It would be nice if we had a choice of more than just two people. This is the problem with our "first past the post" (winner take all) voting system. It necessarily results in a stranglehold on the electoral system by just two parties. What we need is a ranked-choice / instant runoff system whereby the voters can vote for not just one candidate, but for several, ranking them in order of first choice, second choice, etc. That way, voters can vote for who they believe is the best candidate without having to worry about "wasting" or "throwing away" their one and only vote because their favored candidate doesn't seem to have a chance of winning the election simply because he or she is not a member of one of the two main parties. If that candidate comes in last on the first ballot count, he or she is eliminated and the ballots are counted again, with those voters' second choices being counted. And so on, until one candidate gets a majority of the votes. Eventually, as voters realize that they can vote for the *best* candidate -- rather than the least offensive "electable" candidate ("the lesser of two evils") -- without throwing away their vote, they will start to vote in large numbers for the best candidate, and the best candidate will actually win.

I've studied politics for my undergrad. My folks are politically active. I have relatives who are die-hard Trump supporters and democrats. In my opinion, I don't think any side should take this election for granted. Anybody who's convinced their ticket has this in the bag has already lost.
As an Australian watching impartially I think deep down people know when their candidate is poor or doesn't truly represent their values. However they are conflicted because they feel that to vote otherwise would be an act of disloyalty and would also be an admission that at some point they were wrong. That's hard and takes a big person to do. However to vote the same way each and every election, even if they know to do so is wrong, amounts to devaluing one's vote. One's vote only has value if it has the capacity to change the world. If politicians feel that their support base will vote for them no matter what then they will just do what pleases themselves with no accountability. A vote is a precious thing, obtained and protected through the blood of our forefathers. Value it, use it, and use to wisely by voting for someone who reflects your own values, even if you may not always agree with their political outlook. To do otherwise is akin to throwing a precious gift on a bonfire.

It would be nice if we had a choice of more than just two people.
This is the problem with our "first past the post" (winner take all) voting system. It necessarily results in a stranglehold on the electoral system by just two parties.
What we need is a ranked-choice / instant runoff system whereby the voters can vote for not just one candidate, but for several, ranking them in order of first choice, second choice, etc.
That way, voters can vote for who they believe is the best candidate without having to worry about "wasting" or "throwing away" their one and only vote because their favored candidate doesn't seem to have a chance of winning the election simply because he or she is not a member of one of the two main parties. If that candidate comes in last on the first ballot count, he or she is eliminated and the ballots are counted again, with those voters' second choices being counted. And so on, until one candidate gets a majority of the votes.
Eventually, as voters realize that they can vote for the *best* candidate -- rather than the least offensive "electable" candidate ("the lesser of two evils") -- without throwing away their vote, they will start to vote in large numbers for the best candidate, and the best candidate will actually win.

I've studied politics for my undergrad. My folks are politically active. I have relatives who are die-hard Trump supporters and democrats. In my opinion, I don't think any side should take this election for granted. Anybody who's convinced their ticket has this in the bag has already lost.
As an Australian watching impartially I think deep down people know when their candidate is poor or doesn't truly represent their values. However they are conflicted because they feel that to vote otherwise would be an act of disloyalty and would also be an admission that at some point they were wrong. That's hard and takes a big person to do. However to vote the same way each and every election, even if they know to do so is wrong, amounts to devaluing one's vote. One's vote only has value if it has the capacity to change the world. If politicians feel that their support base will vote for them no matter what then they will just do what pleases themselves with no accountability. A vote is a precious thing, obtained and protected through the blood of our forefathers. Value it, use it, and use to wisely by voting for someone who reflects your own values, even if you may not always agree with their political outlook. To do otherwise is akin to throwing a precious gift on a bonfire.
