I had the 70s Barbie Dreamhouse. It looked really beautiful. It took hours for my mother to build it before Christmas. My sister and I played with it for a few weeks, then lost interest. My cat took possession of the abandoned real estate. He set up house on the ground floor and made it his bedroom. His name was Velvet. The house became Velvet's Dream House.
As a woman in a wheelchair, the elevator really warms my heart more than anyone could realize. My child self would've felt so seen by this! I love that she's talking about it... :)
I LOVE how Whitney breaks down what style the houses/furniture are and identifies designer pieces. I’ve always admired fashion and architecture students for being able to identify styles and specific designer pieces like that
I grew up with this giant book that had Barbie’s 50 year history. All these homes were in it, so it’s crazy to see them in reall scale and next to a person! Wow, this is doing so much for my inner child 🥹
100 year history? Girl, I'm happy for you but Barbie was literally introduced to the market wayback 1959. Queen Elizabeth II was born in 1926 and when she died she's only 95 or 96. I'm kind of puzzled but ok.
The 1960s one appeared in "Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse" as a playhouse that Barbie, Ken, Stacie, and Skipper tried to make for Chelsea. The 1990s one is the actual playhouse Chelsea makes for herself.
I LOVE THAT AD DID THIS! It's incredible the amount of research and architectural references they comment on here! one of my favorite episodes for sure!
this is amazing. please do more with other merch, like the townhomes, kitchens, campers, etc. they were all so well articulated--that's why I loved barbie so much (and still do)!
I would binge watch a full docu-series about this and it would heal my inner child! Congrats to the marketing team and whatever Barbie dream life spell they've put us under.
As someone who has an architecture degree, may I say I appreciated this video so much! The subject matter let’s itself be used in a theory of design class!
I had a Barbie magic house (which is waaaay smaller), without any kitchen in it - just a bed, a bath and a vanity. Totally gave me unrealistic expectations about adult's life, but I won't blame them ; thanks for making me live the dream of just sleeping and putting makeup on.
I really wanted that book she wrote but it was a limited edition that sold out quickly. I had the 79 Dream House and it was truly the most amazing toy I ever owned. It was beautiful and stylish and epic for a girl. I ended up giving it and the furniture and my Superstar camper van to a friend back in 1984. KInd of wish I still had those now but don't have the room for them.
you study to become a historian, do a masters in architectural history and your phd on barbie architectural history. no one told you because you have to invent it yourself
The 60s one is SO chic! I love the simplicity of it :) The most memorable dream house for me was the 1998 one that I think was pink and had a blue roof? And again was massive!
Only doll housed I've had are the fisher pice one and the Ever After High castle. (And the one my grandpa made for my mom. I'm slowly buying those little animal dolls for it because it's the perfect size). But one of the girls in school had the open one (no walls, just pillars) that was like three stories tall. Always envied her for that. That was in the late 90s very early 2000s.
Now do the campers. I never got a barbie house but I had two campers with the pop-out tent. Then do the plane and everything else. I can't get enough!! I'm obsessed!
would love for whitney to talk through a beginner’s guide to american architecture design of the ages - this was already teaching me so much about the styles i like and giving me references and names to jot down for when i’m looking at homes
I could not love this video more, thank you AD. My two favs architecture and history and barbie thrown in. This expert is amazing I could watch her on every house
OMG, seeing the 90's mansion dream house gave me so much goosebumps!! I had all those furniture and that pink sofa is a sofa-bed, at least mine was. Wow, I really miss it. If they bring it back I would totally buy it!
Yes, I had the sofa set & my sister had the dining table. I wish our parents had gotten us the house. I would totally buy it now if they did a reproduction of it.
omg. My older cousin had that A-frame. I remember being very small and playing with it with my barbies. I remember the feel of the plastic, even the sound the yellow doors made when you opened them. :)
Superb! Also enjoying reading about people's (bitter) sweet memories in the comments. Well done, AD, well done, Barbie's PR and marketing, heck, and Mattel!
Well done AD! The 1990s Mansion definitely about status obsession of the 80s and 90s. It also has a lot of Laura Ashley touches with the wall paper and borders, lol.

I still have the A-frame house (buried in the garage), but I guess it's a more updated version. The accents are a lighter shade of pink instead of yellow. The furniture in the traditional dollhouse also brings back some memories. It was like a little Barbie neighborhood in our playroom. Fun times.
I love the original Barbie dream house. I remember playing with it in my grandmother's basement growing up and would honestly buy it if Mattel re-released it!
the 90s dreamhouse to me is really reminiscent of those suburban mansions. for example, the choice of the doric columns made me think of cher´s house in clueless or regina george´s in mean girls
I had the 90s Barbie house.. I remember the sofa would turn into a pull out bed..and you could even turn the lights on and off. I still love it as an adult! 😍
the progression of "the first barbie house portrayed leaving tradition behind to be an independent and educated woman," to "so barbie's a DJ now," is sending meee
I remember having a Barbie dream house with a staircase that had a tiny platform with a stand to rest the doll while you wind it and pretend she’s walking down the stairs by herself. There was a laundry basket on the second floor bathroom that connected directly to the kitchen below for washing. It also had a removable bedroom on the top floor. Gosh I loved it so much
This is so dope❣️ Mies Van Der Rohe and the Eames couple are my favorites and I knew they were inspo for Barbie for I always wanted her house in the 90s
I actually have all the furniture in this 90s house in a box somewhere! so fun to see! I think my house is a later edition though, it has a pink lift in it ☺️
Barbie promotional material is unbeatable
I completely agree
Barbie has the best promotional material for a movie.
Of course, its the promotion of Capitalism itself! 🥰🤪🥰🤪🥰🤪
Of course, its the promotion of Capitalism itself! 🥰🤪🥰🤪🥰🤪
the marketing team for this movie knows what they are doing! Outstanding marketing campaign. I have never seen a better marketing for a movie.
Pleaseee do the hour-long version of this video with ALL the houses everyone would definitely adore it
I agree! I especially want to see 60s & 70s versions of the dream houses. I thought they actually had the most character
Yes this please!
YES PLEASE
TOTALLY AGREE that or she needs to do a series! I would watch so many of these!!!
I was so sad it jumped 2000s 😭
Barbie architectural historian? Dream-freaking-job!
the job your teachers tell you, doesn't exist yet...RAD.
the candidates for the position were like 3.

Too cool to see this! Makes my Friday a blast! Fold and fun and I had the Pink House 🌸💕🌸💕🌸💕🌸💕

LMAO!! 😂
🤩 AMAZING
So your mom worked all night to make the cat a house. 😂
@@Cheesycat948 Yes! My Grandmother would tell her that she got the cat a live in doll house
Honestly, her name (Velvet) was so apt. The 70s certainly wasn't lacking for velvet!
I suddenly understand my interior design aesthetic.
AD is crushing the Barbie content game.
💘💘💘
As a woman in a wheelchair, the elevator really warms my heart more than anyone could realize. My child self would've felt so seen by this! I love that she's talking about it... :)
One of the Barbies in the movie uses a wheelchair! She's in the near-background in a couple scenes!
@@1000huzzahs I know!!! I’ve immediately spotted her and was so happy. Her pink wheelchair was everything! 🩷✨

I would love a longer version of this video that goes through more of the houses.😊
The 1990 dream house is stunning 😍
it looks very nouveau riche

Kind of makes me hope that the writers of Barbie LITDH were involved in the making of the movie.
The Barbie marketing team will need to hibernate after all of this promo ..... they are on Overdrive 🎀
Foreal it's exhausting!!
please give Whitney Mallett a series where she just drags modern mcmansion homes.

My careers advisor at school did NOT tell me about this. I feel hard done by.

I had 2000 barbie dream house. the purple victorian one with the elevator. it was my prized possession
The 1990’s mansion is incomparable. Simply exquisite and I believe one of the priciest on the market.
90s to mid 00s was barbie at its peak. The detail and quality was top notch then around 2009 the quality dropped so much
whoever came up with this video idea needs a raise 😆
Now I know what "Board & Batten" means. Also, this video piqued my curiosity about the descriptions of different era of Barbie's homes. I love it!

The very first barbie house is much more creative and cute for its time than I expected. Pleasantly surprised, child me would've loved it 😊
When you see the doll house you have and can't stop smiling yeah you made the best purchase ever 1979....
