Thanks for this video! I've been needing to see this discussed from a photography perspective. I have an M1 Macbook Pro and it still is more than enough but I would like a bigger screen and lighter laptop and was think about the 15" M3 Macbpok Air.
I have an M1 16" Pro and was looking to mainly save weight (the 16" Pro is very heavy) and get the 15" M3 Air. Apple only offered me $1500 on my $4500+ machine! So I will eventually get a large screen MBAir, it's just when? M4, M5? If 13" or 14" then a pro sounds the right move like you say. For me, weight savings and large screen is my major emphasis even though my M1 processes 60 and 100MP images with C1 and PS just fine. As an aside I also have an M2 13" Air (mainly for non-photo purposes, but I do process photos via C1 from time to time) and notice how much faster it processes 60MP files than my M1 Pro.
For me I found if only photos then Air is good enough. 15 Air would be the way I go. If you are going to get into video then Perhaps the M3 MBP but again you are going to go up in weight slightly. I have the 16 M3 max and sometimes taking it on trips is a bit of a chore along with my camera gear. The 13 or 15 air would be more than adequate.
@@btonelli Just happen to remember that when using my M2 13" Air it would not power two small Sabrent external drives at the same time. Since I often process photos on the road, it cramped my style of having RAWs etc on one drive and my C1 Sessions on the "processing" drive. I do this so when back home it's easy to transfer RAWs and C1 Sessions to my separate RAID devices, but it also allows me to have files from many years with me on the road. So for that, it might tip the scales toward a 14" MBP and even the Max with say a bump in RAM to 64? When shooting Tech cam with IQ4150 I would go for 128 RAM, but that is history.

well, exactly your argument of resell value is why people choose the older models on the used market - they are much cheaper, than the newer ones, because of the lessend resale value. also usually the newer one will lose much more value in the next 2 years than the older one, because the older one already has lot of it's main loss already past itself, while the newer one has the biggest part of its drop in value still ahead.

If you don’t use external Drives then 1TB depending on your workflow may fill up overtime if you don’t delete old projects. @@CrazyCalabrese78 haha yes that’s the thing why I said the pro might be a better option especially when you start adding accessories
@@btonelli absolutely. And probably still a very quiet machine if you aren’t pushing the fans hard.
Hello Bobby, I’m a freelance amateur photographer and I upgraded my Mac to M3 15 Air from a 2013 MacBook Pro( intel i5, 8 GB RAM, and 256 SSD).
I have been using wedding and portrait editing for the last decade on that machine. It’s like a ROACH that never dies😂 . The only reason I was planning to upgrade was because most of the editing software uses advanced AI nowadays so I needed a modern chip-based laptop. Thus I went for M3-15 inch with 16G &512 SSD. ( 1699 @ Apple Store but Amazon had a sale last week so I got it for 1499$) I was confused if I made the mistake of getting the air instead of the pro. I’m planning to use Davinci Resolve for iPhone videos or Fuji XT5 Videos. After watching countless comparison videos, I found your explanation video gave l me so much satisfaction on my purchase. I hope I won’t need a pro for the next few years
Congrats on getting the Air! I think you will be more than happy with the performance with how you are using it. If you decide to push your video creation more shooting with higher end 4K cameras, 6k and beyond you may need to look at a pro but for now I think you will be good.
Have you had any overheating issues with your Macbook air?
@@oldmanhendo7183 no because I don’t push it that way. I use it for daily stuff. Anything pro I go to the MacBook Pro for that
@@btonelli what about editing 4k IPhone footage in FCPX? Is the Air sufficient?
@@oldmanhendo7183 yes it’s fine for that.
I can't say all Costco's have this sale but I bought this yesterday on sale at the Anchorage Costco for $1449.00. sale ends tomorrow (8/25/2024)so for the 90 day return policy I went for it. Primarily for Photo Hobbyist coffee shop and vacation edits using LRC/PS and Luminar Neo. I hope it's everything and more for my needs.
Hey i just got an thought in mind that if i build 4000 dollar gaming pc would that be better for editing compare to mackbook pro? Will able to do editing in it smoothly and heavy editing? Cuz in my country apple products are very expensive so i was thinking to build a gamin pc instead of
Yes that can work as well. If you don’t need the portability then you will get more power out of a desktop system
thank you Bobby, a great video!
Hi, awesome video!! I want an M3 air and was wondering if 16 gigs of ram and 256GB would suffice for editing with adobe premiere pro? I was also considering 24 gigs of ram but not sure what’s best. Thank you and have a good day!
@@Taylors_Kitchen26 thanks! I would opt for 24GB especially using Premiere Pro
Hi, planning to get an M3 MacBook Air, 24gb ram and 1tb ssd. I'll mostly do light photo/video editing for youtube. I will also use this for school as I am taking Digital Design Diploma. Getting macbook pro is approximately $700 extra including taxes and delivery, which I can't afford. Would this be a suitable laptop for me?
Yes should be good for you. Enjoy it!
@@btonelli awesome, I appreciate your response
This was very helpful. Thanks!
Glad it could help.
Hello sir i just want to ask you if i buy this laptop under $1278.09 should i buy it for video editing?
@@biprasishchakraborty4401 which version of the Air and what are you editing?
Hello,
Is the Macbook Air
M3, 16GB, 512 SSD
enough for graphic designers?
I would get more unified memory
Great straight up and practical review. Ty
Thanks for watching
Even if you spec out the air vs the pro, its still cheaper. great video btw
@@icweener1636 thanks
Best review I’ve seen so far! Very well explained. Thank you Sir 😊
Thank you! Much appreciated
The very best review out there. Exactly the information I needed
Thank you 🙏
Great review! I accidentally broke my wife's M1 Pro with 8GB RAM, and now I'm planning to buy a new MacBook for her. She primarily uses Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Would the M3 Air with 16GB be sufficient for her needs? I would really appreciate your advice. Many thanks in advance!
Hi! Thanks for watching. Yes 16 is good. If you can squeeze a bit more out of the budget for slightly more unified ram also better but 16GB is a good starting point.
@@btonelli I just bought it yesterday and I am really satisfied.
@@AIer2024 congrats!
@@AIer2024did you get the 16 or 24 GB? I’ll be working on photoshop mostly
@@user-iz8qe4gp7m I chose 16GB of RAM. My wife works with Adobe Illustrator, and it works perfectly.
Did you try the m3 pro on Davinci? O saw a lot of bad reviews about different problems: like the random media offline issue and also the time that it takes to track a mask
I found resolve 18 to be better than 19 for tracking. It’s almost like Davinci took a step back in some ways
Thank you for the information. I do have the same configuration 24 gigs and 2 TB hard drive and thank you for the video. I’m new to your channel. I like what you said although yeah better systems are more money. I do plan on holding my system for a very long time, and I like the efficiency of the system, so I do thank you again for the video and for respecting out your computer lotta people want to save money, but sometimes it cost more money because when you have to reinvest it into another system it’ll cost you more than if you bought a fully loaded system upfront.
Hope this message finds you well and hopefully you’ll make more videos on that laptop .
Oh yeah and the other thing is I went out with the 15 inch. I didn’t go with the 13 inch. I have the 15 inch display
well, exactly your argument of resell value is why people choose the older models on the used market - they are much cheaper, than the newer ones, because of the lessend resale value. also usually the newer one will lose much more value in the next 2 years than the older one, because the older one already has lot of it's main loss already past itself, while the newer one has the biggest part of its drop in value still ahead.
True one may choose that but when lack of support happens or the machine slows down over time they need to spend more to upgrade
I just watched this great video. I recently purchased a MBP M3 16gb and 1tb on sale for $1500. I just need a laptop to complement my iPad Pro M1 11 inches. I don’t do a lot of stuffs but streaming, browsing, office but I think I deserved haha. Honestly I’m thinking about future but MacBook Air is a laptop that would be enough for me. I thought this special price worth the investment for future. What do you think?
Hey! Out of all the videos I’ve watched this one was absolutely the better one, so thank you for that! My MacBook got stolen so now I’m in search for a new MacBook. It will be used for simple tasks along with photoshop and graphic designing ( beginner ) i was thinking about getting the Mac Pro m3 24gb 2TB €2,600 but Then again for a cheaper price I thought why not get the Mac Pro m3pro 36gb 1TB for €2,389? I will be starting my adventure of graphic designing and photoshop on this new MacBook so at the moment I have absolutely no clue how much data will be needed and so forth and whether I will even need this much but hoping to use it for years to come, Thank you in advance
@@MaRk-vo4lt sorry to hear about your MacBook.
When it comes to graphics and design more unified memory would always be recommended. Depending on the scale of your projects. With that said if you use external drives to save your work then go with the 36GB option 1TB. If you don’t use external
Drives then 1TB depending on your workflow may fill up overtime if you don’t delete old projects.
Video work tends to be the big factor for larger storage 1TB vs 2, but if you don’t do video then I think 1TB would be enough. Can use the savings and get an external drive
