  • Checking out the Tapuino Reloaded that Edu Arana made and sent me. A nifty little device based on an Arduino emulating a C64/C16/VIC-20 Datasette. The "Reloaded" version is a reworked SMD flavor of the original. Best of all, the whole project is open source so you can make your own if you want to!
    You can buy the Tapuino Reloaded from Edu's Arananet: www.arananet.n...
    Here's the GitHub of the project with all files necessary to make the hardware yourself: github.com/ara...
    The original Tapuino project by sweetlimre is here: github.com/swe...

    It is really great gadget and easy to make. All you need is arduino nano, optoocupler, one resistor, LCD or OLED, few pins/connectors/sockets and dupont wires (all-in-all some 10$). I made one with vero board and other with my home made single layer PCB. I had to redesign the original PCB layout a little, to be easier to make at home. Original design is hard for the toner transfer and etching at home.

    BTW. I've done tape drive emulator on Arduino before but I am still struggling to make floppy drive emulator in AVR. It works fine in ARM and FPGA but it's kind of difficult to do in AVR (not enough memory for a track).

    • @electronash
      @electronash 6 лет назад +1

      pvc
      Try an ESP32. ;)
      I think they have 512KB of SRAM, and the dual-core 240 MHz CPU. Usually only around £4-5 now.
      They should have plenty enough IO pins for a floppy emu. Would still require input buffers and open-drain drivers, of course.
      I believe they do also support 4-bit SDIO for talking to the SD card, but that may take more tweaks to get working, and of course not necessary for a floppy emu.
      I was attempting to read from a floppy drive using FPGA (DE1 board) last year. It was the first time I'd ever really worked with MFM decoding, and it hurt my brain for a while. lol
      it made it a lot easier after I wrote a quick spreadsheet that listed all of the valid byte-to-MFM values though.
      I also added some cells where I could input the data bits between the clock pulses, and it would generate the correct MFM word and data byte.
      The FPGA reader was intended to be hooked up to an 8" floppy drive for reading some Quantel Paintbox disks, but I couldn't reliably even read a standard 3.5" PC format floppy.
      The hardest part seemed to be knowing when to start shifting in the bits so I could lock on to the MFM words correctly.
      It would work about 30% of the time as the disk rotated, so I don't really know what the main issue was.
      In the end, somebody kindly offered to loan us a Kryoflux. lol
      Most of the 8" disks where just font disks, so no real exciting images nor logos from the BBC in the 80s or 90s, sadly.
      Rather than reinvent the wheel, would it be worth porting the FlashFloppy firmware to the ESP32 or other device?
      Or are you doing it mainly for the technical challenge? :p
      I may be attempting the MFM thing again soon, but this time for a big "SMD" hard drive (see the spin-up vid on my channel).
      This is part of yet another Paintbox related thing, to try to recover the images from its original giant Fujitsu "Eagle" hard drive, which has a far scarier 1MB/s data rate.
      Hopefully the MFM it spits out will be cleaner and more repeatable than a floppy drive, though. The NEC drive is just to experiment on, but at only £40 on eBay, I couldn't resist. lol

    Only thing I'm not liking with the Tapuino is the pressure it's putting down on the socket when you press the buttons, not sure I'd be happy with that! if they could put more reactive buttons on or front mount them (so you can put your fingers on the back to support it), I think I'd be happier :)

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 лет назад

      Thanks mate! Feels good to be back! :)
      I agree. The pressure on the board and connector is about the only downside to the form factor. That being said, you can of course attach an extension cable or something to prevent that.

    I have one of these but its got a 2x16 display, and has a case that looks like a C2N that went through the spin dryer and shrunk. Good for showing friends who boast about their game load times on their whiz bang pcs what it was like in the 80's :)
    I also thought Novaload was rather amusing when it first opens the grey and black screen and makes all the squeaks and pops before the game title screen appears. You missed it as you forgot to turn your speakers on until after the turbo loader had loaded

    Hi,
    Could you please tell me the model or where you got your SD card connector? That's the hard part to find!
    I found your Github (github.com/arananet/Tapuino-Reloaded/blob/master/bom.txt) and some of the details I am not sure of in the BOM w/r/t gerberb v0.3 of your board.
    1) Is the LP298XS taking in 5V and has a 3.3V output to drive the LCD? Also, the BOM says it's a SOT23-5 package, but your board does not say so. In fact, your board is using something like the LM117 regulator.
    2) The SOIC 16-pin 74HC4050D. Is that wider version or normal version of SOIC?
    3) OK2 is the opto-coupler chip?
    4) And, of course, you don't post the code. Is this truly an open-source project?
    Would be great if you could clarify the above for C64/VIC-20 enthusiasts to make use of your open source project.
    Thanks!

  •  6 лет назад

    I worry a bit that pressing does buttons cause some damage after enough time of usage, as it pushes the whole PCB+connector down every time. However the mentioned case may helps. Yeah, and welcome back, some channels even copies the "Jedi hand move" (at least how I name it, don't mean offensive, I like it) of introducing with "Hi, it's Jan Beta" :)

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 лет назад

      Yeah, that's about the only downside to this Tapuino version I could see, too. I'm not so sure about the case. Edu mentioned one in a tweet but I couldn't find it. I'll have to ask him about it.
      The Jedi comparison is flattering. ;)

    •  6 лет назад

      I thought a case for this sweetie which has mechanical support by fitting into the C64's case precisely (or would have "legs" downwards to the table) would help to stabilize things. However then, it should be a specific case for C64 (even for breadbin/new style in case of the "legs"), and probably others for other computer tapuino is compatible with. Though, I am still wondering why there are settings mode for C64/C16/etc, I had the assumption that cassette port behaves the same on all Commodore machines ...

    Do you know of any DYI-/OPenSource hardware that emulates 1541? Kind of like the Ultimate II+, but you can build it your self?

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 лет назад

      Yes, the SD2IEC hardware/software is open source. There's a variety of different versions floating around the web.

    I can't find a feature list, but it would be cool to be able to do a LOAD "$" and get back a directory of games on the SD card. Not sure if there is enough logic back and forth between the tape drive and the C64 to load a specific file without loading through them all.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 лет назад

      I think there are devices that can do that. This just pretends to be a datasette for the C64 so there's probably no way of seeing a directory from the computer side.

      Yeah, G'n'G is a reeeeally hard game to play. I rarely get any further than the first "angel" enemy thingy. :/

    • @RDJ134
      @RDJ134 6 лет назад

      i used to play it all round till it started again, these days with luck i get past to first two stages. Still a great game even when it is so hard. And the kids today complaining about theire 4k reso 7.1 dolby atmos games, in our time things were more difficult!!. Well i start to sound like a old fart now. /waving the walking stick.

    it is strange that they did not go for an ESP8266 platform with integrated cursor buttons and OLED like the WeMos D1 Esp-Wroom-02

    • @JanBeta

      Maybe they chose the cheaper option? (Just guessing obviously...)

    Why is the brand logo on the tv half covered up

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 лет назад

      I tend to cover up logos sometimes because I don't like inadvertently advertising stuff. In this case I covered it up half way and thought it would be funny to leave the word "LIPS" as a joke.

    Do you know something like this for a floppy drive by chance? Does such a device exist?

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 лет назад

      Yes, there's the SD2IEC. It's open source also and there's a variety of different flavors available. It emulates a standard 1541 without much support for fastloaders (only a few chosen ones work). If you need cycle exact floppy drive emulation, I'd recommend the 1541 ultimate.

    Welcome back Jan! How does the Tapuino work when you need to rewind the "tape" like for example in Turrican?

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 лет назад

      Thanks! I think you would just have to select the TAP file again and it would start from the beginning. The motor sense line is connected and working just like on a real datasette so the c64 can stop/start the "tape" itself.

    Hey Jan. Good to see you're back.
    Could this little device help me "rip" my tape images from actual tapes?

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 лет назад +3

      Thanks! I can't think of a way to use the tapuino for ripping tapes. Might be there's some clever way of doing it though. I successfully ripped some tapes using WAV2TAP on a PC and a hifi cassette deck in the past.

    • @TheHighlander71
      @TheHighlander71 6 лет назад +2

      Of course! I should give that a try. I think there was a device called audiotap. In theory, your device should be able to connect to a datasette (converter required) and record the audio. Which would be a stellar idea with so many tapes still around!

    • @damienretro4416
      @damienretro4416 6 лет назад +2

      Easiest way is with a 1541 Ultimate II+ (with tape adaptor.) It's a bit expensive though but it's very simple and produces pristine recordings and backups.

    • @SmoothEmJay
      @SmoothEmJay 6 лет назад +1

      As Damien has already said, you can do this with the Ultimate II, which you own already. Doh.

    • @TheHighlander71
      @TheHighlander71 6 лет назад

      Yeah, the tape adapter. I know it exists, I just don't know what it does. I've always thought the tape adapter was to load .TAP images to the tape interface of the commodore. Not to load actual tapes to the Ultimate....I'll have another look at it. Thanks!

    First, welcome back! I think this is more like Jan Beta Reloaded. A great post-hybernation video. I've never seen this Tapuino in action - a very nifty design - the little OLED screen is cute and handy.
    Also. I like the new lab setup, a nice and bright improving the video quality, as well, or is that the new camera? Great work.

      I had the feeling the tapuino was slightly faster than an actual datasette actually. I'm going to make a comparison when I get the chance.

    Is it just me or is the Tapuino actually slower than the original Dataset?

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 лет назад +1

      I had the feeling it was a tad faster (as I mentioned I made a tape from the exact Ghost'n'Goblins TAP file) than a real one but I might be mistaken. Will do a comparison as soon as I get the chance.

  • @GabrielAndroczky

    Actually, tape is "so lo-fi", that a tape recording using Dolby-S can be better quality than a CD if the proper recording equipment and decent quality tape is used... I was really surprised about this.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 лет назад +1

      Was it Techmoan who did a video about that? You are absolutely right. High end tape can sound pretty decent although it still needs a lot of tricks. ;)

    I have a question. 🙋‍♂️
    I have this set up for a c64. How easy is it to change my tapiuno to a c16 drive?
    Ps. Life goes on. You owe us nothing ❤

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 месяцев назад

      Using the tapuino with a C16 should technically just be a matter of making an adapter for the mini DIN connector that the C16 uses for the datasette. The devices are exactly the same, just with a smaller connector. The original Commodore datasettes came with an adapter at one point in time, even. :)

    And this device looks brilliant. I wish the SD2IEC had this kind of usability with the screen etc.
    You said there was a case available?

      Thanks mate! There actually is an option to connect a display to an SD2IEC if I remember correctly. Would be really interesting for disk changes and the like. Edu tweeted about a case a while back but I was unable to find it. I'll have to ask him where to get it.
