+MrGlanderson Seriously it's like every DJ is the same. They only play house and get all their songs from Beatport. I like EDM too but I play a wide variety of genres alongside it.
+Random my main audience is R&B and hip hop. but since I began to DJ I have found an appreciation for other types of music including EDM. I listen to dubstep and other styles of music that I don't even know the names of. sometimes I just hear a certain sound and I like it. when I get a chance to play for a mixed crowd I play a little bit of everything.
+MrGlanderson I also play some house music, dancehall, Jersey club. there are so many styles of music out today. it's easier to find a style of music then audience that wants to hear that style music.
Wanted to comment to help others - before I start ...I've been mixing since I was 14, was taught by my old man (former club DJ, DMC member who taught me on some SL-1200s/vinyl. I'm 24 now, still love vinyl I think it's the best way and most original / old school way to learn how to be a DJ. My advice (like anything really) is practice and more practice. I used to prActice everyday after school, at least 2 hours because felt like 10 minutes it's that fun when you get the hang of mixing! Learn to beat match ...get two copies of the same record (or MP3s/whatever for CDJs) and play one of them and mix the other in slowly keep speed at ( +\- 0 ) on both decks. To work out the record's speed - count the beat for 15 seconds then multiply by 4 -Eg 32 beats x4 = 128 beats per minute (BPM)so house tracks will Typically have 32 beats every 15s. ! Beats are usually 4 beats to a bar. read up on how DJs used to mix in the 80s, don't copy David Guetta - look at real DJs like Paul Oakenfold.
Amen to this dude. When he was talking about the crowd not listening to the mix that is what I notice a lot when I' m free styling and the crowd doesn't care.
You nailed it homie!! I have friends who are stuck in beat matching everything. There are many ways to mix and blend one song to the next but I enjoy a drop every now and then. BALANCE!
You hit the nail right on the head with this, I can't switch off when I'm out and hear the next tune coming in way before most and notice that exact same thing where people get more of a kick out of just hearing the full on intro. Even with this in mind it's like an addiction to 'see if I can' just mix everything though like you said transitions like a brake pause or slipping it back on vinyl mode to just drop in the next tune keeps things interesting. love the vids!
DjTLM.....you're for real. You aren't fake or a phony. You're what's up. You're videos are dope and im definitely gonna subscribe. Im just starting to dj and you've been a BIG help! Thanks and continue to do what you do
Throwing it in on the 1 - Yes for HipHop - No for dance music - I will always use the intro to blend it in smooth, but then some mixes will get switched into straight when they drop and the crowd hears the hype part, So slightly different for Drum & Bass and such - But the theory of when u switch into the main hype part, stands - Thats how u get the biggest reaction.
Awesome advice! I totally agree! When playing at the high point of the night it can be much more effective to just have the right song drop on the one! It actually amplifies the crowds momentum rather than just keep it steady. I love your videos, keep it up!
You at 100% right. Anyone not a DJ has no idea when the song is mixed or introduced. If you are you can totally catch it. But that also goes for the offbeats or errors, they can’t tell when there’s a mistake, but as a dj u can totally catch them. 🤷♂️
Great advice djTLM. I've been djing over 30 years and I've always done exactly what you said in this video. I love to mix but like you said it can be missed by the audience. A cut or a slam really gets the crowd going. Love your videos bro!!!
Old video but gotta comment. One of the best EDM DJs I have ever seen would rarely mix. He knew every beat of every song he had and knew what tracks would just flow into the next song. Most had no clue he was not mixing...... Knowing your tunes and how to construct a set is way more important.
I like how you keep it simple by not over explaining. I TOTALLY agree with your take on this video… I finally someone that feels like I do… Keep up the good work.
so glad I found you on. yourube. I've been djayjng now for maybe 2yrs. but I toyed with it back in the mid 80s with techniques and Geminis. now I have a ddj sx. really appreciate your knowledge and expertise and willingness to share it with us. keep up the outstanding job
Man, i dont know if it was meant to be bro, but i was getting frustrated with mixing some tracks, i put on youtube and BOOM this clip comes up and answers everything! Love your videos bro, awesome advice everytime
It's so simple, and now that you say that I remember all the times the same thing has happened to me while out on the dance floor. I just never thought about using it myself because I've been so dead set on mixing all or at least most of the time. Thanks again for the tips man, these videos have helped a fuck ton.
Love this video. I was Djing a wedding and one of the brides maids asked me is it possible I could stop mixing or blending songs so she can hear the whole song from beginning to end "Thank You" then walked away.It was on this day I stopped mixing songs at weddings and let the whole song play through. The only time I mix songs is when one of the guest asks me to play house music then I mix.
Watched 3 of your videos today and its really comforting and encouraging as against the effect of popular DJ cliches. They've been really helpful. Thank you
Thank you for all your great tutorials! I have been learning from you for about a year now. These are the best and most comprehensive tutorials I have found. Even the videos you just talk are wonderful. Thanks for your transparency. Your work is a great blessing to me and many others. Simply, thank you!
Great tip. I have used this technique for years now and it always works great! It's all about your song selection! Always love dropping Nelly- Hot in Here in a similar way
So true mate, so true. Beat matching and seamless boring sets (now it's so easy) here in the UK has contributed to the death of the club scene where once it was maybe the best in the world. Back when the whole acid house/Balearic scene began DJs would go from a 120 bpm house tune to maybe a 105 bpm Balearic monster simply by the old turn the power dial on the 1210 off, a second pause then the intro. It made clubbing exciting as it was about the tunes. I now play hip-hop, funky soul etc on vinyl and beatmatching most tracks is either impossible or totally pointless. It's all about using the intro like you say, maybe using the old spin back trick, using a forward scratch to bring a track in or most of the time just cutting the track in.
SMH saw this video 8years too late smgdh 😂!!! But I got it now. Nailed it, what helped me was I went to live shows years after DJ and saw people loosing there MIND literally. I never understood what I was doing wrong. Well I was blending in every song. Without realizing I was killing the intro!
Thank you so much for this video ..Im just staring out in the DJ world ..I love playing intro ..and at the end of a song just smooth the next song in!! Im learning a litle mixxing but no hurry!!
Man, I really wish you started these videos when I was starting out years ago... this is the best advice ever, and I had to learn it the hard way... while actually playing out. Thanks man... even if it isn't new info to me, hearing your take on things is always nice and this video is 100% true great advice.
It's the ULTIMATE compliment when a crowd can't detect your transition, usually until vocals come in or they just have good music knowledge!!! :-) TLM is correct, there is a time and place for everything.
I agree 100%!! When I'm DJing, I don't really beat match that much during the peak part of the night during my gig. It's a lot of drop ins one the 1... Or I scratch the song in on the 1. Great video!!!
awesome advice, it is so easy to get into the mindset that every single song has to be missed. there are so many other creative ways to bring in the next track. keep up the great work TLM
Excellent advice! Really good info, this is also about putting the interests of the crowd over strutting your skills as a DJ, even though that "Cut the hook imeadienty drop the instantly recognizable riff" transition is brilliant. Great stuff!
Hey Buds this is very helpful. I have been spinning house for 20 plus years and got asked to play two weddings this year and both weddings want R&B and Hip Hop. I do love all genres and am excited to play these as I have never really done this. But... it's completely different and I appreciate the tip.
@3:39 i've noticed that too. when i'm a regular party goer. the crowd DOES NOT know whats coming in so true... i catch what's coming in and tell my friends. they're usually surprised i knew what was coming
Great advice djTLM!!! I noticed this as well with a latin bar I work at. When you mix certain latin genres, it sounds great with a good flow. But with certain genres like salsa or mexican music like corridos or banda, the latin crowds know and want to hear the whole track play through. I could easily mix them but it throws the crowd off when doing so. To keep them hyped up, I just filter/fade tracks in/out with a few effects here and there and it works like a charm ;)
Appreciate ya..you definitely confirmed everything. I have a bad habbit of strictly blending. I love to flip the tracks but I find myself caught up in it too much. Thanks!
djTLM, Thanks for making this video, because im that guy who tries to mix everything. just got back into djing after 20 yrs (devoted myself to video & photography, so if you need any help let me know) and im relearning all over again, your vids are helping alot..
I struggle with this . . .just learning. I like the constant flow/endless song concept of mixing; but, it definitely does seem like sometimes you have to just drop it. Lol. I don't know. I'll keep practicing and then once I am no longer a bedroom DJ, I'll play with it live.
Paying the bills as a wedding DJ I get this .. so much that I gave up :( However I now DJ by myself to grow and relax . Know your place !one day you will stand in front of your peers with your knowledge and skill and only then what you can do will matter :)
Great videos, great advices. The crowd responds better not to the routine mixes, but the (good) unexpected and (good) originals things the DJ do. Keep cool djTLM
True, thanks! Im in the midst of tying my mix together, but its sounding a lil same?. I was thinking of just something out there..Your example got me thinking, yeah! im gon do that!..Thanks!
Great Advice And Video as always...As A DJ i agree you don't have to always mix or beat juggle each song....It sounds more Hype And Dope if u snap in another track with the same tempo..And play with the Intro a bit or add bit of secondary sound effects..
thank you, this answers so many questions i had from months back. i finally left the base i was at and I'm in japan now. i sold my sx and got a ns7-2....im looking forward to getting back into it....looking forward to more of your advice videos as well
Great Info DJ TLM., I like the example you gave for using intro's of tracks and not mixing everything. (P.S.: Fat Joe- "Lean Back" Remix with Mase, Eminem & Remy Ma is my Sh*t! i agree with listening other djs play, i do the same. i was at a wedding this weekend and the dj was randomly scratching. was annoying as hell. i felt like getting up there and playing. but yes i do listen to oher djs
The normal Saturday Sessions video's are Q&A scratch video's. In those video's I scratch over a beat, but I leave parts empty so you can scratch over those parts while you watch the video. The Saturday Super Sessions are compilation video's. For those video's I let everyone make their own scratch video (using the same beat) and I edit it into 1 video. Part 1 is online and I'm working on the edit for part 2 right now
Wow, mixing everything. I used to be guilty of that a-lot. Nowdays as a mobile mainly doing private events its more about the right song at the right time. If a song ends cold, Slam the next track. If not, simple quick crossfade with the crossfader set to a long throw and don't worry about beat matching just as long as its Quick (within only four beats) and doesn't sound like a real trainwreck. My bad habit back in my residency days was that I would start each hour set at 90 to 98 BPM and then beatmatch up through the hour all the way to 145 BPM. After a few songs at 145 I would pick something at 98 BPM and turn off the motor on the platter. As inertia wound down I would bring in the 90 to 98 BPM track when my platter had almost stopped and start a new hour set. Now,,, it did help me rotate my dance floor but looking back on it it did kinda make me predictable as a DJ. I did always like the roller coaster effect to my style of spinning back then and had and always reveled whenever I found tools to help me do it. I would always start a set at no lower than 110 BPM and go up. One of the remix services I used would often release two versions of the same song and they were almost always a down tempo version and an up tempo version and the way they cut the vinyl it would be a great transition between the two versions always going up (sometimes as much as 20 BPM). The other tool they gave me was 10 to 15 minute long medley mix mashups. Each mix would cover a single artist, a single decade, a genre, or just one year. examples would be... The Sound of the 70's The 1993 Flashback Medley (these usually came out each Feb. for previous year) I Love Rock and Roll (The Medley) The Prince Medley Each of these medleys started at low BPMs and rose. They usually had two to four breakbeat sections that were easy to mix into or out of so I could use them for quick 15 to 20 BPM jumps within 5 minutes if I needed to get up there in a hurry to play a request. Usually in my normal beatmatching I would not mix more than 5 to 10 BPM at a time.
You are right, it's taking too long! It's my mistake for doing too many different tutorial series at the same time. You will get the next part of the series next week. Stay tuned!
I am so glad to get advice from a DJ that plays what I play. Im so tired of hearing tips from EDM DJ's that dont apply to me.
+MrGlanderson Seriously it's like every DJ is the same. They only play house and get all their songs from Beatport. I like EDM too but I play a wide variety of genres alongside it.

BIG UP from Italy. So much truth. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for sharing and taking the time to explain. Awesome information.
@3:39 i've noticed that too. when i'm a regular party goer. the crowd DOES NOT know whats coming in
so true... i catch what's coming in and tell my friends. they're usually surprised i knew what was coming
You give me confidence TLM. I appreciate it.
Have you thought of doing a gig log? I feel it would be helpful.
Yes! Yes!
A gig log from you would be very welcome.
Excellent advice, man!
Appreciate ya..you definitely confirmed everything. I have a bad habbit of strictly blending. I love to flip the tracks but I find myself caught up in it too much. Thanks!
You are great DJ and a great teacher! Tks man!
djTLM, Thanks for making this video, because im that guy who tries to mix everything. just got back into djing after 20 yrs (devoted myself to video & photography, so if you need any help let me know) and im relearning all over again, your vids are helping alot..
I struggle with this . . .just learning. I like the constant flow/endless song concept of mixing; but, it definitely does seem like sometimes you have to just drop it. Lol. I don't know. I'll keep practicing and then once I am no longer a bedroom DJ, I'll play with it live.

The NS7-2 video is rendering now so I will upload it tomorrow morning. It's a beast!!
djTLMtv Hi TLM.
Just a suggestion for a next video...
How about a small NS7 II vs Pioneer DDJ-SZ ?
It will be good to see this video.
How about the crossfader, is it sharp? better them Pioneer DDJ-SZ?

The crossfader feels a bit sharper than the SZ, but in both cases I wasn't really impressed. For the best results it could be that an innofader would work better

i agree with listening other djs play, i do the same. i was at a wedding this weekend and the dj was randomly scratching. was annoying as hell. i felt like getting up there and playing. but yes i do listen to oher djs
Any tips for mixing Trap ?
Thanks for the advice...keep the knowledge coming. I heard you in this and another video talk about a Sat session what's that?
The normal Saturday Sessions video's are Q&A scratch video's. In those video's I scratch over a beat, but I leave parts empty so you can scratch over those parts while you watch the video.
The Saturday Super Sessions are compilation video's. For those video's I let everyone make their own scratch video (using the same beat) and I edit it into 1 video. Part 1 is online and I'm working on the edit for part 2 right now
Thank you this tip is really helpful.
The Sound of the 70's
The 1993 Flashback Medley (these usually came out each Feb. for previous year)
I Love Rock and Roll (The Medley)
The Prince Medley
Each of these medleys started at low BPMs and rose.
