    Very informative. I would suggest "open in new window" rather than "tab". This way you can switch back & forth much easier. (Use Alt-Tab on Windows computers).

    • @carolbianchi7852
      @carolbianchi7852 3 года назад

      I do this, also, so that I can have them next to each other, rather than bouncing back and forth between tabs. Hugely helpful when pulling or comparing info in different locations. Lol! I also have extra monitors for this exercise.

    • @lbfaith
      @lbfaith 3 года назад

      There’s actually a key short cut to switch between. Can’t remember what though. I think if you ctrl shift t it reopens a closed tab. If done by accident. And ctrl left click (the link) opens a new tab. I think new windows would be good for newfound people by searching current ancestor to get to more info on current anc. And the new anc.

    I discovered on family search, that if you go to one of your relatives profile and then check to the right a person that has made a change to the profile, you can click on their user name, and it will show a relationship option that will show you how and if you are related.

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  3 года назад +1

      Yes true... you have to enable relationship sharing first. Good tip... I had forgotten about that.

    Whats the benefit of searching only thr card catalog compared to just searching with the all records tab

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  11 месяцев назад

      The card catalog has 100% of the records Ancestry has. Search from the profile is suggesting records based on the profile data and may weed out too much good stuff.

    Is there a trick to see unindexed records only? I happen to stumble upon probate records for Lawrence county Indiana as a suggestion when I was doing another search and it was unindexed. Turns out I found my brick wall his children. Just want to know if I can just filter to unindexed,

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  3 года назад +1

      Stay tuned. I have an episode coming up about finding unindexed records on family search although the strategy is the same on Ancestry.

    Just tried the card catalog for my Great Grandfather. Immigration & Travel. Selected 8 different databases. 3 brought back nothing. The rest brought back either a different spelling of the surname or records that, if associated with my Great Grandfather or not, it was not evident. Data returned could be anyone.
    I have tried the Card Catalog multiple times for various people, and each time I get the same type results.
    I have been against these walls for so long, I no longer try to get over them. I'm 78 years old so I'll probably get my answers in a few years. Let's hope so.

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  3 года назад

    If there have to be 3 non wildcard letters, how do we search for someone who is listed by initials? For example if I was listed as C S and last name. I have huge issues trying to find a relative named Phraortes. I thought that would be an easy search, but nope, not at all

      I have problems with a Pettycord. There are about 25-30 variations. Peddycoart, Petticoat, Pedycord. One of the tricks I did was do last name search in Findagrave to get a feel for every variation and prevalence. I feel your pain!

    Can't figure out how to search the catalog for an individual. You state that you have to have your tree opened up, if I am understanding correctly. I have my tree opened to my great grandfather, the catagories chosen, but then the search button disappears. I am on my phone. Could that be the issue.

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  7 месяцев назад

      Perhaps. I so rarely use the app... that is a very old video. I just asked Crista Cowan and she said there is a search button on the app when in the ancestor profile.

    6th trick. Ancestry should add more records from Latin america. Spain, Portugal.

  • @alittlepeaceandkarma
    @alittlepeaceandkarma 3 года назад

    I've noticed that the hints on ancestry are sometimes wrong. They get names from your tree and give hints from someone else's unrelated family tree.
    Some people also make mistakes and other people just follow the hints and not cross reference records against other records.

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  3 года назад +1

      Yes... The algorithms are doing their best to deliver the best possible records based on what you have put into your tree. It is up to you to evaluate the records and decide to "accept, ignore," or choose "maybe." Whatever you choose, you can go back and change it later when you learn more information.

    What’s the difference between the ? and the * for wildcard?
    Was researching Hudson and about a few days later I did something diff. Idk what but I found the same people but it was spelled Hutson in their own writing. But all census has a the D instead of T. So guess I have to search both ways.

      The asterisk is for replacing multiple characters and the question mark is for a single character in most search engines.

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  3 года назад

      It depends on if the records are free to begin with, like government records are free. This would be like census records or something paid for with tax dollars. If Ancestry had to pay for the record set, then it would be part of their subscription.

I can get a marriage certificate only. It gives me clues sometimes. I can't use the USA before 1910. how can I do this so I can find someone faster and better?
