We needed something to bring us back from the punk thing and this band was a massive part of that. These guys and the Comsat Angels, and the Soft Boys and so on ...
They're on a very very short list of bands from this time that pretty much codified what rock would sound like for the next thirty years. I think Joy Division and David Bowie were the two most important pop artists to come after the Beatles. All alternative rock bands from the 80s and 90s draw from them in some way.
A little trivia, Ian could dance like that because he had some muscular reflections from the seizures caused by his epilepsy, this is why this style of dance is called epileptic dance.
Ray Dodge He had pretty bad stage fright so focusing on his guitar was more convenient. What amazes me is that he managed to become the lead singer after Ian despite his shyness, and kinda explains why he always closed his eyes when he was singing in New Order
In all fairness sumner was never an exceptional guitarist. Listen to some of the early new order gigs in NYC, it’s obvious he’s not the greatest. But the riffs he created more than made up for it

They probably should have left it at EPs until they got ready for the stuff on Power, Corruption, and Lies.

Always a great band, but as someone with epilepsy, I have always appreciated someone giving a voice to it, particularly with the song 'she's lost control'.

I read that Ian idolized Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and even Jim Morrison, yet JD were soooooo British, everything about them was Manchester and they represented their city so well despite the American influences which isn't bad thing, he just always fascinated me! He was big on Bowie fan too.
It wasn't until hearing this live version that I really understood the bands' issues with Martin Hannett's production. On the one hand, Hannett gave them a sound unlike any other punk band, guaranteeing that they stood out from all the many others. On the other, it really sapped a lot of the power out of the songs. His production fit the subject matter perfectly, but I still really wish their was more power in the recordings.
Took me years actually, to appreciate what Hannett did. Literally decades. I love the albums now but was a lengthy process. Insight specifiically. Well...most of 'em

Listen to any of the live verions of "Shadowplay" on the various discs out there - it is incendiary - it will blow your socks off. The studio version on "Unknown Pleasures" is unbelievably great too. New Order only started after Joy Division singer Ian Curtis committed suicide, and they changed their name to New Order and added keyboardist Gillian Gilbert. So it’s not possible for New Order to open for Joy Division. But I enjoyed seeing those bands too, except for Joy Division since I was in the USA and they didn’t quite make it over here. 😢
The version on the live le bain douches is pretty rowdy...punk rock. Loose, a bit sloppy but probably my favorite version. Their albums, especially Closer were produced with a heavy hand...and amazing, but nothing like the live JD.

Was fortunate to see them live on a few occasions back in the day. First time I saw them they were still called Warsaw. Remember them supporting Buzzcocks on a couple of occasions. Always a great live band who I knew would become big. R.I.P Ian and thanks for the sounds guys .
I was 14 when this aired. Disco seemed to be all that got played on the radio. Punk had arrived in a burst of energy and already seemed to be winding down and bands were fading away. A high school friend kept close tabs on music - mostly punk - had the music magazine imports, and would search out the record LPs. Unknown Pleasures got played a lot. Everyone else outside our clique were pooching their lips and rocking their heads back and forth to acts like Bad Company, Foreigner, and Kiss - plus all the other high rotation acts on the radio. It, plus a lot of other bands we were into like The Damned, The Ramones, Iggy, Talking Heads, and David Bowie (just to name a few) was our refuge from all the crap music on the radio. Joy Division made some really amazing music in their too short run and I'm glad they did.

transmission was also played on TV to be fair, and i imagine that the movie was trying to portray several events in that scene, of course quoting Tony Wilsons intro to this performance but i think it was trying to include a reference to the first time Joy Division played Transmission for the first time I'm front of an audience during a sound check (peter hooke stated in his book about how it was the first time they as a band felt like they had really connected with an audience) so i believe thats what the movie was trying to refer to all at once, and of course due to time constraints they couldn't separate the performances. a shame though, Shadowplay will always be my favourite Joy Division song. i must note that its been a while since ive seen control.

Actually, the only one who admitted to being somewhat influenced by Sabbath is Bernard. You can even hear it on songs like Day of the Lords, New Dawn Fades and Leaders of Men (IMO). The first two songs especially just scream DOOM…
They got a lot of atmosphere by keeping the space in their songs. Most people would be tempted to play too much. I am guessing the music was more busy at the jamming stage and they edited out to get to that stark melancholy... Very tender and sweet.
I was in high school, when I took out this album (in cassette! lol). I was originally looking for New Order; someone had stolen all of the New Order albums and this "weird" band Joy Division came up. I never realized how lucky I was to discover them until I was much older. I love Ian Curtis.
What an era for music. Most vibrant and creative and interesting era in popular music. These guys, Ian Dury, Graham Parker, Squeeze, Madness, The Cure. I was lucky to be excited by it all!
Ian Curtis is never not impressive, and Hook/Morris/Sumner were one of the greatest rhythm sections of all time. They could repackage the same material over and over, and it would be worth a buy, so brilliant is the music.

Richie B in general they just started out by jamming , and finding riffs that they liked , often it was Ian who would point out a guitar or bass guitar or drum bit he really liked , then they (I think generally Barney but with input from the others) would arrange it , and Ian would find something in his enormous stash of lyrics that would fit with the music, and he would come up with the vocal part from that.
+Owen Cooke Actually he started doing the style of dancing he did because of the incident in the job centre he was working in when he seen a girl have a fit and it was his way of expressing himself. and letting it all out But of course once he found out he had epilepsy it kind of just fit together with the style of dancing.

Cool to see Tony H Wilson at the start of this vid. He was instrumental in many bands getting noticed or signed, from Manchester and surrounding areas. Joy Division still stand out, as the feeling and sound, that many have followed and tried to copy.

Saw him loads on Granada tv in the 70's and he seemed like just another presenter, but fair play, that guy was passionate about music and put his money where his mouth was, even though it cost him a lot in all kindsa ways. I doubt we'd be watching JD on here if it weren't for him. After he died they named a street in Manchester after him. I think it's called "No we won;t give you money for cancer treatment street". Or something like that.
They always opened with "Shadow Play" at shows as that was the best song to get Ian Curtis "Warmed up" for the night's performance. It builds very slowly... and then boom, he becomes "IAN"

Even the Doors never reached this level of aggression and paranoia, yet Curtis and the band still have this weird calm about them. As far as music can be sincere and wildly more pessimistic than the average politically influential moron would like, this song marked the start of a new era.

Almost 40 years now it still is as startling haunting as ever entwined with huge power chords and the melancholy beauty of the late Ian Curtis 's vocals
Now i do see and do understand the manner of Ian's dance. He showed what he'd felt through those movements. And nobody took a look at that! People gave no @@@@ about the others. I'm happy to live in 2022 and listenin' to such the great rexords.Take care of each other, guys

Despite none of the band members ever saying they were influenced by black sabbath, their live performances sound very similar

Actually, the only one who admitted to being somewhat influenced by Sabbath is Bernard. You can even hear it on songs like Day of the Lords, New Dawn Fades and Leaders of Men (IMO). The first two songs especially just scream DOOM…
They got a lot of atmosphere by keeping the space in their songs. Most people would be tempted to play too much.
I am guessing the music was more busy at the jamming stage and they edited out to get to that stark melancholy... Very tender and sweet.

I was in high school, when I took out this album (in cassette! lol). I was originally looking for New Order; someone had stolen all of the New Order albums and this "weird" band Joy Division came up. I never realized how lucky I was to discover them until I was much older. I love Ian Curtis.

What an era for music. Most vibrant and creative and interesting era in popular music. These guys, Ian Dury, Graham Parker, Squeeze, Madness, The Cure. I was lucky to be excited by it all!

Ian Curtis is never not impressive, and Hook/Morris/Sumner were one of the greatest rhythm sections of all time. They could repackage the same material over and over, and it would be worth a buy, so brilliant is the music.

Jay Coburn yeah it is brilliant! Actually, there was tons of great music right around '78. Talking Heads, Patti Smith, and PIL were gearing up to start flying. For once, all of the GREATEST BANDS in the world weren't all English.
Spiderman Gawd, this song is amazing! Ominous. I'll always wonder, did they write this stuff and then start playing to see what would happen? Or did they just start playing and this stuff is what happened? I guess they had the lyrics, and the general melody, anyway. Seems certain they were blowing each others minds playing these songs. They'd play the tapes back and go "Holy Shit!"
Richie B in general they just started out by jamming , and finding riffs that they liked , often it was Ian who would point out a guitar or bass guitar or drum bit he really liked , then they (I think generally Barney but with input from the others) would arrange it , and Ian would find something in his enormous stash of lyrics that would fit with the music, and he would come up with the vocal part from that.
I just love the dark atmosphere and gloomy lyrics in their music

+Owen Cooke Actually he started doing the style of dancing he did because of the incident in the job centre he was working in when he seen a girl have a fit and it was his way of expressing himself. and letting it all out But of course once he found out he had epilepsy it kind of just fit together with the style of dancing.
+Owen Cooke If you watch the movie control it will paint a better picture on the subject even if it misses out some facts and some stuff because of fitting it all in with the movie but a good chunk of it is correct. :)
Cool to see Tony H Wilson at the start of this vid. He was instrumental in many bands getting noticed or signed, from Manchester and surrounding areas.
Joy Division still stand out, as the feeling and sound, that many have followed and tried to copy.

Cwl to see Tony Wilson introducing them here too. Saw him loads on Granada tv in the 70's and he seemed like just another presenter, but fair play, that guy was passionate about music and put his money where his mouth was, even though it cost him a lot in all kindsa ways. I doubt we'd be watching JD on here if it weren't for him. After he died they named a street in Manchester after him. I think it's called "No we won;t give you money for cancer treatment street". Or something like that.
