You nailed the finesse! Timing this thing is sooo difficult! When you play along to the drumless isolated tracks you can hear how much Jeff manipulated the time in order to get a great feel. He was a magician.

I found this from a Blogspot on Jeff Porcaro: "On Toto IV, his drum sizes used to record were 10", 12", and 13" rack toms of standard depth, 16" and 18" floor toms, and a 22 X 16 bass drum. He also used a 6 1/2 X 14 Radio King snare drum. The cymbals were all Paistes, and included a 20" Formula 602 ride, 18", 19" and 20" 2002 crashes, a 16" Formula 602 crash, and 14" Formula 602 hi-hats."
Omg I love the sound of these toms.. even with all the muffling they have a clear note and tone.. beautiful sound.. the Percy shuffle is flawless too.. lots of practice went into this piece!

He made a deal with pearl right after recording the Toto IV album. That's why I'm talking about the photos, cause on the back you can see a Yamaha kit that he plays. That's also why it says 'Jeff Porcaro's equipment speaks for itself' 🤣

So good man really interesting watching you put this together but I hate to say it man those ghosts notes are so incredibly hard to get exactly right. My uncle met Jeff vaccaro and Toto back in the eighties and he said before that song came out Jeff would spend his time playing that shuffle groove in between sets so I think it's just playing it over and over and over before you finally get those Ghost notes perfect because you can actually hear them really closely they're quite busy
honestly man, I played this song a lot, and love most of us just did the cheaters way.. you know what I mean. other night I sat on the set and spent 4 hours unlearning. its incredibly hard for people with a certain brain programming to be able to split their mind to echo those ghost notes. its just one of those things that really hard to do right. I finally clicked and when it did its like I had been playing it for 20 years. I cant believe how it happened. I still dont understand but its like magic. love this stuff

All your stuff is spot on yet I am assuming you have little Paiste’s in the studio? Just curious being that this and Stewart were both Zildjian when they were very famously Paiste players and you all are super accurate so I doubt you’d miss that detail.
Btw you should have WAY more subs... this is unbelievable. How is the dampening done? Just some tissues? I would enjoy a video comparing that 80‘s dampening method vs. moongel or sth.

you should get a VST drum kit, they sound much better than any hardware brain on these kits and you can tune until the cows come home. you can even use a standalone if you dont have a DAW. superior drummer is great is you have 400 bucks. EZ drummer is cheaper. then you have garage band for free that has great kits if youre on a Mac

I suspect the dry "muffling" sound came less from the actual drums and more from the recording method in the original...but whatever works if you're trying to emulate the same sound in a modern recording set up then go for it.

Jeff didn’t invent this shuffle though, several songs before had this. Fool On The Rain -Zappelin, Steely Dan reelin In the Years and Babylon Sisters and more. Great shuffle, it’s my fave!
He actually did, that is why it is called the Rosanna shuffle. It is listed on multiple places that he did combine the usual Purdie shuffle with Fool in the rain, with adding the Bo diddley bass drum beat.
Chogaar but the actual sextuplet halftime was Bernard purdie ten yes before this. It’s a slight change in foot work. Just like Bonham did on Fool In The Rain. Hands are doing the same patterns.
