My grandmother saw this film at The Princess Theatre in Harriman, TN, at the age of 17. Here's what she wrote about it in her diary on 19 January 1942: "From the very beginning I cried - although it really wasn’t sad then, but just little things they said or even scenes made the tears come. It was the story of a Welsh mining village - mostly of the Morgan family. There were 5 grown sons, Huw (the little boy), a daughter Angharad and the kindly, lovable father and plump Welsh mother. The sons and father all worked in the village coal mines - even the little fellow near the end. Walter Pidgeon was the minister who loved Angharad too much to marry her - he wanted to save her from a life of poverty and work. He was so beautiful - the whole picture, so human and so sad, was beautiful! Wonderfully acted, wonderfully directed, wonderful entertainment, in spite of no definite plot. I should like to see it a 100 times over. Mary and I wept to our hearts’ content, clasped hands in excitement or sorrow every so often and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. The passing of Time is very sad, though, isn’t it? And beautiful memories of a past which is gone forever is - too sad for tears even. It gives me a funny ache some place inside whenever I think of it. Movies like that are as good as a sermon in church - better than a lot, I dare say. Sitting there with people all around and my dearest friend so close beside, with the beautiful story on the screen before me - I felt so uplifted, so unafraid, so glorious! I wish that I might tell you my thoughts then, Diary, but they cannot be written or even spoken. I shall never forget that picture as long as I live - not a single scene! It did something to me deep inside! Webster didn’t print the adjective that would fittingly describe the beauty of “How Green Was My Valley.”"

She didn't mention the terrific soundtrack! Yes - one of my all-time favorite movies. Only problem was that Huw should have been played by 2 actors - Roddy McDowell for the first part and an older actor later. Having little Roddy throughout doesn't show the passage of time. But that's not a huge problem.

Sarah, what beuatiful sentiments. I'm 72 years old in 2020 and I never saw "How Green Was My Valley" until 1980 after I moved to San Francisco. But right away, the sentiment was the sentiment I felt because of my own family, through our faults and our humanity. For some years, I thought that, because of the technical quality and the uniqueness of the story, that "Citizen Kane" should have won Best Picture instead of HGWMV. But as I have gotten older and reflected on my own family, I agree with the director, Peter Bogdanovich. He said he could never could get through the first 10 minutes of HGWMV without feeling the tears. He thought Oscar got it right with the John Ford film. And so do I.

I come from a very dysfunctional family. The highlight of my days of youth would be Saturday night, after everyone had gone to bed and I would make something to eat and sit up and watch old movies on TV. That is when I first saw this film. I must have been about 14 or 15....so that was more than 55 years ago...it has always stayed with me.

Very similar, except that I spent the whole week just living for films (as we called them, then) circling each one in pen in the Radio Times every week. Sunday afternoon films on BBC1 were always a great pleasure, as were school summer holidays and Christmas time. I pretty much learned how to be a man from watching films from the 30s, 40s, 50s... as my own dad was nothing but absences filled with bad stories and frightened silences centred on his reappearing. That was back in the very early 1970s and onwards. Strangely, I saw 'How Green' for the first time today, and I loved it. Even after all these years, there are still so many truly powerful stories to read and films to watch from times past. I'm very thankful. I'm nearly 58 now, and I'm still learning.

My grandfather was a Welsh coalminer in his teens and one day he up sticks to seek his fortune in London. He told me about this film about a year before he died about how real it was for these people. The following year after he died for some strange reason I woke up at around 2 am and put the TV on just as this film started. I've often wondered if he woke me up to watch it.

"Injustice can never be remedied with more injustice..." Oh how true those words. Today more than ever.
If people would only stop and realize the shortness of life, the quickness of the passages of time. My 70 years have flown by, all memories, sweet, sad, my family is gone, my spouse dead these long 14 years, my children are grown and living a world away with their children, living their own lives making their own memories. And now at the end of my life all I have are the memories of yesterday...and so I stay alone, writing and watching old movies to have some semblance of a life left to live...thank GOD for memories...

@Huw Wilson it’s about life. These welsh people were grateful for everything they had. Family was most important. Their faith in God sustained them and gave them hope for the perfect life in heaven. Men were men, women were women, and they were each proud of there roles. To watch the spirit of this family, how they celebrate life and family and cope with their troubles and losses...all this holds valuable lessons for all of us. Wealth does not bring happiness. Maybe ease, but not happiness. Happiness and contentment comes from our gratefulness for what we do have, and our relationships, even our commitments. These lessons will always be relative for all time.

He introduced classics like this and whilst I should of been at school. I'm certain I learnt more about life, love, sacrifice, community, just values from these films than anything. I have been missing that part "if my father was the head of the house-my mother was it's heart" out of all the years I have watched it! This is why I enjoy watching favorite movies of mine because every single time, I find a gem that I missed. Today it was the statement you mentioned. Yes, a mother and a father exemplified here is rarely seen today! I was a teen during the late 60's early 70's when this country was going through such turmoil, although I did not fully understand what was happening. Today, at soon to be 67 years old, I now understand that humanity has chosen a baser mind set. I am truly grateful for my spiritual awakening in that it has allowed me to live life on a higher spiritual level. Otherwise, I would be totally depressed!!!!! The mother stating that her son spoke to her and mentioned the "Glory" he sees (which I also missed after all the years of watching this movie) reinteratesfor me that we are "spiritual beings having a human experience."

I remember watching this film in the early 70s, aged about 8, and crying when the father was trapped underground. We were living in a small house of 3-generations, and my grandfather and father were both Welsh Valleys' miners. I was the first generation not to go underground and the family mining history goes back to the 1860s, my great-grandfather was killed underground in 1916 when my grandmother was aged just 2.
Of course, the film is set on a Hollywood film set, and does little to capture the grimness, darkness and realities of Welsh Valley's life. Men over the age of 50-struggled to breath, let alone sing, and everything is so large and bright. Welsh mining houses were tiny with a shared toilet at the bottom of the garden in late Victorian Times. But heck, it's a film and it should be forgiven its Hollywood poetic licence and enjoyed for what it is - an all-time classic.

I've just finished this film for the very first time and I must say that this is one of the most moving and realistically beautiful films I have ever seen! How Green Was My Valley is a masterpiece and truly one for the heartstrings. All the performances were brilliant and I was genuinely mesmerised by every scene. There is a really traditional feel about it that makes this film a classic. John Ford has always been one of my favourite directors, and this film is definitely one of, if not his best! This has very quickly become one of my favourite films and will stick in my heart for a very long time :)

Fox wanted to shoot the movie in Wales in Technicolor, but events in Europe during World War II made this impossible. Instead, Ford had the studio build an 80-acre authentic replica of a Welsh mining town at Brent's Crags[6] (subsequently Crags Country Club) in the Santa Monica Mountains near Malibu, California.[8]
The cast had only one Welsh actor, Rhys Williams, in a minor role

Just watched this for the first time. Hit me in a place few movies do. The level of grief and sadness yet undying love and warmth from the characters gave me butterflies. It really makes me appreciate the modern day conveniences we have today and develop a true understanding of how hard our ancestors worked. The mines were brutal conditions and existed long before employees having rights or any form of health and safety were around. We have it so easy today and this really made me appreciate that. Found this by accident because of the singing, the voices of the men. So beautiful. The father 'the head and the mother the heart'. So many memories, feeling and emotions. I am from mainland Europe, a large family five brothers and four girls and we shared the tasks without question or having to be paid. Best suits and shoes were sometimes shared. Tragedy struck too and many were killed and the community, the people worked together, looked out for one another. The gossip, and the behaviour of some church elders brings back memories too. Past times of so long ago.

I'm watching it here on RUclips instead of the non-blue ray DVD that I was just getting ready to watch on the DVD player-go figure right? This movie was shown to me in high school in the mid seventies. Even as a child of that era I was totally struck by the beauty and tragedy of the story. It is to this day my favorite movie and I introduce as many people as possible to it. I rewatch it at least once every year. As I approach my 63rd birthday in a few days I look back on my own life with the same mix of joy at childhood memories and the sorrow of those I love who have gone before me. I never fail to cry at the messages within this movie. Messages that are as relevant today almost a hundred years later. The vast divide between the rich and the poor and the advantage those in power take from those with none. The hypocrisy of religion in many faiths and churchs around the world. The struggle between socialism and personal responsibility and where the line should be drawn between unity and individuality. Every performance is perfect, the music, the cinematography. This is an example of where a movie that reaches into the soul of every man is a better and more relevant movie than Citizen Kane could hope to be and a worthy Oscar best.

I heard about this film. I love the Hollywood drama of depicting this Welsh village. I understand it is Clint Eastwards favourite film. Great directing by John Ford and a sterling performance by the young RoddyMcDowell who in later life went on to star in Cleopatra as Augustus and The Planet of the Apes. Thank you for posting this.

    Such an endearing movie.
So many scenes that speaks volumes and warms your heart.
    Magnificent talent of John Ford.
I felt swept away in the story telling. I don't think my mind would do the Writer justice if I just read the book but to see the Writer's work transformed to a screen is quite remarkable.
