nice review with both pieces being great products... I have a smaller #4 Field and I love it, but my #8 Lancaster just looks & has way more of a vintage feel to it, and that's a big plus for what I like in a cast iron skillet. I will be ordering the Lancaster #10 as soon as its available!
Great video! We have both! I love the Lancaster because of the pore spouts! Reminds more of vintage than any other. Love the heat ring also! Bought the Lancaster for my wife since she was fearful of using the vintage ones. When I gave it to her her first response was that she could not use it because it was too beautiful to use ugh! So i bought her a Field and she is using it. But I am happy to say that she is now using the vintage. As soon as her number 6 shows up she will have the complete set of Field skillets. She also has witch she says are are favorite, a Lancaster 8 and 10 but won't use them! As soon as they come out with a 12 witch I hope they do, she will have that also! The Stargazers are also awesome. She's using the vintage and Fields. She likes the lighter skillets! So if that helps anyone looking to get one for their wives! If they don't mind using a beautiful skillet then I would recommend the Lancaster! I personally still use Lodge (witch she does ever once in a while) our vintage Griswold, Wagner, Wapak, BS&R and the Stargazers. Again keep up the great work!
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and insights of your cast iron collection. I am honestly enjoying all the options available with modern cast iron cookware. Also vintage is amazing and I see the reason why people fall in love with vintage cast iron cookware.
Good information I enjoy my Lancaster pan and truthfully it was down between these two brands for what I was going to purchase for a lighter unit most of my cast-iron is vintage in my 1930s number eight lodge is about a similar weight But does hold heat much better when you turn off the stove or pull it off the grill for sure. I’ve loved and enjoyed using my Lancaster and it’s quickly becoming My go to pan. Thank
I enjoy rewatching this video. My hope is to get the Lancaster #8 for myself, and their #4 for my 6 year old son ! He already has a couple of nice pieces from Lodge, but I believe Lancaster's #4 would end up being one of the highlights of his little collection.
Good informative video! I'm new to cast iron and wondering why would you pay $170ish for a skillet when Lodge is $20-30? In your video you mention logde cooking very well and good quality so I'm just confused at the difference then. I understand the more expensive are smoother inside but again is that it and is that really important?
easy choice here, lancaster is less than 2 hours from me and theres a few other places i could stand to visit while im there...gonna stop by the storefront soon
Both are great for many applications and each has their unique features. The Lancaster is the lightest of the modern cast iron, but the Stargazer has more features as a modern skillet. Lancaster’s design is more of a tribute to vintage iron versus Stargazers modern take. Stargazer has a cooling design on the handle, bigger helper handle, a special design in the wall and cooking surface to allow spoons a better angle for basting. Along with the design of the flared lip compared to a traditional pour spout. But both are extremely well made skillets.
I live near Allentown. One of the reasons that I bought a Stargazer. I love the look of the Lancaster and it is semi local too. That price though...ouch. I bet that I will eventually pick one up.
The No. 8 I’ve had for a year now so many meals have been cooked on this skillet. The new No. 10 is newer and the best way to develop seasoning in my experience is searing steaks 🥩
@@luisj.castironcooking what would you say has the highest reactivity (i.e. heats/cools quickest)? A Lancaster cast iron, the Smithey deep farmhouse carbon steel skillet or the Vermicular frying pan?
Vermicular is the most reactive it’s very responsive and a huge plus is that it is enameled! Not to say I don’t love Lancaster or Smithey. They are a bit thicker, including the Smithey Farmhouse line. Out of the bunch vermicular is definitely the lightest.
@@luisj.castironcooking The Lancaster site says that the #8 weighs 4.5lbs but yours weighs like 4lbs. Any insight into that difference? Maybe earlier production runs were lighter than current ones? Weight is one of the biggest factors in my decision btwn the two. Thanks!
@@luisj.castironcooking I ordered it on Amazon and went through them. I did how ever have to pay for my own shipping out as they only had the ups option and I have no other way to send it out other than usps

I would not pay 200.00 for a Lancaster pan. I would buy a nice vintage pan first for less money. That is too much money for cast iron. Field Co sells for 145.00 plus 15.00 shipping.
I believe Field Company might have raised their prices. Mostly because of the pandemic. I know Lancaster raised their prices because they are a smaller company which was affected a bit more.
Sorry, I am the biggest Lodge man. Your pans look nice, but I can't see the price. I can get a 12-in pan and lid for less than the price of one of those pans. I can get a huge Dutch oven enameled for way less than the price of other more expensive pans and they work wonderful. I could never pay the prices if they ask for those pans.... I will stick with my Lodge....
I love Lodge as well and they are hard to beat. The modern “elite” pans/skillets are a great option for those that want a hand poured, hand seasoned and USA made cast iron product. These companies are bringing back the older method of how cast iron cookware was made. Also as I mentioned Lodge is hard to beat, they produce great products at a great price. Thanks
I have been using Lodge for years and always appreciated them until the last few years. They are so heavy and are really hard on my wrist and hand. I'm getting older and looking for a lighter weight skillet.
Field pan even the leather handle speaks volume. Look at the attention to detail whereas Lancaster is just a knock off and well, the leather handle is not very well made. Lancaster is surely thinner at the bottom and therefore more prone to cracks if it met an accident. They imitated the Field’s circular vinyl records like surface. The handle of a Lancaster is so 1800s. Field for me is number 1 best because it is a modern take on an old design.

If you could only have one of them, which one would it be?
Thank you
Funny that such a small thing is important to me. Yes,
I’m talking about the pour spouts. Cheers!
Great review, the Lancaster is beautiful!
Thanks and I do like the Lancaster because of it minimalist design that is reminiscent of vintage Cast Iron.
Excellent video, thanks for providing the great content.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I always look at lancaster as my “race skillet” when i need to cook quick.
Great video, Luis Lancaster still hasn't produced a lid, its too bad that actually swayed my decision.

Lancaster is my favorite & I really enjoyed seeing the close comparison with Field. Have you tried any Austin Foundry cast iron?
Austin foundry would be a great review to view! !!!!!
I have seen the Austin foundry skillets but I have not tried them out. Perhaps down the road I’ll do a review on them
@@luisj.castironcooking please do!! I think they are made somewhere in Wisconsin!
What a good review. I've been thinking about getting a Lancaster #10 until i seen the Stargazer #12, so now i don't know which to get. lol

Stargazer is almost half the cost of Lancaster. And the offer 10% off your first order. Also heard they give 15% off military
Last summer I went to Lancaster store grand opening in Conastoga Pa. All there products are very pricey.

I am such a lodge super fanboy! !!!!!! Love lodge!
To rough and way to heavy!
I thought field was made somewhere in Wisconsin too!?!
I think it is made in two areas so you might be correct
Nice black patina! How long did it take to get that color? Mine is still the bronze/brown color.

Please review the IKEA cast iron skillet! 😊
Noted!
Let me have the Lancaster skillet. I promise you’ll be happy.
I feel like if there was any reason to get a lighter cast iron skillet, I would just go out and get carbon steel instead. Is there any reason not to?
Carbon steel is a very good alternative since both are basically the same

Out of the two which has a smoother finish
Lancaster is smoother, very slightly lighter, deeper and bigger in volume. Both are beautiful pans but they do differ in form and shape
My kick off grill came in just in time for you video, but wait there’s more! There is a crack running all the way down the side of the grill
