  • Complete removal of 330000 Vertical Series Intek Briggs & Stratton Engine on a 42" Ariens lawn tractor. Engine was removed because of a failing camshaft. The compression release mechanism on the camshaft failed which disabled the engine from starting. This is the first of two videos. The second video details the removal and installation of the camshaft plus reassembly of the sump cover.

Rather than use an impact wrench, I put a pipe wrench on the pulley under the engine block and a 5/8" socket with a half inch drive on the bolt underneath. Worked pretty well.

You can use a pipe wrench on the pulley shaft to hold it.

Hello. This video is on the older side, but I don’t recall saying I’d need to change the muffler. Maybe though! To this day, the factory muffler is on this mower. Anyway, thanks for commenting! 👍👍👍

There is a large bolt that holds the pully on. How did you get it off? Do you unscrew it counter clock like most other bolts? I am trying to get ready to take engine off my troy bilt 30" lawn tractor. Thanks!

Clint S I used an impact gun to remove the pulley bolt. If you don’t have access to an impact gun, now would be a good time to get one. If you don’t want to buy an impact gun, you’ll need to prohibit the pulley from moving as you use a standard wrench to remove the bolt. Otherwise the engine will turn over as you try to loosen the bolt. And yes, the bolt turns counter clockwise to loosen. Best of luck!

And the oil can be in?

Yes it can, but I’d recommend draining prior to removing the engine. Makes it that much lighter.
