    "Phantom Bride"'s solo is highly uncharacteristic of Deftones, that's because it's played by Jerry Cantrell, from Alice in Chains.

      Gore is what happens when Chino and Sergio write the bulk of the material, and an inferior producer/engineer/mixer does the production (whoever did Gore). The sonics are so bad. The guitars are too loud and extremely harsh. The drums and vocals are buried in the middle of the mix...dull and muffled. This is the reason they went back to Terry Date for Ohms.

      @@mollyesanborn Yeah the best channels aren't always about how much money is invested in it or the production quality but the quality of people's character vibes.
      Some people can have the most fundamental or basic video quality but so long as their perspective and character are interesting then people naturally gravitate towards them.
      Just remember to continue to describe things with what comes to mind organically. Deep down, this is always the best. TAO!!! ☯

    Just fyi, Koi No Yokan has lots of transitions between tracks. It's best to listen to the whole thing all the way through without stopping. But for reaction purposes, I'd recommend listening through the transition until the next song starts, pausing to comment and then backing up to go through the transition again into the next song.
    Keep up these reactions Molly. You're doing a great job!

    Hear me out… I think that one day, in 5 or 10 years, people will look back at gore like we do to saturday night wrist. An album clearly marred by tension within the band, that turned out really strange, but in a weird beautiful way that had amazing highlights and a new experimental sound.

  • @pushpauseandwave
    @pushpauseandwave 3 года назад +13

    glad you enjoyed it Molly, it is a much maligned album by some of the fanbase but I always found a lot of those criticisms overblown. The only big issue I have with it is the final mix is too compressed and it lacks that huge dynamic sound from other Deftones albums that I think would have benefitted these songs more.
    - you mentioned the older Deftones albums being more "acoustic" and this one being more "electric", I think you are confusing that with a certain pedal sound or tuning or distortion as Deftones whole catalog is very much "electric". "Gore" is Deftones first album in awhile to have songs with a clean electric guitar sound and something approaching more standard tunings, much of the rest of their catalog post-White Pony has grown increasingly more downtuned (add another string to the guitar every 2 albums basically haha) and they definitely lean into the distorted electric guitar sound.
    -Hearts/Wires is a masterpiece, glad you agree. I also agree that it would work well in a movie, preferably one directed by Michael Mann
    - L(MIRL) = Let's(Meet In Real Life)
    - Jerry Cantrell from Alice In Chains plays the guitar solo on "Phantom Bride" in case you did not know

    I genuinely love this album. I feel like they took the, to quote Anthony Fantano, "shoegazey" sound of Saturday Night Wrist and they made it into a calmer album (yeah I know Fantano hated Gore). I'd put this one as my third favorite, with White Pony being the best and with Diamond eyes coming in second. Of course it is a moot point, every Deftones album is absolutely amazing.

    Agree this is an enjoyable album! Jammed to this album the other night completely. I can only describe it like flying through clouds that switch from gray and calm to dark and full of lightning then back again. It takes you on a ride. I'm a sucker for more atmospheric and ambient music so a song like Hearts/Wires really hits home just like Tempest, Rosemary, Riviere, Digital Bath, etc. Love the songs they do that have a climactic buildup then just throw you in the fire. As a HUGE Deftones fan, this album just seems "off" to me. A lot of people say it needs to be mixed better, I dont exactly know why its my least favorite. Hearts/Wires & Prayers/Triangles (to me) alwasy seemed very "30sec to Mars" vibe. Perhaps because Chino and Leto were/are friends and that had some influence on the sound? You can find video of Chino at their concert, singing "The Kill" a few years back. For me tho, Gore and Adrenaline are my bottom two Deftones albums. Adrenaline just because I'm not into that aggressive sound like I was at 15 when it came out. The new album is superb, Koi No Yokan is perfect, every Deftones album is a 10/10 for me...aside from Gore and Adrenaline. Tho, love the art from Gore. Frank Maddox really captured that retro 80's/VaporWave look everyone is into these last 2-3 years. The pinks, flamingos, Miami Vice type lol Hes always ahead of the game in album/art. But even if Gore is the worst album...its still a 8 out of 10 and was better then 99% of the music released that year.

    Some Deftones albums are clearly Stephen writing most the guitar melodies, they are typically more chug-a-chug. Others, like Gore, are clearly Chino tinkering with single string melodies driving the songs. It did take me several listens to really appreciate Gore, but in the end, it's another great Deftones album, not my favorite, but just top tier songwriting and beautiful stuff.

    I recommend giving the "(Like) Linus" album a listen too. It's the earliest album they have and it's very different compared to their official first album (Adrenaline). Really interesting to see your take on this album. Although I wouldn’t necessarily call this a bad album, it’s most definitely my least favorite in their discography. I could go on and on about all the things I didn’t like about it, but mainly it was that I didn’t like the way it was executed. Just like you said, it was lacking that push and pull, that kind of dichotomy, a piece that the guitarist Steph really contributes to the band, and it’s well known that he was quite disengaged during the writing process of this album. I like the atmosphere and mood to the album, but the performance just felt kind of lackluster, and the not so great studio mixing didn’t help either. Don’t get me wrong, the songs on this album that I really enjoy are some of my favorites out of their entire almost 3 decade spanning discography: phantom bride, Rubicon, hearts/wires. I thought acid hologram and l mirl were pretty good too, but other than that, everything else was kind of meh at best. I think this album had a lot of potential, but unfortunately it didn’t rise to that potential. Something tells me you would really enjoy their 2006 release Saturday Night Wrist. You could maybe say it’s even more diverse and experimental than White Pony, and has some of the most apparent tug-of-war feeling out of anything they’ve ever put out. It’s an album that divides many Deftones fans, but has always been one of my absolute favorites

    Gore is a weird record. As you continue your Deftones journey you'll hear more of their melodic/atmospheric stuff, but you'll also find out that they have never done it like this! This is not even metal anymore, except for some bits here and there, and I think that's one of the reasons why a lot of the fans were kinda disappointed by Gore 🤔 just to make an example, when you'll listen to Diamond Eyes you'll hear a record that's even more melodic than Gore, but it's also metal as fuck and a more "typical" Deftones record (which is by no means a bad thing, that album is an absolute masterpiece).
    Gore, on the other hand, is just...different. It's so weird, but I love it and I'm glad you enjoyed it too 😊 can't wait for the next reaction 😊

    Wait, have you heard Ohms? you mentioned it so wasnt sure.
    I personally think Ohms is up there among their best work like Diamond Eyes, Koi No Yokan and White Pony.
    Should note that after their 5th album "Saturday Night Wrist" their bassist Chi was involved in a car accident that left him in a coma and then lead to his death a few years later. They shelved an entire album called "Eros" and came back with their currebt bassist Sergio Vega with what i still consider their best album, Diamond Eyes

      I did listen to Ohms last year when it was released, it was the first Deftones album I heard and the only one I didn't do a reaction to. It's been a bit since listening to it but Ohms does have a great sound, I'll be curious to see what I think of it after hearing their entire discography!

    I dare to say that Gore is my least favorite album by Deftones, some might say that the mix is kinda weird and I do agree only in (L)MIRL, but overall I think that the track positioning was a little disapointing. Like, Pittura Infamante is one of my favorite tracks from them but it being right after Heart/Wires is such a clash, the overall tone kinda battles itself in some moments with the few more agressive parts. It's not a bad album in the slightest, but the listing of the tracks, for me at least, just created this crashing of tonality that don't really flow well when the songs bring the energy more. As you said, definitelly a more ambient and restrained album overall and I'm all in for that but the sprinkles of energy and explosion kinda breaked this concept in a fancy, weird way.

    • @mollyesanborn
      @mollyesanborn  2 года назад +1

      Well said, I agree with your point about the tracks not having the best flow. Some of their other albums blow me away with how amazingly cohesive they are from song to song, and I didn't get that as much on Gore. Still a very solid album though.

    Gore is my least favorite Deftones album and a massive disappointment as a longtime fan. IMHO Producer Matt Hyde's style didn't fit the band, guitarist Stephen Carpenter admittedly didn't want to make this album, even apologizing to Chino Moreno for his performance on it. That's why Chino's vocals overshadow the instrumentals and the energy is lacking. However, the conflict had a positive, everything they did in their approach for Gore was the opposite of how they approached Ohms. The good news for your reviews is that the 4 albums you have left are all OUTSTANDING. If you love the ambient stuff, can't wait for you to hear "Cherry Waves" off Saturday Night Wrist or "Romantic Dreams" from Koi No Yokan. If you want intense, can't wait for your opinion on "When Girls Telephone Boys" from [Self Titled] or "Rocket Skates" from Diamond Eyes. Keep up the good work!

      @mollyesanborn  3 года назад

      Yeah I can see that. As someone who's newer to them it was still a very enjoyable album, but I certainly can understand why longtime listeners who grew up with their darker, loud, intense sounds would find it less appealing.
