    In this Mexico travel video, we share some interesting facts about Mexico-quirks about Mexican customs, traditions, and language that used to be bizarre to us but we now find commonplace.
    We hope this video helps you see some of the unique things about living in Mexico and find out a little more about what Mexico is like. We do our best to share what Mexico is like from the eyes of two Americans living in Mexico. Please *DON'T NORMALIZE* or encourage other tourists to feel that they must have to or allow to be forced to pay any tip in Mexico *(that reinforce a vicious cycle).* Even between Mexicans, there is this misconception that tipping is an "obligation of the customer" to a restaurant (it is not). I'm not against tipping, it's fine if you want to do that, just always remember that *tipping* in Mexico is *optional and voluntary,* not an obligation! No restaurant, bar, discotheque, pub or whatever should ever charge any kind of tipping percentage; no Mexican citizen or tourist should ever be forced to pay any tip, that's totally illegal, since it would be an act of illegal taxation. If that happened, just politely say that you as a customer don't have any kind of legal obligation to pay any tipping, if they insist you can say that you know your rights as a customer, and that you will report that place to PROFECO if they keep doing that. Check official PROFECO page for more information about it.

      How people in mexico when asked to do something say "ahorita" which should mean "right now" but in acutality means whenever I feel like it.

    • @xolotlmexihcah4671
      @xolotlmexihcah4671 5 лет назад +6

      @@amermx It all depends on the context and situation, even the intonation counts. _"Ahorita"_ is a singularity of Mexico that no other Latinamerican country shares. Chileans, Colombians, Peruvians, Argentinians, Spaniards, Cubans, etc. also get confused with that word when they come to Mexico.

      A Mexican friend told us that you can say mientras la cuenta when you're still finishing up your food or drinks. Is that wrong? We frequently say that, or if we're all done, we'll say me trae la cuenta or nos trae la cuenta.

    7:58 the reason for the walled houses in Mexico and also the metal bars on windows and doors is both a historical and a cultural one. Mexican architecture descends from southern Spanish architecture which is of course Mediterranean. The typical hacienda style house, much like the Roman domus usually had an inner courtyard rather than a front lawn. Smaller houses tried to imitate this by having a small backyard enclosed by a wall, but no front yard. And in cities where space was more limited the outer wall also became the house's wall.
    That's the cultural side of the explanation, the historical side is throughout Mexican history the Mexican government has always been relatively weak and incapable of maintaining safety and order, so towns, villages and settlements were often victims of raids by bandits in northern and central Mexico as well as pirates along the coast. Therefore the walls served as a safety measure just as much as the iron bars on windows. This became so common that people continue to do it to this day, though nowadays the walls and metal bars are used to protect against burglars rather than bandits.

    6:29 the reason the check isn't brought to you until you ask for it is because Mexicans consider it rude. If you're halfway through your meal and the waiter brings you the check, people perceive it as the restaurant staff telling you to hurry up and leave. It's funny because when Mexicans go to the US that causes a bit of culture shock. My grandma loved the food at a restaurant in Los Angeles and even though the service and food was good she didn't like the fact that "the rude waiter was trying to make us leave." In reality the waiter was very nice, all he really did was bring us the check before we were done eating. lol

      I am in the US, and when and our town gained a lot of Mexican immigrants over the last 10 years. I learned pretty fast that there’s a whole menu of “secret” delicious food you can buy from people in their cars. Often they were parked in the parking area at Mexican grocery stores. My favs are the tamales de elote fresco. I never worried about “food safety”, because 1) I have never been sick from eating car-cuisine
      2) It’s usually someone’s mom selling the food she also prepares for her family
      So to me, it’s almost guaranteed to be safe. It’s ¡qué rico!....for sure.

    After watching your channel (and Feather & the Wind) I got inspired and booked my own trip to Mexico. I've only been here for nine days now....flew into Cancun, stayed in Playa del Carmen for a few days, ADO'd it over to Valladolid for a few days, and now I'm settled into my Airbnb in Tizimin until January. I don't know how the hell you guys have the huevos for driving here. I can't even sit in the front seat of the taxi without having an internal meltdown. So far, it seems that he who mean mugs the best rules the road. With all that said...the food (chamoyadas, marquesitas, poc chuc, sikil pak, longaniza, al pastor gringas, etc), the culture, the cenotes, the ruins, the colonial churches, it's all so amazing even though the goats, roosters, and dogs decide it's time for a shrieking contest every morning around 5:30am. I've had several odd moments, but tonight when I had to step over a sleeping toddler at the local licoreria to get to the cerveza was definitely a notable one I won't forget. I also won't forget the grouchy iguana at Cenote Zaci that followed me around while relentlessly grunting at me. As a solo traveler, I have to give it up to those who managed to get by without the use of Siri, Airbnb, Maps.me, and Google Translate.

    It’s a smaller town and the dogs were barking constantly all night while people were beating on drums and chanting. I woke at 4am to this (my earbuds ran down) and I thought in a couple hours it would be over. Nononono. It was still going when we were up for breakfast at 10 o’clock.
    The best part are the little cafes and stores and some wonderful people. You can explore all day, every day and not see it all.

    About the recycling... sometimes you can see people on the streets picking up cans or PET bottles for recycling. You can do it on your own, but here' the thing, it's op to you to take all those thing to sell them to recycling places. They pay you for aluminum, PET, copper, etc. Here in Mexico is really common to see people on the city dump searching those things to sell it and that's their job, they live of that.

    Hi guys! Really enjoying your show. I moved to Mexico from Boston (brrrr) 2.5 years ago, to San Miguel de Allende. I love it, but I haven’t had a chance to travel much yet, so it’s great to be going to all these places with you and getting an idea of where I’d like to go when I do get a chance.
    And this video about what was initially strange about Mexico and now commonplace was fun and I could totally relate!
    And I wanted to say you two are looking happier, healthier and more laid back (and I know I am, too). Mexico agrees with us❣️👌🌞😁

    jajaja loved it! as usual...something interesting, many mexicans don't use the "ahorita" term loosely. In my particular case, when I say "ahorita", for me it means literally right now and I apply it as is. Also, I use the car's blinkers all the time (as it should) and most people in Monterrey are used to it for safety reasons of course jeje . Saludos a los dos!

    You brought up many good new sight and sounds found in Mexico. Now, that we are stateside again, we miss the street vendors advertising their goodies. We love the colorful walls where beautiful flowers and vines grow over them. They are charming to us. Yes, there is less time pressure in Mexico, lol. No rush, rush, rush feeling like stateside. Our dog, Charlie, enjoyed meeting new dogs and the farm animals too. Best, Patty and Enrique

    I love the cultural differences between countries. They're so interesting. Living in Mexico you are now prepared for the rest of Latin America. I hope you get to visit my country one day, Argentina. It's as lovely and as weird as Mexico. Just so you know, I also experienced culture shock about some pretty astonishing stuff when I spent a year in the US. For instance, the food! The portion sizes! Oh, and I gained so much weight! It took me a long time to get back into shape once I returned home.

    I am a classical pianist, two of my daughters are singers, and my other daughter is a guitarist, and it isn't uncommon for us to practice at 11 or midnight and no one cares or bothers you. In fact, the neighbours LOVE our music. My redhead is always walking down the street singing at the top of her lungs some Dixie Chicks song or the songs from the "Arizona's Singing Cowboy, Gary J. Sprague and his trusty horse "Dusty" we knew up in Prescott, AZ. Great place. On Sundays - like right now - (10:10 pm), the "platano macho" (plantain) lady just "let off some steam" from her boiler. The whistle if you're close enough will deafen you. HAHA!!!!! How fun - I think I'm going to practise since we have the day off tomorrow (Constitution Day).

    I don't know how it is there, but here in Mexico City, the trucks selling mattresses, appliances, etc all come with a recording advertising their wares --- recorded by A KID. It's the oddest thing that makes me laugh every time I hear it. And then there's the lady pushing a cart and selling $6 peso tamales, or the whistle of the camote (sweet potato) guy, my husband's personal favorite. (Y'all should visit Mexico City!)

    • @TangerineTravels
      @TangerineTravels  5 лет назад +1

      Are they selling the appliances? In cities we've visited, they're asking for people's old stuff to buy it and sell it for scrap metal.
      We're with you though...those vendors on loudspeakers always crack us up! $6 tamales....mmmm :)
      P.S. We hope to visit CDMX very soon!

      That recording is to buy, not sell, mattresses and appliances that you're don't need anymore. It's a girl's voice. :) She was interviewed once. A lot of people replicate her recording.

      Thanks for subscribing to our channel Mario! That’s a tough one honestly. We love the variety in Mexico. Sometimes, we’re looking for the small-town vibes of somewhere like Tapalpa or San Cristobal de Las Casas and other times we want a bigger city like Guadalajara or maybe even Mazatlan. Sorry! Probably not the answer you wanted. 😬

    Have you heard the "camotes cart" hahaha They sell steamed sweetened sweet potatoes, plaintain and pumpkin. If you haven't, I will try to find a video for you. Is hilarious and again, I didn't realize how hilarious it is until a foreigner said it.

    Oct 17, 2018: Ran across one of your videos while surfing for info on retiring to Ajijic. Have visited Ajijic for a week last May, (way tooooooo hot for me), and once before that back in Oct 2016, (temperature-wise, much nicer for me). In the Philippines the local venders were, shoe repair (which covered anything to do with your shoes including shine), corn (boiled corn on the cob with butter), coconut (coconuts sacked open to drink the milk), eggs ( fermented duck eggs called balut don't ask what they smell like).

    Off the wall question; when you're out walking around in these towns and cities, sometimes after having a drink or two, are you able to find public restrooms? I'v found in some areas that a bathroom is nearly impossible to find unless you go into a store where you might have to purchase something to use the bathroom.

    Great videos! Quick question: what’s the availability of (unscented) baby/wet wipes for travel in Mexico? Also, do you know if one can travel/get a TIP with a car that’s still being paid for, so with no car title in hand? Thank you!

    • @TangerineTravels
      @TangerineTravels  5 лет назад

      I don't think we've ever bought wipes of any kind, so unfortunately that's never been something we've noticed. As for your TIP question, you _can_ get one without owning the car/title, but I believe you need special permission from the owner/lien holder. There might be special forms for it. Wish we had those resources for you, but I own my car so that's not something we dealt with.

    About asking for the check, there is a term that has no translation to English which is "hacer sobremesa". Hacer sobremesa means to stay in your table after you finished eating just chilling and talking. Very few restaurants in Mex have a sign that says "Favor de no hacer sobremesa" usually due to always being crowded or with a customer's line waiting outside.
