    Well given you’re watching/have watched a “hardest hits compilation” it’s probably useful to explain tackling and what is and isn’t allowed:
    • You can only tackle the man carrying the ball.
    • Tackles must below shoulder height - if it’s higher (shoulder/head) it will result in a penalty (potentially a card able offence)
    • When tackling, the tackler cannot pick the player up and tip them up (raising their legs over the horizontal and tipping them).
    • Tackling someone without the ball will usually result in a penalty and potentially a yellow card (5 minute sin bin). The only mitigation would be in the event that the tackler committed to the tackle prior to the ball carrier passing the ball on
    • Tackles must be with the arms wrapping around (or at least create the impression that they are trying to wrap the arms). Not using the arms will result in penalties/cards
    • It is an illegal move to tackle someone in the air (will most likely result in a red card and expulsion from the rest of the game)
    You were watching rugby union and yes there are differences in the rules.
    As for watching - there is the Six Nations (England, France, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Italy) in the northern hemisphere and in the Southern Hemisphere there is the tri-nations (New Zealand, Australia and South Africa) which now has a 4th team, Argentina involved.
    Every 4 years there is the world cup with the next one in 2023 and will be held in France. Good news for you in that the following world cup will be in the US. Would suggest that ESPN might be a carrier of the matches.
    You alluded to whether anyone has died playing - sadly yes, but this is very rare. The main concern with rugby (especially in light of hard hits) is the long term damage to player’s health. Some of the greatest players have ended up with conditions such as MND (think you might refer to it as Lou Gehrig’s disease) e.g. Joost van der Westhuizen. Unfortunately in the 1995 world cup hosted in South Africa, a player from the Ivory Coast became paralyzed after a ruck collapsed on top of him. Over the past 10 years or so, the game rules have changed to try and improve player safety (e.g. if the ref is concerned for a player who might be concussed will insist on a mandatory check. If a player is concussed they are automatically prevented from playing for a few weeks whilst they recover).
    Hope this helps.

    Before you get into the laws of the game and all the details, I’d recommend watching “Unbelievable 3 minutes of rugby” on the All Blacks RUclips channel. It's from a single game, so it'll give you a better idea than clips from multiple games. Without Downs the play evolves and flows constantly. Without pre rehearsed Plays it shows the level of awareness that each player must have, literally thinking on their feet. It also shows how enjoyable a good game of rugby can be.

    As many have mentioned, Rugby is on the standard school sport curriculum in the UK. Before 11 we played 'touch rugby' which doesn't have full tackles. After 11 I joined our school women's team and we had 2 girls who played for the England under 16 team. We often didn't get to the end of pratice as we'd run out of un-injured players. We also occasionally played mixed rugby with the boys team. Using aluminium studs on your boots was phased out to using plastic studs tor safety.
    I have to say playing Hockey on frozen winter ground was more painful with worse injuries.

    • @kieranh2005
      @kieranh2005 Год назад +1

      Playing rugby on frozen hard fields is also quite painful.

    • @britishknightakaminininja1123
      @britishknightakaminininja1123 Год назад

      I'll echo this from the male perspective - there were more injuries from field hockey matches at our school than from rugby. Someone slamming you with their body is doing it in a way to avoid injury to themselves (and with no real intent to injure, just to take the opponent down). But hockey sticks have no such consideration. Rugby is rough, but also incredibly fun. There's just so much sense of achievement in taking down that powerhouse player on the opposing team, or evading the all-out flying tackle, or being one of the smaller, faster players just racing that ball up the wing faster than the opposition can react and intercept.
      American football *is* Rugby Football that split off and went its own way centuries ago and added all that padding and armour, allowed the ball to be thrown in any direction, removed scrums, and eventually fully commercialized the spectator sport aspects of the game. Rugby itself split into Rugby Union and Rugby League, two variant rules sets for the rest of the world, and is a huge sport. Events such as the Five Nations, or the Rugby World Cup are truly huge international events, rather than the US so-called 'World Cup' events for sports only played by the USA.
      The reason you don't see Rugby much in the USA is largely the commercialization of American Football that I mentioned in the prior paragraph. The whole sport of American Football is a heavily commercial venture, in the most Capitalist nation, and they make sure to let TV companies and press know that if they start chipping away at their audience and profits by showing too many other sports then they will hold grudges. I'm sure you know the kind of lobbying and 'gentle pressures' that commercial companies can unfairly use to get favourable outcomes.
      Don't misunderstand me here - I'm not saying that American Football is 'wrong' or 'bad', I'm simply pointing out that it is far more commercialized, with the majority of the tweaks and rules changes made being to make it a better spectator sport - short fast plays, constant action, cheerleaders, instant replays, etc. Its all built to attract spectators and sell tickets and merch. It's almost more business than sport, and we know that a lot of young players learn that the hard way.

    When I was in school (in England) we played Rugby from the age of eleven. My school had the "genius" idea of playing Football ("Soccer") in the Spring/Summer and then Rugby in the Autumn/Winter when the ground was often frozen solid so it hurt even more when you got tackled to the ground! (imagine being taken to the ground in -4°C/24.8°F weather)

    Probably the biggest difference between American Football and Rugby Union (the version you are watching) is the idea of continuity. In most other versions, when there is a tackle, play stops and there is some form of reset. In Rugby Union, both the tackler and the tackled player have to get up and recycle themselves into play.

    When I was at grammar school (1959-66) , one term my sports master wrote in the report of my prowess on the Rugby field “Afraid to be in the thick of it”. Those of my classmates who shared my level of expertise/commitment in this area of endeavour agreed with me when I reported that I would have been better described as “Completely disinclined to be on the damned field”. I can however report that my two cousins (nearly a generation older than me) were firmly committed Rugby players, the elder of whom went on to become a referee and the organiser of the referees’ rota for his part of his county. I therefore hold that on balance my family has been quite firmly committed to the sport.

We have grandfather's playing this game in local amateur clubs. It's also ,I believe,the fastest growing college sport in the US. As a comparison,in rugby Tom Brady wouldn't be a superstar. I had to give up Rugby years ago at school due to a serious injury caused by the goalpost, not padded in those days. At least after healing I could still play Cricket. Serious injuries are actually rare. You're right about the girls being worse and harder, we used to challange the girls Hockey (field) team to a Rugby match each year, and they challenged us to a Hockey match, We always lost both as we had more players carted off injured than they ever did. Vicious was an understatement. Our Rugby pitches were on the softest and wettest part of the sports fields, boggy or frozen solid, nothing in between.

    Rugby is one of the most popular sports in the world outside America. Best international countries are New Zealand, Australia, England, Wales, South Africa, France and Ireland and a lot of people get injured but it’s fun to watch and fun to play; main rules, no tackles above the shoulders, only pass the ball backwards you can kick, if you knock the ball forward there is a scrum the thing where there are people on both teams on the ground or it’s a penalty

  • @jasmineteehee3612
    @jasmineteehee3612 2 года назад +1

    It’s called a scrum, is a means of restarting play after a minor infringement. It involves up to eight players from each team, known as the pack or forward pack, binding together in three rows and interlocking with the three opposing teams front row. At this point the ball is fed into the gap between the two forward packs and they both compete for the ball to win possession. Teams can be penalised for intentionally causing the scrum to collapse, and for not putting the ball into the scrum correctly. A scrum is most commonly awarded when the ball is knocked forward, or passed forward, or when a ball becomes trapped in a ruck or maul. Because of the physical nature of scrums, injuries can occur, especially in the front row.

    The art of rugby tackling is now being taught in the NFL as it is much safer and players suffer less head injuries as a result. I believe it was the Seattle Seahawks who first introduced it.
    Rugby is also a great school sport as it allows kids of all shapes and sizes to participate in the game in a certain position on the field. You need somebody big and heavy for the Scrum and you need somebody light and fast for the wing. Without the scrum obtaining the ball the wing does not get the ball to score the try.
    Rugby is also continuously ensuring that the game is kept head injury free as possible. There were two examples within that video that would have got the player sent off for dangerous tackles.

    One of the toughest rugby players there is: Buck Shelford. Here's one of the most famous stories from his careers:
    "Roughly 20 minutes into the match, he was caught at the bottom of a rather aggressive ruck, and an errant French boot found its way into Shelford's groin, somehow ripping his scrotum and leaving one testicle hanging free. He also lost four teeth in the process. Incredibly, after discovering the injury to his scrotum, he calmly asked the physio to stitch up the tear and returned to the field before a blow to his head left him concussed."

    International Womens Rugby is the only sport that women play that I will watch, you need to see it lady’s, they put everything into it, I’ve tried watching other womens sports but they all seem to be very lacklustre to the mens games, I’ve tried watching womens basketball but after five minutes of watching them miss the easy baskets I felt like I needed to walk in front of a bus so gave up, same with other womens sports but Rugby they do great, my team is the England Roses 🌹

    Morning from South Africa where rugby is in our DNA. It is a game of speed and power and if you love these you should totally get in on the sport. The next upcoming international event for South Africa (Springbucks) happens on 2 July when we play against Whales. That gives you a few weeks to get the basics together. We play them again on 9th and 16th.
    Welcome to rugby!!!

    The only protection you wear in rugby is a mouth guard. It doesn't prevent you from losing your teeth, it makes finding them back easier.

    If the ball is on the floor it's a ruck ( or after a restart, a scrum) if the ball is still in a player's hands, it's a maul. In either case, you're trying to get the ball out to your "backs" who do the running..

    When Rugby first began in the early to mid 1800's, rules were notably less defined: there was no limit on the number of players allowed on the field and there were early games played with literally hundreds of players on each side. Weapons were also carried by some players!

    If you’re genuinely excited by the skill levels, watch the Super Rugby which is based in the Pacific. Lots of big hits too. The Six Nations can be very exciting too, but (and as a proud Welshman it pains me to say it) it can be dull when the teams aren’t playing well. The womens Six Nations is also becoming more popular

    the reason why you can't turn on the tv and watch a rugby game in the states is because the rest of the world doesn't exist as far as america is concerned. without being clever but if america doesn't come first then the sport won't be shown on tv over there.
