably by a Chinese mass produced knife that cost only $9.96 through Cheap’r than Dirt at that time.
After watching that video and learning of Mr. Reeve’s response, I bought several M-Tech’s of this same model. M-Tech and M-Tech Extreme knives are far superior to many high dollar knives made in America or Europe. I don’t care where a knife is made if it is proven to be durable and trustworthy.

16 slashes with the Mtech to carve the same notch. Most OKC knives nowadays seem to have a very poor grind job. If you know how to do the work yourself, they're still great knives. Just shameful they have to be so poorly sharpened out of the box.
mtech 096 doesn't chop as well as the 151..but when it was on sale for $11.89, I think it is great deal..so bought 6 of them. Chop decent for the price.. 440a aint no joke, much better than 3cr13..hold ok edge. It isn't a fallkniven modern bowie(I have that one, by the way) with COS steel, but like he said, "for $15 dollars.." you can keep on in every room of your house, one in your yard, one in each of your cars.. I think is all around camp knife/fighting knife.
I haven't owned the M-Tech but I've got a few folders people have given me over the years. Some of them looked pretty cool but I've given most of them away. They'd make great beater knives for the toolbox for scraping gaskets and other things you wouldn't do with a good knife. I pretty much like most knives cheap or expensive. I just like some more than others.😊
Ontario knives use to be a lot better it seems. Pretty much all the new ones need to be reprofiled and stripped to perform their best imo. I'd definitely pick the SP6 for its intended purpose. It's not really designed to be a bushcrafters knife but it can still get the job done.
The Marine Bowie cut down to the same shape as the SP6 with a thinned edge is like the SP6 on steroids. That and the SP53 are two of my favorites of that line.

Mtech are good budget beater blades you can thrash without feeling guilty. And I agree about Ontario. Seems the quality has slipped a bit. I have a SP53 I am doing a review on in the near future vs the KaBar Bolo. Should be an interesting comparison. Thanks for sharing brother.
@@fit4knives882 I love my SP53 but I wasn't impressed when I first got it.
It wasn't very sharp but it chopped fairly well after I sharpened it.
It still wasn't living up to its reputation so I grabbed an aggressive file and went to work. After a couple hours I had it thinned up a bunch. Then I stripped it. I spent more than a few hours getting all the grinding marks and imperfections the coating was hiding till I could see my reflection. Then gave it a camouflage patina using vinager and mustard to resist rusting a little.
I made a heavy duty leather sheath for it because I don't care for the one's they come with. Now it's one of my favorite choppers. I used it to limb two big oaks that a wind storm blew across my driveway and it'll take off wrist sized limbs in a few strokes and it took no rolls or chips even though the edge is way thinner now. 5160 is an awesome steel for such knives. It's better than 1095 for heavy chopping imo. I wish more companies would use it.
Ontario did switch from 1095 to 1075 for most of their SP line I believe but I think the SP53 is still 5160. People were complaining about the switch but I'd rather have it over 1095 for chopping knives.

Been into knife throwing since I was a kid. You know back in the day (1980's) when a kid could buy throwing stars (shurikens), throwing knives, spikes, ect. at the mall or flea market. I get lucky some of the time and surprise myself😆.
I disappointed with the edge on the Ontario and the durability of the mtech. I guess you can fix an edge, but the guard would be a harder fix.
I agree the guard on the Mtech is a bit of a problem fixing due to the rubber over mold handle. Epoxy may help for a bit but not for long in my opinion. After the testing I sharpened the Ontario and it is good to go now.
You have an Ontario fighting knife comparing it to a 440 Bowie knife. That’s two completely different types of knives. And two knives I’d different quality grades. 😂
Why not resharpen them yourself and retest.
Maybe the Ontario's didn't have a good edge out of the box.

It sucks that Ontario has gotten so lax lately with sharpening their knives at the factory. But you still should have sharpened it before doing cutting tests against the Chi-com M-Tech because a sharp knife will always outperform any dull knife. So your test was not helpful at all.

I can say this, I have a Ontario pilot knife that has the worst quality control I've ever seen. Dull, dull, dull. I'm not a Chinese knife fan, but I have never bought one that was dull. I do believe handguards are the biggest drawback of Chinese manufacturing. Good test, thanks.
The Mtec could be quick fail or 10 years of anticipation on failure. Either way I don’t like. I would go Ontario.
Ontario is a good choice for sure. Great blades as well as a great price.
The swedge on the Ontario is sharpened, you could have stuck ferro rod with that. Also, when you flip the wood around to do feather sticks with the Mtech, the grain is now opposite and more difficult to feather. Throwing, chopping all favors the heavier knife. BTW, the guard coming loose means the tang is separating from the handle. The tang is probably just glued in on the Mtech, whereas the handle on the Ontario is molded around the tang. Your video was entertaining, though.

Trouble with US of A is that it is sooo biased towards its own production. Sure there are great knife makers out there. Like Ontario, like Strider. Yet those blades made in the Far-East cannot be good for certain, right? Those people have been making blades for thousands of years and even if they are made cheap they can be quality. Like for instance the Ontario: how much would it be if it was made in China? Look at Cold Steel. Does it in Taiwan. Then there are the Strider Clones. Sure, piece of crap like the original. Europeans actually realized that the framelock has to have an insert which can be replaced when worn. Strider forgot that, then said. Blade has to wear in, blah, blah. I have a few folders from various companies and none have had to wear in. I had a Chinese folder, linerlock. Bent the liner, then used a metal nail to straighten it. Works like new. So no complaints there. All in all, I guess the blade form is most important, then of course heat treat with any steel. Shit happens. But if China raises quality 20% price will go up. Will not cost 15 USD but 20. What about Ontario. If it raises quality, price will go up by 20%? No I guess much higher than that...
