Mercedes W211 - Visit Workshop Error Fix - SBC Battery

- When you see "Visit Workshop" in red in the centre of the dashboard of your W211 Mercedes E Class, this is how you fix it, by replacing the backup battery for the SBC brake system. In this example the battery is being changed on an E320CDi, but the same or similar should apply to other models in the range.
Well done for taking the trouble to upload this. You saved me a fortune! It solved the problem and worked a treat. Ended up getting the exact same battery off eBay. A total cost of £42!! Thanks again.

gosh i went to the electrical shop, they told me to change the main battery, but the red battery still flashed, then i went to another shop and they told me to change the alternator, watching your videio i am absoulately flabagasted, thank you thank you,
I just bought a 320cdi with same problem...was thinking it was bad alternator...but now i know...Great Video and will save a lot of worry...Well Done...have to find sat nav cd now..

what i'm facing with my w211 is:-
1- dipped beam, right (when i checked it, i found the main reason is lo volt. to the right lamp.
2- malfunctio electrical consumer ( grey battery message )
3- service brake visit workshop
4- brake defective ( red message with alert + no braking act @ all + handbrake and ABS light on )
and you know what !!! its not all the time !! some times its very good and some time those lights and problem coms again !!
after watching you great clip. i think this small battery never changed before in my car and i this changing the battery will solve my sadenely errors.

Hi, did you change the battery? And if you did, " dipped beam " and " service brake visit workshop " are they gone or you still see them ??
Will power-steering be affected when visit workshop message appears on dash screen? The message does not mention power-steering as an error, however after replacing the airmatic suspension there is no power-steering even though there's plenty of fluid.
thanks for this had a bit of trouble fitting the the terminal bolts as the merc ones are bigger but got there in the end. only thing is you dont need to disconnect the main battery in the boot to fit the backup one ( I asked Mercedes main agent )

I had the car repaired at a Mercedes garage but not a MB concessionaire as I did not want to do the work myself. The Mercedes battery cost about 120 euros and the total repair cost, including resetting the electronics, about 250 euros which is not too bad.

Hello, kindly advise me as to why you need to remove the negative of the main battery, in the booth before you change SBC battery in the E class, W211. Cheers, Colin.

Did you just disconnect the main battery or you kept the ECM alive by keeping it attached with the 12 volts power
Lead acids can take an age to charge and fast charging them is really really bad for them. You can't just crank up the amps, you will ruin a battery trying that. I half expected thefault sign to come up again. Some car makers make it so the fault codes need clearing mine did after a minor fault I fixed. I ended up buing a code reader for my pc so I could read and erase fault codes. Makes finding some faults easier too!
my E500 did the same, battery died due to Subwoofers and Amp system. Then jump started the car and got the same error messeges plus my FAN went on kinda loud as I turend on the car. Not sure if that was normal. Now I just ordered the 2 dry cell Stinger Batteries. We will see if this solves the electrical issues.
You should never jump start these cars, you may have damaged one of the SAM modules or the regulator unfortunately. Fingers crossed for you!

Disconnecting of main battery is it not problem for Computers and control system?
Not for this car no. The only thing at all that needs resetting on the W211 when you disconnect the main battery is the time on the clock in Comand. This is how cars should be. I've seen if you disconnect the battery on many other modern cars it requires several items to be reset, such as ABS, Steering angle sensor, TCS etc
on the SL the boot battery runs everything and SBC the engine battery is for starting. is the Eclass different?
Yes, in the E-class the front (SBC) battery is only as a backup to protect the brake system if the main battery fails

quick question, i have an 04 E320 rwd V6, doing the same exact thing, so i will do this. But also it is not shifting gears, i can put it in gear but it feels like its in 2 gear an it wont shift.

Did you manage to fix his issue? Im going through the same thing at the moment. I think it has something to do with the BCM.
I have replaced my small battery, but I checked using the 12.6 volt meter but it still doesn't charge, please troubleshoot what do you think, thanks

why do you have to remove the negative of main battery in booth before you remove the SBC battery?
I think the computer module must never be left without power supply, since the backup battery will be removed.
Charging the battery won't fix the problem permanently, you need to figure out why it went flat. The wiring from the battery control module to the auxiliary battery charge relay is the most common cause. It usually breaks in the engine compartment underneath the washer bottle filler neck, on right hand drive cars at least...
It seems to be working fine still. I assume it's just died of old age in this case

how are you "activating SBC Hold"? you shift into drive, and then you press something. are you pressing the reset button to the left of the dashboard?

Both my batteries are dead so i cant open the rear trunk on my e200 w211. If i charge the auxiliary battery will it give enough power to at least open the trunk or start the car? Also can i recharge a fully dead aux battery? Thanks for any help
Nope the aux battery is only for the brake system unfortunately. You can just open your trunk with the key though. Have a look under the lip
There's a few ways to charge your battery from hood
It's not a backup battery for SBC brake system. An auxiliary battery supplies electrical energy for a limited time if the systems battery voltage is low. "Small" battery (G1/17) provides supplemental power if systems battery (G1) voltage is low.

Do you really need to charge a new battery with fresh electrolyte? I thought the whole chemistry thing took care of that?
Sadly I forgot to take a voltage measurement after I filled the battery, but after 4 hours on the charger it was only partially charged, so I guess you do need to charge them
