24K Cuban Link Chain 1 Year Later and Burnishing

  • Take a look at this 24 karat gold cuban link chain about one year after purchase. This chain has been worn almost daily, and still has a great shine, but seeing my brand new cuban link bracelet next to it made it obvious that the chain was in need of some love.
    I purchased some 1/8" stainless steel shot and burnishing compound for my tumbler and let it run for two 5 minute cycles. There was a big difference before and after in the shine factor, so this method is highly recommended by me.
    A secondary benefit of the burnishing process is that it work hardens the surface, helping to prevent new scratches from forming.

    I started working silver a few months ago and just started working with gold. As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing like 24k gold for that deep, rich color.
    As far as burnishing, you could buy an agate stone specifically designed as a burnishing tool. You lay your chain flat, put some dish soap on it, and rub the stone up and down the length. It really shines up the piece.

    Having the 24k look a little scuffed looks better in my opinion gives it depth and it also makes it look a lot more real like you dug it straight from the ground.

    • @atlasargentum7019

      I think it depends on the piece and the person wearing it. I'm not going to lie, after burnishing the chain, I was pretty excited with how much of the shine was restored. If I had a plain ring or different style of chain, such as an anchor link, I'd be fine with a few marks on them for character.
      Do you like pieces with a hammered finish?

      No, it's still 100 grams and I've done it twice. I'm sure it's possible to lose some weight eventually. Even if I lost a 10th of a gram every time it was burnished, I would still do it because it really helps to brighten the chain up and it would only be something I'd do once or twice a year.

More then 15yrs old lost some of its yellow, see the welds now. Couse gold solder has a different tarnish. I think a thief would give it back, saying whats this old crap😂

    Hello, does it get scratched easily? I don't see how it can if it's only around your neck?
    Also, bow would you clean it to keep it's shine and luster without having to polish it? As polish tends to make an item lose gold

    • @atlasargentum7019
      @atlasargentum7019  2 года назад +1

      It can get scratched easily, but you are right that it's not easy to do because it's on the neck. I just try to make sure I don't roll around on concrete or put a barbell across it while wearing it.
      You can clean it in warm water with some dish soap in it to remove gunk, but that will only help so much. I've burnished the chain twice in the past year and it still weighs 100g. If it were to lose gold from that process, it is probably a miniscule amount. You can't polish 24k because it has a tendency to smudge instead of polish. Some viewers also recommended talking it to a jeweler and having them hit it with a torch, but I cannot vouch for this method.

      If I went with 24 inches, it would have been claspless. I could have gone up to 7mm if my budget was right, but 6mm is a good size. I don't feel like it's too small because the yellow color of 24k makes it stand out. I know you can get 24k from Miami, but the price was right at 9999GJ at the time so I went for that. I have heard that 9999GJ's prices have increased since then. As for purity, I could have gone as low as 18k and probably still been happy, but the 24k looks so good to me.

      Thank you. And yes, for all the exact reasons why I want a 6mm , 24k. Perfect everyday size and wear. Clapless and no weak point, no need fumbling just slip on and off, Plus I hate shifting the clasp to the back all the time. Looks unbalanced and draws unnecessary attention. Purity is paramount for me, especially being at the beach all the time. When I say everyday I really meant 24/7 sun up till sun down. Since it's only 6mm why not get the highest karat you can afford, right? I mean, it's pretty hefty for it's size, right?

      Very helpful man! I am looking at a 24k gold chain so this info might come in hand some day. Thanks for the informative video.
      It seems to me like gold is going to be shiny and bright no matter what you do, but it is more brilliant when the surface is all lined up together. What did it look like before you tumbled it? Was it still bright ?

    • @atlasargentum7019
      @atlasargentum7019  Год назад +1

      24k always has the bright yellow color. I'm always a bit shocked by the color when I see a candid picture of myself wearing it. Over time it will lose its shine though and take on a more dull appearance. I personally don't mind much because it's part of owning 24k jewelry, but it is nice to freshen it up every now and then. I've heard other people say that you can hit it with a torch to return the shine, but my instinct tells me that tactic would anneal the metal and it would lose its work hardening. Also, I haven't lost any weight on the chain in all of the times I've tumbled it.

    • @trevorblades2077
      @trevorblades2077 Год назад

      I already have a rotary tumbler so it’s an easy go to down the road!
      Do you use any water or compound in the tumbler or just some steel shot dry? Like half to 2/3 full?
      The color is insane I’ve only seen it in videos so far!

    • @atlasargentum7019
      @atlasargentum7019  Год назад

      I use water and burnishing compound which is basically just a concentrated detergent in the tumbler with the steel shot. The compound has a dilution ratio printed on the bottle. I don't fill the tumbler all the way because it's too heavy and the belt slips. I typically use about a pound of shot, but ymmv based on the size of your tumbler. If you want to play it safe, I'd say to do it in 5 minute intervals until you see the desired effect.

      It's really not. Like I said, the macro shots are deceiving because it's such a high level of magnification and the flash was reflecting back into the camera sensor. To the naked eye, the chain still has a lot of shine.

      @ryanblanchard2508 2 года назад

      Not saying it doesn’t shine, it’s 24k purity, of course it shines. It does have noticeable wear and surface scratches. I’m not talking about the magnified shots, I could see the scratches when you were running the chain through your fingers. And that’s watching on my phone! I could imagine what it looks like in person. That being said, this is the risk you take when you buy pure gold with large surface area like your Miami Cuban. You better be okay with it having a worn look because there’s no way it won’t look scratched. It’s still a nice piece but for me personally, it would drive me nuts. To each their own.

    • @ryanblanchard2508

      Yeah I hear you. Scratches bother me because I want my piece to look as new as possible for as long as possible. Unlike you, I only wear my chains when I go out. Mine aren’t for daily wear because I want to keep them new. I have a 14k 26 inch heavy link from Jacoje and I’m getting rid of it because despite having a nicely polished surface, the flat parts of the links look very worn and scratched, of course this is when you’re up close looking at it. It still looks beautiful from a distance, but if you were close to me looking at the side neck, as I typically tuck my chains in, you would see it has a worn look which bothers me. The diamond cut franco is my go to chain because it’s got an insane finish that totally hides scratches and blemishes. One day I will get a 5mm in 22k but we’re talking like 130 grams with mark up so it’s quite expensive. I do like the soft yellow color of my diamond cut 14k 5mm franco despite the lower purity, so that’s my go to chain for now.

      This is 24k home-dizzle. Polishing cloths are not a good choice because they tend to smudge instead of polish.
