Thanks for the video I just wanted to let everybody know I have a '06 Kia Spectra and it indeed was a cracked solder joint I just bought the refurbished valve body which comes with a wiring harness and the solenoid pack already on it cuz it was easier this did indeed fix my problem which was getting a rough shift from second to third and getting stuck in third gear and being in limp mode It pop up all kinds of transmission codes like solenoid c transmission speed control etc I replace the in and out transmission speed control sensors did a transmission filter and fluid change none of that fixed it this is what fixed it I had a crack solder joint on the wiring harness thanks again for this video
i just did this on my son's 2010 Soul, and although I couldn't see any failed solder joints, it hasn't given trouble since. I watched a few videos where the top connector got broken trying to remove it from the case, so I just reached up into the case and did my best to resolder the connections with the connector still clipped into the case (and into the engine bay harness). Seemed to work ok. Mine had a dark grey rubberized material covering one of the rows of pins. With a little bit of heat and persuasion I was able to carefully scrape it away to allow for soldering. The solder reflowed much easier after I wiped a bit of solder flux paste over the joints. Suggestion to those trying this: take pictures of everything as you take it apart, and don't let hot solder fall back onto your face/eyes. I had a bit of trial and error to get the little protective cover back onto the back of the top connector. Also be careful prying the backs off of the two flat connectors as it's easy to stab yourself with a tiny screwdriver. How do you think I know? Oh, and I used Permatex "Right Stuff" 90 minute gasket maker to seal the pan. This allowed me to put the car back into service in only a few hours after closing everything up. Thanks Xterra Rob for your great video!
Great insight! I come because my wife's friend (single, older, broke) has an 05 Sedona. She had the power steering pump changed. The mechanic noticed a mouse ate through the insulation of "some wires" and replaced the section of bad wire. Now, you guessed it, the transmission slams into 2nd then enters 1 gear only limp mode. She described her issues but didn't mention that it was just worked on. She mentioned that her tach stopped working so (before I knew the back story) I went to change the ignition failure sensor hoping for a long shot fix thinking that might be causing the transmission issues. That's when i noticed all the wiring to the transmission was "new". So my question is: How the world can I diagnose the wiring without a wiring diagram? The mechanic is playing dumb to the repair now claiming her transmission went bad right after the repair. (Well... Not playing) He actually spliced wires and ran new ones so the plug has 1 new connectors inside the housing ran with 6 inches of new wire connected to a blob of the original wiring harness. So it's all plugged in the correct ports but I don't know if he mixed up the pins.
That sounds like a nightmare. You would need a wiring diagram and connector pin out. Go pin by pin wire by wire to check all of his work. Probably worth it to see if you can find a Kia service manual. That is terrible. Good luck.
@@XterraRob I appreciate that. I'll try to hunt one down. I may go to a junk yard just to look at the pin out... I really don't have it in me to change a while wiring harness. I'm not that nice! LoL
FYI: Proper bolt torque for the pan is crucial for any pan. Check your service manuals for proper torque spec and use a torque wrench. A guess would be probably near 8 ftlbs (check your manual) and be sure to use a proper tightening sequence. The tool he used probably torqued the bolts to 20-40 ftlbs. That is why the gasket split. You can also deform the pan and/or pan bolt holes by over torqueing, which will cause leaks.
Fair point...i did use a torque wrench though. Air ratchet I used to just remove bolts faster after carefully breaking them loose. No issues with "The Right Stuff" by Permatex though. Who knows...
@@XterraRob looking again it does seem you are speaking of loosing the pan bolts but just prior to that you had just put the valve body in which would indicate the pan was already off and we would naturally assume u were putting the pan on next. Good to know that "The right stuff" did the job. I hear it will seal most anything but I generally avoid any sealants unless specified for the applications. If dealing with a damaged surface I'd certainly consider it. Some good info in this video that I certainly would use should the need arise. Thanks for the post.
@@paulkaz2127 looking at the video again...it was a weird edit. That was me removing the oil pan thr 2nd time due to the failed gasket. I should have put a title transition or something to explain. The original pan had sealant and no gasket. I took the short cut of using the after market gasket. RTV isnt too difficult so I have learned my lesson.
I have a 2008 Kia Spectra as well. Where is the transmission shift solenoid b located? Is it inside the oil pan, or is it INSIDE the transmission itself? Currently consulting several mechanics and they're giving different answers and hours needed to fix it. I just want to replace the shift solenoid. Thanks.
I am not an expert on all the different solenoids...but the valve body is in the oil pan and has a bunch of different solenoids on it. I assume the one you are looking for is on that valve body. Remove oil pan, remove a couple nuts and bolts and carefully lower the valve body down. I never had to get into the transmission itself as far as gears and shafts etc.
It is probably this wire harness. That is my guess. The solenoids are all powered by this same wire harness. Check out the video I referenced ... I think by Pro Projects was the channel name.

I have the exact same 08 spectra same color. I’ve just changed the solenoids out, the four big piston Springs are in place but my problem is there are 2 smaller(in diameter) springs and I don’t know where the go. Please help. I didn’t see those springs in your video.
sir, what are the colors order of the piston springs? I lost their order. Also, the yellow cub containers has numbers on the bottom from inside, do you know which container cub goes to which piston spring?
I have 2008 Kia spectra these are my codes can you tell me what the last one means also it won’t start but has a brand new battery but has been sitting for awhile as well P0700 P0711 P0711 pd
P0711 PD means the code is pending. Essentially the same as P0711. Some codes throw a preliminary code (pending) but wont trigger the light until a certain amount of miles or run time is acheived. For all intents and purposes its one code to fix. Sounds like your wire harness. When you try to start, what does it do? Nothing? Or engine turns over slow? Or turns over normal, and engine just cant quite run on its own?
I have a 08 Kia Spectra5 that has been going into limp mode and getting stuck in third gear. I took it to a transmission shop to get it assessed, and he brought up the P0743 error that my obdII wasn't picking up. Whats the chance that replacing the wire harness will fix my problems if that is the only error I am getting, aside from the generic P0700 error?
Good eye. Weird that there wasn't oil residue at it but it looks pretty gnarly for sure. After the fix and rtv sealant I had no leaks. Not sure but I sold the car a few years ago.
Probably the same root cause. Each of those balls of solder is a connection that can fail. The code just comes down to which one of the balls of solder cracks first.
My guess is the wire harness failed that controls the solenoids that control the transmission fluid flow. Other than watching this video and one by Pro Projects that I referenced in my video, do some google searching and look on kia-forums

Should I check the wire harness and should I just go to the junk yard or go online
